I’m a straight ally working with adolescents, young adults, and adults around depression, anxiety, trauma, substance use, and pandemic-related issues. Even after more than 30 years, I remain deeply passionate about my work and continually humbled by my clients' resilience and innate strength. I especially enjoy working with young adults,
women
in transition, and queer or questioning folks. I encourage everyone to screen several therapists and choose the one with whom they feel most heard, respected, and safe. Please don’t settle for anything less.

I just plain like adolescents! In addition, I work with many
women
in mid life.
I have been in practice for many years, yet I still consider my work a privilege. My focus is consistently on helping clients achieve their own goals, adapting my approach to their needs. I hope that my experience and enthusiasm combine to make me effective. I also believe that life is serious enough and that even the most dire of situations will have an opportunity for the use of humor.

My ability to connect with adolescents, young
women
, and their families is what sets me apart from other providers.
If you’re a parent of an adolescent struggling with mental health, know that you don’t have to manage these struggles alone. Feeling helpless about not knowing another way to deal with your child’s presenting problems is difficult. But I'm here to tell you that there is no “wrong” way to parent your child with mental health challenges. I can help both you and your beloved adolescent connect, build resiliency, and manage developmental challenges. We’ll work on communication and improving interactions between you and your child, and I will support you in making informed decisions about your adolescent’s mental health.

After 19 years of working in
women
’s care at the University of Kentucky, I am grateful to be able to serve
women
in my private practice.
Many
women
find themselves struggling with feelings of anxiety, depression, uncertainty and exhaustion while moving through various phases of their lives. These times can feel lonely and challenging such as navigating college life and peer relationships, pregnancy and postpartum mood shifts, or parenting. And some of these times can feel devastating, and sadly include the loss of a relationship, loved one, or child.

women

Before you can even grab your coffee the intrusive thoughts and feelings flood in. The need to do compulsions is on repeat in your mind through out the day. Other people seem connected to their life, moving through it naturally and freely..... You want that too. I hear you! I work with
women
to help them let go of the doubt & the need for certainty and to find peace & contentment in their life. I want you to learn how to stop answering the "what if..." questions and lean into your values-filled life instead!

I periodically offer a sexual empowerment workshop for
women
.
No matter its roots in emotional, medical or physical experiences, trauma of all varieties and degrees stays in the body, sometimes emerging many months or years later in unexpected ways. Relationship friction and troubles with mood can reflect past experiences, some great some small, that may need addressing with an attentive, caring professional. I am passionate about helping motivated clients process trauma or relationship dissatisfaction to work toward a more empowered self.

Female Therapists
Does it matter what gender my therapist is?
In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.
Should I see a female therapist?
Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.
Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?
Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.
How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?
It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
