My clients come to therapy feeling anxious, overwhelmed or burned-out. Maybe you are struggling with feeling anxious about performance at work, setting boundaries with family members, tension in a relationship, or managing the challenges of parenthood. You wish you had a judgement-free space to feed supported as you process why you feel stuck and how to move forward. If so, you're in the right place.

My specializations include couples work, women's life transitions, infertility, perinatal mood & anxiety disorders, maternal well-being, intermarriage and parenting.
Couples come to therapy often feeling frustrated, defensive, hurt and angry. Love, attraction and shared life goals may have brought them together, but along the way to deeper emotional intimacy couples meet roadblocks. Growing self-awareness and curiosity about their partner helps them appreciate their differences as enriching rather than threatening. Partners realize that each of them has a role in cultivating the quality of their relationship. Partners learn to support each other's growth and expand their horizons together. Their relationship feels more alive and hopeful. Therapy nurtures the art of relationships for all of us.

I also work with people experiencing pregnancy & postpartum issues.
In a world that can feel increasingly polarized, our conversations make a difference in how we go on together. Every interaction shapes the possibility for bringing us closer together or pushing us further apart. As we feel more understood, respected, and capable, we can turn towards one another with more compassion and capacity for connection. Whether you're seeking therapy for relationships, grief, sex, or life transitions, I'm here to support you at your own pace.

Pregnancy and Postpartum Depression, Anxiety, OCD, and Birth Trauma.
Women have specific concerns and needs that can seem to change rapidly, such as mood and body image concerns during monthly cycles. Later on, Trying to Conceive (TTC), or the many emotions that come with Pregnancy, as well as Pregnancy losses and terminations, can be quite challenging and leave you feeling unsure who you can open up to without judgment and unsolicited advice. Birth Trauma, Postpartum Depression, and Anxiety can also feel quite scary and talking to a knowledgeable Therapist in Women's Emotional Health can help you feel validated in your thoughts and fears, reduce guilt, and help you see that you are doing your best!

Now I combine my clinical training, my personal experience, and my professional experience, to help my clients through fertility diagnosis/treatment, pregnancy after infertility, when to stop treatment, and adjusting to childfree life.
Fertility issues can be so lonely, whether it's struggling to conceive, having miscarriages, or having to terminate for medical reasons. Everyone around you seems to get (and stay!) pregnant whenever they want, and if one more person tells you to "just relax and it will happen" you may lose it. Thinking about how to get pregnant takes over everything, your entire identity, and you don't even feel like yourself anymore. Focusing at work, seeing friends, and sex for fun feel impossible. And, if you struggled with your mental health before infertility, anxiety and depression are probably off the charts right about now.

I love working with people exploring life transitions, including those happening in early adulthood, career changes, beginning and ending relationships, fertility challenges, pregnancy, post-partum, parenting, and health diagnoses.
I work with individuals and couples by recognizing that each person I work with has a life filled with complex experiences beyond the presenting concern. I look to find understanding and connection through exploration of those varied experience. I help clients set boundaries and develop deeper understanding about their own relationships. As a sex therapist, I believe that sex and intimacy are parts of the human experience, and I know that not everyone is eager to talk about these parts of themselves. I help clients build confidence in being able to talk about these areas.

Pregnancy, Prenatal, Postpartum Therapists

What are the most effective ways to address pregnancy, prenatal, and postpartum concerns?

The most effective way to address pregnancy, prenatal, and postpartum concerns is by finding a therapist who has prior experience helping other patients overcome the challenge being faced. For example, a marriage and family therapist may have experience helping couples adjust to their new relationship dynamic. An anxiety specialist may have experience helping with phobias or illness anxiety related to the child’s health. A depression specialist may have experience treating postpartum depression.

When should I seek treatment for prenatal or postpartum concerns?

Pregnancy and the postpartum period involve intense physical and mental changes; a degree of upset and instability is normal. However, if these changes impair daily functioning, it may be time to seek help. This distinction is pertinent for postpartum depression: A period of teariness, irritability, and distress is difficult but normal in the one to two weeks after childbirth (sometimes called the “baby blues.”) But if feelings of sadness and hopelessness persist beyond that period, the person should seek treatment.

How do I manage worries during pregnancy or the postnatal period?

A therapist can help patients develop the tools they need to manage anxieties during or after pregnancy. Cognitive behavioral therapy can help people identify and reframe harmful patterns of thought, and change their behaviors. Other techniques and skills can allow people to develop acceptance, psychological flexibility, self-compassion, communication skills, and more.

Are there specific medications for postpartum depression?

In 2019, the FDA approved the first medication designed to treat postpartum depression. The medication is called brexanolone and is delivered intravenously by a medical professional over the course of a few days. However, typical antidepressants, which are more accessible, can also treat postpartum depression. The disorder is often best treated through a combination of medication and therapy.
