I specialize in working with clients who have experienced pet loss/grief, substance abuse disorders, forensic populations, anxiety spectrum disorders such as agoraphobia and panic disorder, OCD, personality disorders, and trauma.
As a therapist, the most important aspect of therapy is working together to create goals for therapy and create a path for meaningful change. My approach is practical, I work from a cognitive perspective using cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical therapy, exposure response prevention, and positive psychology.

I treat clients age 5 and over, and specialize in treating PTSD, anxiety, depression, domestic violence, couples counseling, and custody concerns.
I start each session with understanding where you are in the present moment. From there, a typical session with me would involve a check-in, and diving in to concerns you have. I help you put a plan in place to help you move forward, and will celebrate your successes along the way. At the end of a session with me, it is my hope that you feel relief.

This is all normal if you have experienced narcissistic abuse by a romantic partner or emotionally immature parents.
This type of trauma dysregulates the nervous system and must be approached with both somatic and cognitive techniques. I have completed training under some of the best; including Sandra Brown and The Institute for Relationship Harm Reduction, Dr. Ramani, Patrick Teahan, Kathryn McBride, and Lindsay Gibson to ensure that my skills will meet your needs.

As a licensed clinical social worker with more than 40 years experience of working with families and individuals of all ages, I find that the most effective approach is one that is strengths-based with a strong emphasis on helping clients solve the problems that bring them to me for therapy and also on helping them develop powerful resiliency characteristics that allow for future problem-solving, conflict resolution, goal-attainment, wellness, and life satisfaction. My ideal client is one who likes to learn. Trauma survivors, in particular, do well with this approach.

I love working with individuals and groups who have experienced relationship or systems-based trauma, whether in childhood or adulthood. This can include physical, sexual, verbal, emotional, financial, spiritual, or systemic traumas and may be the result of abusive relationships or living as a marginalized individual in an inadequate and harmful system. I believe that the "symptoms" associated with trauma don't occur because there is "something wrong with you." Rather, I believe that they are evidence of your body and mind's inherent wisdom and ability to establish safety and sovereignty over your own life.

I work with clients who struggle with issues such as anxiety, depression, compulsive behaviors or thoughts, feelings of inadequacy or patterns of self sabotage and want to understand their thoughts and behaviors to find more effective ways to manage them. Many of those I work with are healthcare professionals or others in caring roles who give so much to others that they neglect their own needs. Together, we focus on restoring balance, building coping skills, and regaining a sense of control.

Domestic Abuse Therapists
What are the most effective ways to recover from domestic abuse?
Leaving an abusive relationship requires tremendous courage, so survivors in treatment should recognize that they have already completed the most important step. Still, the trauma of physical or emotional abuse can be difficult to process and overcome. Therapy can help survivors process trauma, grief, and difficult emotions, treat relevant mental health symptoms, and create a new framework for boundaries and relationships in the future. For some, support groups can also be an invaluable outlet for healing.

When should an individual seek help for domestic abuse?
Victims of intimate partner violence should seek help immediately. It can take substantial time, planning, energy, and courage to leave an abusive relationship, but starting the process—by seeking therapy, calling the domestic violence hotline, or simply confiding in a loved one—will help them get there. Those who have left abusive relationships but haven’t sought treatment can also greatly benefit from therapy to process and heal from the experience.

What are the consequences of staying in an abusive relationship?
Remaining in an abusive relationship has serious repercussions. In addition to the ongoing threat of physical danger and emotional abuse, research shows that intimate partner violence is associated with a range of mental health disorders including depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety, and substance abuse. Therefore it’s important for individuals in an abusive relationship to seek help as soon as possible.

How can you get domestic abuse treatment for someone else?
It can be very complicated to identify and leave an abusive relationship; barriers include the threat of violence, financial instability, and family pressures. Those concerned about a loved one in an abusive relationship should talk to them about the situation, provide them with resources such as the domestic violence hotline, and introduce the idea of seeing a therapist due to their concern for the person’s safety and well-being.
