Experienced with family business, high net worth clients, with specific interest in issues regarding masculinity and femininity.
I have worked with adult couples and individuals for 30 years. We all operate in many worlds, both internal and external, and can easily become confused and distressed. It is privileged work to join with people in helping them in their efforts to sort their lives out. I have a home office in Villanova PA, and work with a sliding scale fee.

As your therapist, I will develop a treatment plan with you to focus on your specific needs, utilizing psychodynamic, strategic family therapy, collaborative problem solving, experiential, and cognitive behavioral strategies.
Children, teenagers, and adults all want to feel in charge of their own lives; I believe in fostering your personal growth and change despite any obstacles you might encounter. As humans, we strive to feel capable, considered, content, centered, and connected to others. I will help you realize your inherent strengths; such as, encouraging parents to feel competent in their parenting strategies; guiding children and teens to respect and understand their parents’ values and expectations; bridging gaps in communication between couples and family members; and challenging you or your child to take new, manageable risks in your life.

I have worked with adolescents and adults, both individual and family therapy, in home/office and community settings.
My approach to treating is… working off a strength-based philosophy. I look for internal resources and personal strengths that can be pulled from the patient in order to help create empowerment and self-compassion. My approaches are largely emotion centered and relational. I identify individual strengths/areas of resource, challenge disruptive patterns/thought processes, and help replace with skills that acknowledge the rooted pain, while at the same time, encourage stepping outside areas of comfort. I also include sessions for self-exploration, to help clients better understand the whys and how’s of their own internal processes

One of my many interests is the challenge placed upon a family or couplewhich includes a member with learning issues or ADHD.
Is it difficult to confront issues with your adolescent, college student or partner because anger and frustration end the interaction before anything is accomplished? Do you feel like your parent doesn't understand you and doesn't listen? Do you feel alienated from your family? I am a clinical psychologist with many years of experience as an individual (adult / child) and family therapist. Communication and resolution of difficult issues is the focus of treatment. Therapy concentrates on solving problems and setting goals. I firmly believe that the emotional safety provided by the therapist sets the foundation for successful work.

My professional focus is on children, adolescents and families. An additional focus is on the individuaI adult. Today, children and teens face adult issues at earlier ages. These challenges often affect the child's educational, social and psychological well-being, which in turn impacts the family as a whole. One of my strengths is dispelling confusion, increasing self-awareness and self-esteem. This assists in facing everyday stresses and challenges, for the child as well as the parent or adult. My work promotes improved confidence, self-esteem and offers insight. These changes will improve mood, performance and relationships.

I specialize in the treatment of weight and eating disorders, depression and anxiety. I provide cognitive-behavioral therapy, which focuses on helping the client to identify thoughts and emotions associated with certain behaviors, and I infuse mindfulness techniques. Through this journey, I help clients understand how and why they are responding to situations in the way that they do, enabling them to find inner peace and lead fuller, more enriched lives. I typically meet with clients on a one-on-one basis, but I am happy to schedule sessions with concerned partners, parents or other family members together with the client.

Please call or email me for an individual, couples or family therapy consultation today.
Our lives tend to be multi-faceted works of art, made up of many roles, relationships, and responsibilities. Oftentimes, we are able to adapt to changes in these roles and responsibilities with little or no difficulty; however there are times in our lives when change can cause distraction, negative feelings, and overall dissatisfaction with our lives. These times are when we can be empowered to discover our true authentic lives, within ourselves and our relationships, by engaging in therapy. During sessions, we will explore ineffective behavior patterns and perceptions to move forward into a better state of mind and lead a more fulfilling life.

Hi, I'm Matt. As a licensed marriage and family therapist (LMFT), my expertise is in reconnecting spouses and family members who genuinely seek to change their relationship. However, I also excel at applying systemic insights to many individual problems, such as anxiety, depression, anger, or low self-esteem. I find the most success with people who've tried everything else, but haven't yet been able to escape the problem they feel stuck with. Systemic insights are evidence based and backed by current research. You don't know it yet, but there's a way in which you and your experiences make sense, and I like it when things make sense.

Family Therapy

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
