With counseling and assessment, I aim to help clients work through issues related to career, education, and mental health aspects of their lives, including: stress,
anxiety
, depression, burnout, career or major exploration/indecision, toxic workplaces, bad bosses/coworkers, workplace bullying, forced career change, job loss, and end-of-career transition.
We each are journeying a long arc of discovery about who we are, what we can do, how we relate, where we are valued, and why we matter. Our career and education help us chart the course of our identity, and they can create fantastic side trips, unexpected detours, and unfortunate layovers. I work with clients who are navigating the challenges, decisions, and transitions related to their changing landscape of work and school. Like a colorful sunrise, I am energized to work with clients who hope to explore and understand the options for mental wellness available to them as learners, professionals, entrepreneurs, and self-advocates.

I have been in private practice since 1995, and provide psychotherapy in the State College, Pennsylvania area. My office is located just blocks away from the main campus of Penn State University. My approach multi-faceted, although my training is primarily Jungian, psychodynamic, and systems-based. The primary focus of my private practice is individual psychotherapy for adults, although I also work with couples and families.

Has your emotional pain reached a critical point? Do you feel more anxious and scared lately? Do you need guidance dealing with a specific issue in your life? Are you feeling overwhelmed with sadness and loneliness? I provide both brief therapy (1-12 sessions) with a very specific focus and long-term therapy to address deeper, underlying issues. Coming to therapy is often viewed as a weakness, however I appreciate how risky and
anxiety
ridden it can feel to open up to a complete stranger. In my professional experience, coming to therapy requires a great deal of courage and determination, deliberately and consciously facing yourself.

Mental health symptoms like depression,
anxiety
, anger, stress, etc., are just that- symptoms! These symptoms come from somewhere in your life, it is your bodies way of telling you "something's not right" or "there needs to be a change here." It is my passion to help one figure out what these symptoms are trying to tell them. After we understand the message we will work to build knowledge, mindsets, skills, and other insights to continue growth and prevent those symptoms from returning. Or reduce the impact they have on ones life.

What are the most common treatments for anxiety?
Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioral therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other popular forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioral Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.
How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?
The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.
When should I seek treatment for anxiety?
Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.
How effective is treatment for anxiety?
Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
