As a Licensed Professional Counselor, it's my goal to help you feel respected and create a safe environment for you to share whatever you need to during therapy. It is my intention to empower you, strengthen your individuality, help to strengthen your belief that you have great worth, and that you can overcome traumatic events and memories. We are more than the thoughts we have that we're ashamed of, we're more than the worst moments of our lives, much more than our mistakes, and in my practice, I respect the courage it takes to be vulnerable, honest, and open to new ways of thinking.

Are you “stuck”—either on something that’s changed in your life, in the world around us, or just in general? Maybe something just feels strange or "off". Change is intimidating, even when we take it one step at a time, and often we can’t see the full picture without stepping away for a wider view. Sometimes, you just need another perspective - one that's neutral and doesn't "take sides." Your situation, just like you, is unique, and I can help you through it. I’m here to honor your struggle and help you build on the skills you have. I can help you respect or heal past decisions and help you to define new ones.

We can discuss which approach fits well with you- ACT, EMDR, mindfulness, supportive talk therapy, Gottman therapy for relationship issues, etc.
Even when it seems like you should be at your best, you are reminded of the worst moments of your life. Your worst memories get replayed. You feel as if you are alone even though there are people around you. You feel suffocated in public. Things you know should not be a problem often feel dangerous or scary anyway. Times of year, smells, sounds, phrases often trigger this in you. These are signs of trauma. Or maybe, in relationships, everything feels like it has to be a fight? Are you and your partner constantly "at each other" for what seems like "no reason"? Even in good relationships, this can be problematic.

The decision to seek help from a mental health professional is not an easy one. If you've never been in therapy before, you likely have no idea what to expect, and you may worry that you'll be judged, criticized, or labeled as "crazy." If you have been to therapy before, the thought of "starting all over" with someone new can also be overwhelming, especially if your previous experiences haven't been very helpful. Whether you're a therapy veteran or a newbie, I believe I can help.

Most frequently utilized modalities include CBT, ACT, Gestalt, and Motivational Interviewing.
“In any given moment, we have two options: to step forward into growth or step back into safety.” My ideal client is tired of “playing it safe” and is open to the newness that change brings. My ideal client is not only searching for a way out of their situation, but they are ready to gain the tools needed to improve their quality of life. Therapy is not about being told what to do, it’s finding a great fit with a skilled clinician who will join you in your journey to wellness. Rather than trying to fix things on your own, why not collaborate with someone who celebrates your individuality and incorporates it in your healing process?

One of the greatest things about challenges in life is that we’re given the opportunity to discover we’re stronger than we ever imagined. Understanding that we can develop the skills necessary to conquer life’s challenges is critical to creating the life we want for ourselves. I have twenty years of experience in the mental health field having worked in a hospital setting at UPMC Western Psychiatric Hospital, residential treatment and outpatient levels of care.

In my individual, couples, and family work, values of collaboration, mutuality, and connection guide my practice. I partner with clients to identify their own unique strengths that can be used as resources to foster growth and change. I am attentive to the role of early family experiences, cultural values, oppression, and stigma in shaping client's experiences. Particularly when addressing painful or traumatic areas, I attend to clients' emotional safety using mindfulness and body awareness. I believe that healing happens in the context of honest relationships and invite my clients to engage in open dialog about our work together.

Acceptance and Commitment (ACT) Therapists
How does acceptance and commitment therapy work?
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy encourages a person to listen to their self-talk. A person’s inner dialog can be indicative of how they treat themselves. ACT also encourages self-compassion; this can lead to a better understanding of negative thought patterns and emotional states. This understanding can then lead the individual to needed behavior change.

What are the goals of acceptance and commitment therapy?
The goal of acceptance and commitment is to expand a person’s psychological flexibility, a trait that encourages an individual to live in the present moment and to accept all their thoughts, feelings, and emotions, even ones that are difficult such as sadness and anxiety. In ACT, this acceptance is congruent with the individual’s values and beliefs.

Does acceptance and commitment therapy work for depression?
Acceptance and commitment therapy is effective for depression because it allows the individual to view their discomfort and suffering differently. Depressive feelings about relationship heartaches, for example, are a part of life. A despondent person learns to let go of their struggles and instead view their painful thoughts and feelings with compassion. This will lead the individual toward positive change.

How long are people typically in acceptance and commitment therapy?
A typical acceptance and commitment therapy session is 50 minutes long with one session per week. Treatment for common problems such as anxiety, depression, or relationship difficulties can last between eight weeks to four months. However, more severe cases may require more than one session a week and/or a longer time frame for treatment.
