Also, I’m dedicated to helping individuals, and their family members, who suffer with substance use disorders and complex trauma.
Change can come in many forms in our lives. It might come suddenly like a tidal wave, or gradually like a slow dripping leak. It might come in the form of devastating tragedy, difficult choices, broken relationships, or even new opportunities. Although change can be extremely hard, it can also be extremely necessary. Experiencing anything great in life requires us to challenge ourselves to push past our comfort zones. However, we oftentimes avoid change out of fear of the unknown, or self-doubt. Other times, we don’t realize the need for change until we experience pain.

Starting a healing journey is easier said than done. Everyone has their own experiences and can provide examples of how life can throw curveballs. It’s important to remember that you do not need to let these experiences define who you are or what you’re capable of. Processing through these experiences is what my role is, as I am here to encourage you to be your best self. We will work together to create realistic goals that allow your light to shine bright. Anything is possible, and I am here to guide your path, which acknowledges the strengths that you already possess.

We develop strategies early in life to ensure our safety. As adults, we often find these strategies are no longer effective and often harmful. As a survivor of complex trauma and a family history of generational alcohol & substance abuse, I believe individuals can and do recover. My personal journey led me to pursue a career helping others to overcome the baggage of their past.

I believe in growth, in renewal, in the idea that we are always becoming. My work isn’t just about helping people manage emotions or change behaviors, it’s about helping them reconnect with themselves in a way that feels whole and real. Healing, to me, is about more than the mind—it’s about the body, the spirit, and the deep, often hidden, parts of our identity that long to be understood. My clients gain a deeper understanding of their emotions, their patterns, and their strengths. They learn to trust themselves, to set boundaries that honor their well-being, and to navigate life with greater clarity and confidence.

Substance Use Therapists
How do substance and drug recovery or rehabilitation programs work?
In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other clients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals reside at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff often also includes people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other methods.
How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?
Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.
How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?
According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for substance use reduce the amount of drugs they consume. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.
Are there specific medications for substance and drug use?
There are medications approved to treat substance use disorder—such as buprenorphine, methadone, naltrexone, and acamprosate. These medications do help people cope with substance use as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone can help reduce cravings, methadone is an opioid medication used to treat severe pain, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.
