Having a child or adolescent who is struggling can be overwhelming not just for the child, but also for the entire family.
I work with children (5+) and teenagers who are experiencing difficulties with hyperactivity (e.g. attention, lack of focus, school problems), impulsivity, oppositional defiance, anxiety, as well as adjustment issues such as divorce, change in school or family dynamics. As a licensed professional counselor and licensed behavioral specialist, I am highly trained to address these, and similar issues.

My clients are children and teens experiencing difficulty with creating change on their own. I am a Certified Clinical Child & Adolescent Anxiety Treatment Professional. My primary specialty is anxiety and low self-esteem in children and teens. Treating anxiety has always been an interest of mine. There are many individuals dealing with anxiety, so I felt that it was important to understand it well. Anxiety impacts each person differently, and I have spent much time learning how to lessen symptoms and increase coping strategies for my clients.

Life is filled with times of transition and times of change. This couldn't be more true than for the life of a child or an adolescent . School stressors, personal identity, family separations, forming healthy friendships, and an overwhelming desire for acceptance are all things that a child or adolescent may deal with regularly. In these moments it is crucial for a young person to feel understood and listened to in order to be helped. Coming alongside a young person in whatever place they may be residing in is where my heart resides. Many times this age group can be overlooked or misunderstood, but their needs still remain.

I specialize in working with adolescents and adults who are struggling with all forms of eating disorders and disordered eating. Clients who come to see me may have just been diagnosed with an eating disorder or have been struggling for years. Some clients aren't sure if they have an eating disorder, but know they are struggling with food and their body. Clients often reach out to me because they know that I practice from a Health at Every Size(R) framework and they want treatment that is not stigmatizing about weight. Adolescent clients and their families often seek me out because of my expertise doing Family Based Treatment.

If you’re worried about your little one, your teen is in trouble, or you notice that “family feeling” of mutual support and thriving is missing, reach out--we can tailor a successful approach to the specific situation you face.
Every story is unique. My job in session is to listen well and frame a space that invites you to speak freely. I work exclusively through telehealth, and my areas of expertise are in helping people who are grappling with overwhelming emotions, dissociative defenses, or the aftermath of painful experiences to get to a place that's more livable. Integrating the tools of old school psychotherapy with affective neurobiology, relational theories of change, and a horizontal treatment approach, I help you get to the root of the problem as we work in the moment towards equilibrium and a sense of connectedness to yourself and others.

I work with emerging adults and adolescents trying to find their place in this world. If you or your child are struggling with self-esteem, life transitions, anxiety, phobias, PTSD, OCD, or other stress disorders, I can help! I practice with a holistic view of therapy - using the mind, body, and soul as part of the therapeutic process. Specifically, I bring solution-focused goals to therapy for behavioral changes that are not beneficial to long-term well-being.

Every individual is different, It is not easy to function with debilitating depression, anxiety or any behavioral health diagnosis. Just as one needs help and support with a medical diagnosis, we all need support with behavioral health diagnoses. I am here to offer support in a therapeutic, positive and holistic environment. To meet you where you are. To provide a judgement free zone. I use CBT techniques along with other interventions and tools that I have mastered over the years to meet the person where they are. Often taking the first step is the hardest part, but know that you are stronger just by being here and seeking help.

Teen Therapists

What does therapy for teenagers look like?

When a therapist works with a teenager, the pair will talk about what the teen is struggling with and explore solutions, which may involve interpersonal skills, coping strategies, medication, or lifestyle changes related to sleep, diet, and exercise. Different therapists employ different modalities, but most involve a combination of conversation and skill building.

How long does therapy for teenagers generally take to work?

There’s variability in teenagers’ experiences and challenges; some may begin to improve from therapy within a few weeks while others may take several months or longer. Teens can discuss their progress with their therapist periodically to assess how they’re improving and any changes to the treatment plan that could potentially accelerate that progress.

How do you encourage a teenager to go to therapy?

It’s helpful to express your concern and love while framing therapy as an opportunity to explore a tool that could help improve their life; just like they practice baseball or dance, now they can practice their emotional skills. Give your teen control over the process where you can—maybe by weighing in on choice of therapist and signaling that therapy involves confidentiality, so a parent need not know all that is discussed in sessions.

How do you prepare teens for therapy?

You can prepare your teenager for therapy by describing what the process will look like and setting expectations for timeline, if requested. You can explain that the first session may begin with an assessment phase, that they can describe their experiences but that the therapist will ask questions too, and that it may take time to feel comfortable opening up. Ask how they’re feeling about the process and answer any questions calmly and supportively.
