My approach is primarily cognitive behavioral and I have over thirty years of experience. I work mostly with adults with depression and anxiety disorders. OCD is a special interest, and I use exposure and response prevention. I believe that with patience, a positive outlook and good rapport, much is possible.

“In any given moment, we have two options: to step forward into growth or step back into safety.” My ideal client is tired of “playing it safe” and is open to the newness that change brings. My ideal client is not only searching for a way out of their situation, but they are ready to gain the tools needed to improve their quality of life. Therapy is not about being told what to do, it’s finding a great fit with a skilled clinician who will join you in your journey to wellness. Rather than trying to fix things on your own, why not collaborate with someone who celebrates your individuality and incorporates it in your healing process?

I am a family therapist who works with individuals, couples and families. I focus my practice on helping individuals improve their important relationships - with their children, with their spouses or with a significant other and with their parents. Helping clients with work relationships is also a significant part of my practice. I've facilitated sessions with several generations of married couples within one family. Important relationships influence a person's emotional and physical states, resulting in some cases in extreme distress. When people reduce their sensitivity to others, they can make dramatic improvements in directing their own emotional and physical wellbeing.

I believe that people have the ability to make changes at any time in their lives. I believe a strong, compassionate, therapeutic relationship is essential to promote change and growth. I have specialized training in stepfamily therapy and recognize they have different dynamics than intact families. I work with people who have depression, anxiety disorders, relationship issues, as well as those needing anger management skills. I see couples for marital or couples therapy.

Hi My Name is Vanessa. I am from the greater Philadelphia area. Prior to becoming a clinician, I worked extensively in social work. That work sparked a desire for me to support individuals with developing internal resources, while exercising social supports. I believes that success happens when individuals and families can match the support they receive with healthy lifestyle choices, self-care, and coping skills.

My ideal client is a woman navigating the layered, often overwhelming realities of modern womanhood. She may be a mother, an expectant mother, trying to conceive, postpartum, or balancing career, relationships, and caregiving. She might look like she “has it together” on the outside—but internally feels stretched thin, anxious, emotionally drained, or disconnected from herself. My approach to therapy joins humor and thoughtful reflection, creating a partnership, and holding space for both strength and struggle to help move toward a fuller, more balanced version of yourself.

FAQ - About Therapy for Seniors
Is one ever too old for mental health therapy?
Individuals of all ages can benefit from mental health therapy. Indeed, older adults in particular may benefit from the social and psychological support a therapist can provide; the topics that older adults address in therapy may simply differ from those of younger clients. Seniors should seek out a therapist who has experience working with older individuals and who is well-versed in addressing common concerns among elderly individuals, such as depression, anxiety, loneliness, and physical mobility challenges.

How is counseling for seniors and the elderly different from counseling for other age groups?
In general, counseling offers an opportunity for clients to process difficult life events and develop coping skills they can use outside of the therapy session. Therapists who specialize in working with elderly clients generally have the same framework but may place a special emphasis on specific topics, such as caregiver relationships and reducing loneliness. They may be specially equipped to deal with certain physical conditions or facilitate discussion surrounding end-of-life topics. Counseling for the elderly may also place a greater emphasis on social work-type topics to ensure that geriatric clients have access to necessary resources, such as food, a safe home environment, and healthcare.

How can therapy improve the quality of life of aging individuals?
Therapy for aging adults can greatly improve quality of life by providing an opportunity for them to process difficult emotions related to end-of-life, navigate relational or caregiver challenges, and develop coping skills for common mental health conditions, like anxiety or depression. Subsequent reductions in negative emotions and mental health disorder symptoms can make day-to-day living much more manageable for aging adults and those that care for them. The ongoing relationship with a trusted therapist can also help seniors combat loneliness and provide a sense of structure for their routine.

What are the qualities to look for in therapists who see seniors?
Seniors counselors, like mental health counselors in general, should be kind, empathetic, skilled at listening, and knowledgeable about their particular area of expertise. Counselors specializing in working with the senior population should be very familiar with the aging process in general and the common conditions that the elderly can face, such as dementia, depression, loneliness, and/or physical illness. Many senior counselors are also well-equipped to help caregivers and families navigate the aging process of their loved ones, and they may draw on Interpersonal Therapy to help facilitate improved interactions between seniors and those that care for them.
