I offer services to ages 10 and up, including individual and internal
family
system sessions as needed to help individual clients move forward in pursuing their life goals.
Everyone has a lens through which we view the world created by our unique experiences, struggles, triumphs, and diverse cultural languages, but so often we feel as if we lack the voice to express our true selves and needs to others. We struggle to find the courage to live authentically in a world that often doesn’t understand or validate our humanity, empathy, and sense of self. As we find self-empowerment, we can come together to empower our families, communities, and ultimately our world as a united whole to meet the challenges we face as human beings. Therapy can help overcome past trauma to help us live fully in the present.

The decision to enter psychotherapy can be difficult. Most of us would like to think we can solve our problems on our own, or at least with the help of friends and
family
. If you are looking for a therapist, chances are you have already tried doing just that, possibly with great effort over a long time, and are feeling discouraged about the result. The problems may be new or all too familiar. Therapy can help with two levels of concern: at a practical level, what to do to cope? at an underlying level, what to do to heal?

I am a licensed clinical psychologist working primarily with adolescents, families with younger children, and adults struggling with
family
relationships. I see many children presenting with oppositional and defiant behaviors, overcoming trauma and abuse, or suffering from significant mood dysregulation, each of which can put a whole
family
in distress. My work with adults generally focuses on issues of marital relationships, divorces, and parenting. I help people resolve conflicts, improve communication, and change unproductive habits. I also often treat anxiety and stress related to work, trauma, and relationships.

I have completed Level 1 Training in Internal
Family
Systems (IFS), in addition to training in other approaches.
As a therapist, I work with my clients to help them move toward a fulfilling, connected, and meaningful life. As human beings, we each have core yearnings to belong, to feel our experience is meaningful, and to know our lives matter. Unfortunately, because life sometimes involves emotional, psychological, social, and physical pain we can get stuck in patterns that don’t serve us. I help people develop insight into who they are and what they want, so they can make choices with greater clarity and confidence and live with greater balance and healing.

Family Therapy
What do family therapists do?
A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.
How long does therapy for families take to work?
Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.
How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?
You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.
Is therapy for families effective?
Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
