I work with clients on a variety of topics including stress management, anxiety, mood dysregulation,
grief
and
loss
, eating disorders, body image, trauma, self-esteem, individuation, boundary-setting, assertiveness training, identity development, and support for caretakers.
People seek out therapy for a variety of reasons, such as to address an already identified concern, to develop a particular coping skill set, or to enhance self-confidence and quality of life. I work to establish a trusting therapeutic relationship within which a client can share their unique story with a felt sense of validation, empathy, and hope. I work collaboratively with clients as we bare witness to the client's lived experiences looking through a lens of compassionate curiosity and establishing empowered self-agency that leads to patterns of intentional action and overall well-being.

Clients come to me after experiencing a
loss
whether it be from the
death
of a loved one, the end of a marriage/significant relationship or a major life transition. These changes in one's life can bring on feelings of sadness, isolation and fear. As a therapist I believe in the power of telling one's story in a safe and supportive space. My goal is to help clients expand the possibilities when feeling stuck, access their strengths, accept their limitations and practice being present in their daily lives.

All people have the potential to change, grow and find meaning. Trauma and
grief
can interfere with this process and cause you to feel stuck. Many challenges that bring people into therapy (for example, relationship issues, depression and anxiety), have their roots in unresolved trauma and
grief
. As an EMDR therapist, I will help you identify these connections and activate your brain’s own natural ability to heal. EMDR goes beyond the insight sought in traditional talk therapy. By resolving the underlying issues contributing to your problems on a deep, emotional level, we will bring about significant and lasting change.

I have devoted my life's work to
Bereavement
Counseling and Personal Awareness. Each person's
grief
is unique. Everyone has the ability to heal by coming to understand their own style of coping and learning to integrate
loss
into their changed lives. I encourage clients to "teach me" about their losses, and in so doing they come to understand the meaning within their own experience. I help clients to understand what are considered to be the "normal" parameters of
grief
and
loss
. I have added Functional Medicine Health Coaching in my practice to further support my clients through any emotional experience they may be having.

You are facing a significant life challenge. Maybe it's the
death
of an important person, or the end of a relationship, or simply a natural life change. Possibly it is another type of challenge, such as recovery from addiction or trauma. Maybe your child is experiencing their own difficulties and you want to help them, but you aren't sure how. You have questions and concerns: Is what I'm feeling ok? How do I best help and support myself and/or my child? How will I re-make my life? What does healing mean to me ... and who am I as I undertake that process? Your questions are valid, and exploring them could be helpful.

I have been a therapist for over 30 years, seeing individuals, couples, and families. My goal as a therapist is to connect with what you're going through so that I can help you understand and empower yourself more completely. Managing transitions and huge life shifts can create feelings of anxiety and
loss
of identity - like having the rug pulled out from under us. Despite living in unpredictable times, we can still find our strength and resilience. There is a way to feel safe while being in touch with your natural vulnerability.

In addition to my work with addictions, I have had many years of experience (both as a researcher and clinician) working with depression of all types, anxiety disorders, chronic and acute pain conditions, trauma, issues around aging, and
bereavement
.
I focus a great deal on helping people expand their awareness of aspects of themselves and their important relationships that they have difficulty paying attention to and feeling. This increased awareness helps people feel more flexible and free to navigate the obstacles and cross-currents they find facing them in their lives, rather than remain stuck in repetitive cycles of suffering.

Grief Therapists
How long does therapy take for grief?
There is no exact timeline for grief counseling. Some people may start to feel better after just a few sessions, while others may take months or longer to feel relief. Some specific approaches, including some types of CBT, may involve a set number of sessions, or therapy may be open-ended until the patient determines they are ready to wrap up. Just as there is no right or wrong way to grieve, there is no right or wrong way to seek therapy for grief.
When should you seek therapy for grief?
Many people mistakenly believe that their grief needs to be debilitating or all-encompassing to warrant therapy. This is not the case. While people who experience severe, prolonged grief—particularly those who are considering self-harm or engaging in unhealthy substance use—are especially likely to benefit from therapy, so too are people whose grief is less intense but still interfering with well-being or daily functioning. In practice, almost anyone struggling to process a loss could benefit from grief counseling.
Can grief be managed without therapy?
Oftentimes, yes. Grief is a near-universal part of being human, and many find that their grief, while profound, does not stop them from participating in day-to-day life and steadily eases over time without outside help. For others, however, the harsh pain of early grief persists for months or years or leaves them unable to function. This group is especially likely to benefit from seeing a therapist, who can guide them through their grief and help them reconnect with the world.
What happens if grief is left untreated?
Because grief does not in itself necessitate therapy, untreated grief will often resolve on its own. However, for some people—particularly those who would qualify for a diagnosis of prolonged grief disorder—untreated grief can be a source of seemingly endless pain or lead them to withdraw from the world. In such cases, treatment can be indispensable, as it can help an individual adapt to the loss and start living again.
