I have been helping clients of all ages, races, and backgrounds live more fulfilling, rewarding, hopeful lives for as long as I can remember. It was natural for me to become a psychologist and make my mark on the world by doing exactly what I loved to do. Although my clients continually tell me how much they are helped by therapy, I can honestly say that I am the one who is truly changed by helping others. No matter what your difficulties are, I can assure you that you will be changed in some way by entering therapy. There is no difficulty too great or too small to work on in therapy. The only constant in life is change.

More Than Just Talk....... If you haven't been in psychotherapy before, you may not realize that the traditional approach to treatment is to educate the client about their conditions and teach them how to change their own feelings and behaviors. Although this approach can be very helpful, it is usually a long process that depends a great deal on the individual's courageous persistence. Moreover, a change in behavior and belief does not necessarily resolve the history of negative experiences fueling such things as depression and anxiety. These are some of the reasons I offer "More Than Just Talk".

Pain, uncertainty, feelings of being lost and a failure emerge as we seek to find our individual path in life. These feelings often indicate it is time to be found, not that you are "mentally ill." They can indicate the need to connect with your inner Self rather than to substitute unfulfilling forms of social adjustment. My approach focuses on you as a unique individual. It recognizes that you have a Self in the sense that there is a unique inner guidance available to you. I will work as a guide in your journey toward conflict resolution and wholeness.

Do you long for balance amid this chaotic world? Do you struggle in managing your relationships, work, and emotional and/or physical health? In truth, we simply cannot escape the circumstances that are part of the human condition. In fact, most of us have already tried —through drugs and alcohol, through gambling and technology, through food or the restriction of food, through sex and codependency, or through obsession; and the futile attempts to control our experiences and feelings.

“I don’t know who I am anymore”. “I used to be so happy”. “Why is being healthy so hard right now”. “When did it become so hard to get out of bed”. Some days you find yourself asking these questions. You don’t know when it happened, but you barely recognize the person in the mirror. You don’t feel like yourself. You feel lost, stuck and overwhelmed by the little things. You feel guilty because you struggle to be present at your job, with your partner, or your children and family. You want to stop "just getting through another day". You are ready to take your life back. You are ready to thrive.

Whether we're journeying through anxiety, trauma, or eating disorders, together we learn to put names to feelings, discover what those feelings need, and process through them to find healing on the other side- with a whole lot of compassion and a little bit of humor along the way.
In my practice, therapy is all about curiosity and kindness. Whether we’re walking through life-interrupting levels of stress, struggling to overcome a challenging relationship with food, mind-spinning negative self-talk, or overwhelming experiences you no longer want to keep shoving down deep inside, I’m here for that journey with you. Curiosity and kindness help us to hold both the beauty and pain of life together until you are ready to hold it all on your own, and along the way help encourage you while you move towards your feelings, work through your pain, and emerge into life that is full, embodied, and present.

Recovering from an eating disorder and/or severe trauma can frequently be difficult.
I have written an eating disorder workbook, The Slender Trap, available on amazon.com that helps individuals identify whether they have an eating disorder and what to do about it. This is representative of some of the ways that I use art therapy and journaling in my work to help individuals heal.

Eating Disorders Therapists
What happens in therapy for eating disorders?
In therapy for eating disorders, patients typically describe their eating and exercise behaviors, their patterns of eating in relation to stress, their beliefs about their body, the ways their eating behavior affects their relationships, and their desire (or lack of it) to change. Such information helps the therapist understand the origins of the disorder and the role it plays in the patient’s life, important for guiding treatment. Attitudes and feelings about food and eating, body weight, and physical appearance are common topics of discussion throughout treatment.

What therapy types help with eating disorders?
Once any acute medical or psychiatric emergency is resolved, psychoactive medication is often prescribed, requiring the supervision of a psychiatrist. In addition, patients receive some form of nutritional counseling along with one or more forms of psychotherapy. For adolescents, family-based treatment is empirically validated and considered the first line of treatment; parents and their children meet weekly with a clinician as the adults are coached on how to nourish and psychologically support the young patient. Adults typically receive some form of individual psychotherapy, intended to resolve the cognitive and behavioral disturbances that underlie the disorder and to relieve the mood disturbances that accompany it. In addition, patients may also be helped by group therapy.

What is the goal of therapy for eating disorders?
The most immediate goal of treatment for eating disorders is to save the life of people who are on a path of starving themselves to death or engaging in eating patterns that are doing irreparable physical harm to their body. Once the acute medical danger is past, therapy is required to understand the nature of the disordered eating and/or exercise patterns, establish healthy eating behavior, and to tackle the many erroneous beliefs and distorted self-perceptions that underlie eating disorders and continue to pose a threat to health and life. Therapy also addresses the impaired mood that not only accompanies eating disorders but intensifies the danger to health and life.

What are the limitations of therapy for eating disorders?
Therapy can be very helpful for eating disorders—but that can happen only after people recognize they have a condition that must be treated. Especially with anorexia, the distortions in self-image that accompany the disorder can keep people from acknowledging they have a problem. Individuals may in fact see their eating disorder as a badge of self-control. Those with binge-eating disorder may feel too ashamed to seek help. Therapy cannot help those who do not avail themselves of it.

How long does therapy last for eating disorders?
Because of their complexity, recovery from eating disorders is usually a long-term process—measured in months and years— often marked by setbacks and relapse. Some form of help, such as individual or group therapy, may be advisable for much of that time. It is a general rule of thumb that the longer the illness has endured and the dysregulated eating behavior has taken root, the longer treatment is likely to be needed.
