Taking the first step towards mental health treatment can be daunting. Feelings of uncertainty, fear of confronting past traumas, or anxiety about the unknown often arise. Counseling should be a collaborative process, so my goal is to listen, challenge, support, and empower you as we work towards your mental health goals together. I am committed to creating a safe space where you can explore parts of yourself that may feel traumatized, anxious, or depressed. As a dedicated mental health therapist, I advocate for and encourage radical healing, focusing on the root causes of trauma and systemic oppression while empowering individuals.

I believe that fit between therapist and client is one of the most important factors in counseling. My style is to adapt my approach to the client's personality and needs. Some people want or respond well to a lot of feedback, suggestions, and structured goals, while others need a good listener more than anything else. I strive to put the client first in developing the treatment plan. I have extensive experience in treating a broad range of issues and in psychological assessment. Feel free to call first to discuss your needs if you are not sure that I'm the right therapist for you.

Each of us faces a whole host of challenges in our lives. Whether these are challenges from our past that are still affecting us today or situations that are ongoing. Or maybe we’re having a tough time with life in general, and we’re not sure why that is, where it’s coming from, or even how to begin to process what we’re struggling with.

Living as queer or trans can be difficult, daunting, or downright scary in today's world; the same can be said for folks with Autism, ADHD, or other neurotypes.
I specialize with folks who are queer or neurodivergent, especially those who've been hurt by a society that often ostracizes them. I blend existential and depth psychology perspectives in a neurodiversity-affirming framework, but I also know when to keep it real and focus on the aspects of everyday living.

I love working with Neurodivergent, Queer, and Trans clients, as well as folks living with trauma, especially childhood trauma.
As a NeuroQueer therapist, I get what it's like navigating a world that wasn't built for you. Maybe you're exploring your identity, healing from a childhood that didn't feel safe, or exhausted from masking who you really are. If you've tried therapy before but felt like you had to explain yourself constantly or hide parts of who you are, then you deserve a therapist who shares your lived experience and creates space where ALL of you is welcome. I'm here to walk alongside you as you reconnect with your authentic self—the person who's been there all along, beneath the layers of protection and survival strategies you've had to develop.

I especially work with autistic adults who have experienced trauma and grief (both showing up in a variety of forms, single event, ongoing events, feeling very alone as an adult or child, loss of a loved one, loss of a hoped for relationship, etc).
I am trauma-certified and have worked in the mental health field for over 20 years (In my own practice for 7 years.) While my approach will vary based on your unique needs, overall I collaborate with you and your inner child to learn what you have experienced and facilitate loving reconnection with versions of yourself stuck in those wounding experiences.

Autism Therapists

What is the most effective treatment for autism?

Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) has come to be considered the standard treatment for children with autism spectrum disorder, and research has confirmed its effectiveness for many children. Therapists trained in ABA techniques work with children (and their parents) on developing social skills, communication and learning abilities, and everyday habits of hygiene and grooming. The clinician will tailor their program to the child’s particular need but the overarching goal will be to help them advance as far as possible toward independence based on their level of symptoms and decrease the need for additional special services. Families should seek a mental health professional specifically trained in ABA, and holding special certification in the technique, who has extensive experience not only with the approach but in using it with children with the same level of symptoms as the child who needs care.

How does ABA work?

Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) sessions, which typically focus on positive reinforcement, can be intensive, lasting two or more hours several times a week, and continuing for two years or more. Therapists can also be expected to ask parents to take an active role in reinforcing lessons. Research has found that the technique can lead to major improvements that decrease the need for additional special services.

How does treatment for autism work?

Therapy sessions based on Applied Behavior Analysis will likely be frequent, intensive, and highly structured. After a thorough assessment, a therapist will help a child understand and develop skills in a range of areas, including communication, motor skills, social skills, self-care, play, and academic skills, as well as routines of daily living like hygiene. Typically, the therapist will help a child break down the components of a behavior—often referred to as the antecedent (what prompts an action), the behavior, and the consequence(what immediately follows)—and then reward the child at every step, while also asking parents to reinforce the lessons, and the rewards, throughout the day. This core therapy may be supplemented by occupational or speech therapy, and antidepressants, antipsychotics, and anticonvulsants may be prescribed to address specific severe symptoms.

How long does therapy for autism take?

Some people with autism spectrum disorder may be engaged in some level of therapy for many years, but research shows that treatment will be most effective if it is begun early and delivered intensively. When therapy begins by age 3, children tend to be better able to grasp and adopt the skills needed to manage everyday life, including attending school and establishing social relationships. This type of early-intervention treatment regimen is highly structured, typically involving 20 to 40 hours of one-on-one therapy per week, along with additional hours of engagement managed by parents, for a period of two years or more, although the duration of treatment is dependent on the child’s level of symptoms and pace of progress.
