Hello, the work that I do with individuals, couples and families is based in a mindfulness and cognitive behavior therapy approach. I work with clients to integrate mindfulness skills and cognitive behavior strategies into their daily lives. These strategies help to access a more centered and deliberate way of being. The skills and strategies used are tailored for each individual based on concerns, goals and interests. This approach is great for those who experience
anxiety
, high levels of stress, trauma, depression, or have anger related concerns.

In addition to helping people solve
anxiety
, depression and relationship concerns, my special interests include working with people with chronic illness and infertility.
My style as a therapist is characterized by warmth, honesty, and a non-judgmental, open approach. I strive to help patients understand the nature of their problems and create solutions that can be brought about in a relatively short period of time. I use a range of interventions, including humanistic, existential and psychodynamic approaches. I encourage clients to consider their strengths, take an active role in psychotherapy, and practice positive change in their lives.

Current appt. availability on my website. People come to me because they are struggling and feel stuck. I specialize in working with adults and children/families who are challenged by
anxiety
, ADHD, or "Asperger's" but have experience with many different issues. My approach involves providing info about how the brain works, how to use it as your ally instead of an enemy, and how to find strength in the very things that challenge you. (ex: There are so many wonderful things about having ADHD!) I do this in the context of interpersonal relationships where we talk about things like identity and communication/conflict resolution skills.

As a counselor to children and adolescents, it is my goal to create a safe and comfortable place for individuals to heal and grow from overwhelming or traumatic life experiences. Sometimes these experiences can cause feelings of sadness, loneliness, grief, or
anxiety
. We can often feel stuck in the cycles of
anxiety
and depression or simply overwhelmed by day-to-day tasks. Through our time together, I hope to foster self-compassion, resilience, and confidence to continue on a healing path.

I particularly enjoy working with women aged 20-40 who are working to overcome
anxiety
and depression or are coping with relationship dynamics. I believe most clients have a trauma history that shapes their mental health concerns, and helping them to process and heal from this history is vital to the client achieving a better quality of life. My ideal client will be seeking to learn new coping skills, communication strategies, or relationship skills.

My imagined ideal client may report challenges and self-esteem challenges, manifesting as low mood, unhealthy boundaries, people-pleasing behaviors, social
anxiety
, self-validation, or acceptance struggles. The identified needs include relational improvement, self-confidence, and insight. I highlight the process as aiding the client in identifying triggers and sources of depleted esteem, exploring thoughts and feelings regarding self, others, and the world, and processing maladaptive behaviors. I would journey with the client in unveiling core beliefs that impact esteem and work to recognize strengths and positive qualities.

What are the most common treatments for anxiety?
Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioral therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other popular forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioral Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.
How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?
The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.
When should I seek treatment for anxiety?
Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.
How effective is treatment for anxiety?
Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
