I use a relational perspective and believe the a strong and healthy relationship with self is the key to living an authentic, fulfilling life. Together, we’ll collaborate to identify areas of concern, and uncover what is getting in the way of your ability to feel content and free from the confines of social pressures, internal critiques and relational woes.
What would it look like for you to live your life authentically, meaningfully and free? Together, we can find out. We may explore how your family system and trauma adaptations are getting in the way of your ability to manage moods and set boundaries with others. Or maybe you’ve had experiences where you question your self-worth, asking yourself, “Am I good enough? Am I enough?” We may explore where these beliefs and expectations come from, and how to establish self-compassion. Or maybe you’re finding it challenging to regulate your emotions, so we may discover ways to self-regulate and become more grounded in the present.

I am a bilingual marriage and family therapist with twenty years experience working with individuals, couples, and families of various age groups and diversities. One of my primary focuses is Relationship counseling which teaches effective communication skills. Relationship counseling offers an excellent approach between parent and child to understand the stages of development and needs of the children. Another method that has been successful in my practice is Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction. MBSR incorporates techniques such as meditation, gentle yoga and mind-body exercises to help people learn how to cope with stress.

I view persons as made up of emotions, thoughts, relationships, biology, and our spiritual selves. Consequently, I first help you stabilize by making necessary changes in behavior. Medical or neurological contributions and possible nutritional deficiencies are examined. I address any distorted thinking that is contributing to your emotional pain. If systems in your life (family, work, school) are a factor, they are also addressed. Finally, we work with the larger questions of existence (spiritual issues, issues of purpose/ meaning), which are all vital to mental health. All areas are dealt with from a solid grounding in scientific literature and research.

Relational Therapists

How does relational therapy work?

Relational therapy was developed by psychologist Jean Miller, whose ideas stressed that having strong connections with others encourages better health and well-being when compared with a lonely existence. Conversely, poor interpersonal relationships do not foster growth and learning. Relational therapy also encourages trust in others and patience with others, along with better communication and less conflict.

Is relational therapy evidence-based?

Relational therapy is not well-studied, and it may not be as effective in treating certain mental health conditions when compared with evidence-based treatments like cognitive behavioral or acceptance and commitment therapy. However, relational therapy uses techniques found in cognitive behavioral therapy as well as psychodynamic therapy, which are both well-studied with empirical research.

How long are people typically in relational therapy?

Clients may see improvement after a few weeks or months of therapy. Like cognitive behavioral therapy, relational therapy can reduce symptoms within 10 to 20 weeks, at 45 to 50 minutes once a week. But like any type of therapy, improvement depends on the person and the severity of the problem.

Does relational therapy work?

While no therapy type will work for everyone, some evidence suggests that this therapy can be effective. Relational therapy can help a person manage problematic relationships as well as the mental health conditions that accompany difficult relationships like depression or anxiety. This therapy type may offer benefits that are hard to measure but can be just as valuable—including feelings of higher self-worth or healthier connections with others.
