I believe counseling is hugely powerful because through the
relationship
you are able to gain some awareness about yourself, learn some skills, and implement those skills to live the life that you ultimately want to live.
Hi I am Jack Cottom a licensed professional counselor. I have been practicing psychotherapy for the past 10 years. I am consider myself a carefrontational kind of therapist with a splash of humor. I also love traveling which shapes my experience of the world and people. I specialize in working with men's and young men's issues around depression, anxiety, self esteem, and confidence. Although these are my niche populations I'm open to working with anyone of any gender, race, ethnic background, etc that is motivated to heal.

I see my role in each client's treatment as more of a guide and
partner
.
When people come to me, they're often carrying the weight of their obsessions, worries, burnout, trauma, and stress. Through our work together, my clients feel more unburdened in their lives and in their relationships with others. They learn to let go of their unhelpful narratives and behavior patterns, while they grow a more accepting and compassionate perspective towards themselves. As a woman of color, I am sensitive to the ways that identity and mental health impact each other. I take an action-oriented and direct approach, motivating you to take positive steps both in and outside of the therapy session.

I have a psychotherapeutic orientation, and am also trained in both cognitive-behavioral and mindfulness techniques. I work with the technique and orientation to fit the person--dealing with depression, anxiety, grief and loss.
We all experience change and loss in our lives. Everyone copes in their own way and time. From the ending of a
relationship
, common life transitions (such as school, jobs, moving) to the death of a loved-one, change can sometimes be experienced as profound loss. And depression and/or anxiety can follow. I will help you go through a grieving process that will empower you.

I have over twenty years of experience working with people, 18-elders. I believe that therapy is an adventure, where one chooses to go, regardless of not knowing the way. Through the
relationship
this awareness is brought together by truth, compassion, humor, and some pain. The therapist serves as a guide, modeling and teaching the individual a more effective way of living. I see the individual as someone with a whole life that exists beyond the therapy session. The
relationship
, which fosters hope is a non-judgmental environment, that underlies all the work that is undertaken.

Couples Counseling Therapists
Does couples counseling work?
Research shows that couples counseling is effective; it can reduce relationship distress and improve emotional awareness, communication, empathy, intimacy, and overall relationship satisfaction. For example, emotionally focused therapy was found to be effective for about 75 percent of couples, and those benefits lasted at least two years.
When should a couple seek counseling?
Couples can benefit from counseling if they consistently struggle in their relationship. They may have lost the ability to communicate effectively, become entrenched in harmful patterns, begun to fight more than usual, broken the other’s trust, suffered from a mental or physical illness, or faced any number of other challenges. Many therapists offer free consultations, so if a couple isn’t sure whether therapy is necessary, asking directly can provide clarity.
How can I get my partner to go to couples therapy?
The decision to seek couples therapy is often driven by one partner, who then convinces the other to participate. When discussing the idea, the initiator should be direct and assertive. They can state the problems they see and explain how the relationship would benefit from therapy. In more serious cases, they can also explain how their relationship may suffer without making any changes or seeking professional help.
How does a couple prepare for couples counseling?
The anticipation of beginning couples counseling can be difficult—sometimes more difficult than the first session itself. Taking a few moments to reflect can allay those concerns: What are the current challenges? When and how did they begin? What do they want the relationship to look like in the future? Reflecting on these questions can help individuals or couples articulate their goals. Of course, the therapist will also ask questions and guide couples through the process.
