My specialty areas include trauma-informed care, mental health well-being, substance use disorders, and marriage & family counseling.
When people feel weighed down by the heaviness that seems to consume them, providing a sense of space and reconstruction that allows a shift to occur is vital. In that shift, I hope to provide a supportive environment where they will feel that weight move and become the foundation on which they can rebuild their life. This heaviness is a unilateral condition experienced by all human beings. The secret is to create a skillset that permits the transition from weight being carried to weight being conquered. In my opinion, there is no ideal client, however, there is a blueprint of individual success for everyone.

Compulsive behaviors impact all aspects of one’s life, including thoughts, feelings, and actions. They can lead to various addictions, including substance use , sex, social media, relationships, gambling, and more. People with compulsive behaviors often struggle to align their actions with personal goals. For more than twenty years, I have supported individuals struggling with compulsive behaviors. I built my practice upon the idea that anyone can recover if given the right tools and environment, and I aim to provide a safe space where clients gain insight into their emotions, experiences, and behavioral patterns.

I have special interest and experience with an array of concerns including anxiety, depression, stress, relationship issues, family issues, anger management, substance use , trauma, coping skills, adjustment issues, school/college concerns and forensic issues.
"I'm not going to tell you to get over it, I'm going to help you get through it." For over 20+ years I have guided individuals on their path towards healing, higher self-awareness, and overall wellness. Many of us struggle with feeling alone, left out, unheard, tired, unconnected, anxious, sad, or fearful. Therapy is a way to change those negative feelings and to address all of the "stuff" we have pushed so far down that we don't know where to start. And you don't have to do it alone.

I have experience working with adults, college-aged adults, adolescents struggling with severe mental illness (depression, anxiety, trauma) and substance use .
Understanding the unsettling feelings, emotions, and thoughts that you may be experiencing can be an incredibly complex task to grapple with on your own. It can feel even more daunting when you think of how to try and explain what is going on to someone else. I strive to provide a supportive and collaborative environment to assist you in taking the time to explore the things you seek to understand. My goal is to help you build your “mental tool box” with effective coping skills, confidence, and self-awareness to tackle any obstacle that is thrown your way.

Substance Use Therapists

How do substance and drug recovery or rehabilitation programs work?

In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other clients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals reside at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff often also includes people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other methods.

How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?

Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.

How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for substance use reduce the amount of drugs they consume. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.

Are there specific medications for substance and drug use?

There are medications approved to treat substance use disorder—such as buprenorphine, methadone, naltrexone, and acamprosate. These medications do help people cope with substance use as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone can help reduce cravings, methadone is an opioid medication used to treat severe pain, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.
