It is helpful for all of us to develop the skills that enable us to step back from emotion-laden life events (both good and bad) in order to gain perspective and insight. This allows us to interact optimally with those in our lives who can significantly impact our well-being. Therapy provides a safe, nonjudgmental environment that promotes self-exploration and the development of insight into our own behaviors as well as the behaviors of others. Identifying the potential "whys" behind our actions and reactions can be empowering in the context of personal change and development.
As an intern, I was fortunate to work with diverse clients that continue to help me develop professionally such as preschool children with behavioral difficulties, high school students struggling with problems such as non-suicidal self harm (cutting), depression, grief/loss, and trauma due to abuse/neglect, and victims of violent crimes through Cal/VCP.
History is not destiny however; identification and processing of past events that have become emotional triggers affecting our current emotional state can help to put us back in control and on the path to overall health and well-being.
