I bring a relational approach when working with
couples
, families, & individuals.
Relationships aren’t always easy, especially our most important ones. In our lives, we are constantly responding to the influences of and affecting those around us. If you and your family, child, or
partner
have been struggling to connect, you're not alone. Many of us get stuck in patterns and, although we try our best, can't find a way back to the relationships we want. In order to find our way back, I believe in tailoring therapy to fit your individual needs by pulling from various treatment approaches. I have trained in Ecosystemic Family Therapy and worked with parents/families in the residential and family-based level of care.

At times life can present us with difficult or traumatic experiences that can feel too overwhelming to navigate alone. Working together, we can create a trusting therapeutic
relationship
in which I will utilize an individualized, integrative approach to therapy. Using a trauma informed strengths-based method to care, I approach each client by considering, “what happened to you?” as opposed to “what is wrong with you?”

I particularly enjoy working with women aged 20-40 who are working to overcome anxiety and depression or are coping with
relationship
dynamics. I believe most clients have a trauma history that shapes their mental health concerns, and helping them to process and heal from this history is vital to the client achieving a better quality of life. My ideal client will be seeking to learn new coping skills, communication strategies, or
relationship
skills.

Trauma, anxiety, depression,
relationship
issues, has been keeping you from your life. Even on good days, your negative self-talk is hard on you. Everyone can be hard on themselves. It’s exhausting trying to anticipate when these feelings will come back again. You can’t trust your own thoughts. It could be that your painful past or current stress isn’t going away on its own. On most days it takes more than that. Feeling stuck in a vicious cycle with no end in sight, you know you can’t handle this alone anymore. Maybe since it happened, something very upsetting occurred, and it changed you. You’ll feel calm You’ll breathe again!

A patient presents with concerns regarding impulsive decision-making and wanting to change
relationship
patterns. She was recently diagnosed with postpartum after giving birth 30 days prior. She is currently in a
relationship
with the child's father and reports being unhappy with his parenting skills. She wants to go out on her own but is afraid he will separate her from the child. In therapy, she has clarified that she does not want to share with him at the child's young age.

My ideal client would be ready for a challenge. Someone who wants their worldview expanded, prepared to find internal and external connection with the world. My ideal client would be someone who also wants their race, sexuality, or gender affirmed by their clinician.

As a counselor, I have always been aware of the courage and openness a client needs to be able to seek support and engage in counseling services. I also understand how difficult it is to make therapeutic changes in one's life. I am humbled to be privileged to learn about a client's intimate struggles, and I take the depth of that
relationship
of respect, privacy, boundaries, and expectations very seriously. My ideal client is anyone open to counseling, receiving feedback, and willing to work together on developing action steps towards change and personal growth.

Couples Counseling Therapists
Does couples counseling work?
Research shows that couples counseling is effective; it can reduce relationship distress and improve emotional awareness, communication, empathy, intimacy, and overall relationship satisfaction. For example, emotionally focused therapy was found to be effective for about 75 percent of couples, and those benefits lasted at least two years.
When should a couple seek counseling?
Couples can benefit from counseling if they consistently struggle in their relationship. They may have lost the ability to communicate effectively, become entrenched in harmful patterns, begun to fight more than usual, broken the other’s trust, suffered from a mental or physical illness, or faced any number of other challenges. Many therapists offer free consultations, so if a couple isn’t sure whether therapy is necessary, asking directly can provide clarity.
How can I get my partner to go to couples therapy?
The decision to seek couples therapy is often driven by one partner, who then convinces the other to participate. When discussing the idea, the initiator should be direct and assertive. They can state the problems they see and explain how the relationship would benefit from therapy. In more serious cases, they can also explain how their relationship may suffer without making any changes or seeking professional help.
How does a couple prepare for couples counseling?
The anticipation of beginning couples counseling can be difficult—sometimes more difficult than the first session itself. Taking a few moments to reflect can allay those concerns: What are the current challenges? When and how did they begin? What do they want the relationship to look like in the future? Reflecting on these questions can help individuals or couples articulate their goals. Of course, the therapist will also ask questions and guide couples through the process.
