My methods incorporate overall well-being with instruction in mindfulness and focus on spirituality if desired.
I believe in treating everyone with compassion and sensitivity, never knowing what someone might have experienced during their lifespan. This means that issues are viewed through the perspective "What has happened to you" as opposed to "What's wrong with you"--a trauma informed approach. I am likewise experienced with weight loss issues, stress management skills building, anxiety disorders, insomnia, relationship issues, and chronic health conditions.

Along with traditional therapeutic models such as CBT, DBT, MI, and psychodynamics, I also have experience integrating additional concepts including trauma, self-esteem and compassion, healthy relationships, kink and poly-friendly, diet culture recovery / Health At Every Size, and spirituality .
I think that therapy doesn’t have to be complicated. As a client you can expect to highlight your strengths, speak to your individual experience in a non-judgmental environment, receive unconditional support from someone you trust, and learn new ways to lessen your pain. Therapy is a wonderfully transformative venture, where two people collaborate on how to navigate the human experience. My approach is strengths-based, person-first, and multifaceted to meet your specific needs.

in Theology, helping me to better understand the role spirituality may play in our lives.
The concept of therapy can be intimidating... My goal is to make it comfortable for you to discuss your situations by providing an honest, non-judgmental atmosphere, while offering support and validation. Throughout my career, I have helped individuals cope with stress, anxiety, depression, and low self-esteem, as well as grief and loss, problems within family systems and relationships, and trauma-related issues. I have helped individuals dealing with addictions and substance abuse, and have also helped young adults in higher education transition to new environments and social settings.

I became a therapist because I have found that helping others is one of the greatest privileges afforded to a person. For me, working with people experiencing difficulty is a both a passion and a calling. My sense of purpose in life-what I describe as my spirituality -is directly connected to finding ways to be of service to other people. I have a tattoo on my wrist that summarizes my philosophy of life and of therapy. The tattoo is of the Japanese characters for "Kintsugi."

Spirituality , religion, and/or faith can also be explored as preferred throughout discussing personal growth, self-awareness, and meaningful relationships in life.
While every counseling experience is unique, the team at Pittsburgh Pastoral Institute (PPI) seeks to provide an empathetic relationship in which individuals and families can safely and freely discuss their challenges and concerns in a holistic context carefully considering the mind, body, and soul in therapy. This is also a "person-centered" process in which the client determines the areas of exploration and discovery.

Spirituality Therapists

What should I expect from therapy that incorporates a focus on spirituality?

Spirituality can mean different things to different individuals, depending on their experiences, beliefs, and life histories. Some individuals focus on strengthening their belief system, while others experience spirituality in secular ways, such as through meditation, yoga, or by spending time in nature. Clients can expect a therapist to help guide and grow their spirituality through any of these techniques, encouraging the individual to cope with the challenges they face and develop strategies to build resilience and purpose to improve their outlook in life.

What are the most common treatments that include spirituality?

There are several treatments that incorporate spirituality. Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT) helps a person examine and reframe their negative thoughts and behaviors. Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) focuses on emotional acceptance and psychological flexibility. Existential therapy is most often used to address anxiety, depression, grief, loneliness, apathy, despair, questions of identity, and feelings of purposelessness and existential dread. Transpersonal therapy focuses on a client’s spirituality and meaning in life and may incorporate techniques including meditation, visualization, hypnotherapy, dream analysis, and or breathwork.

Can therapy incorporating spirituality help atheistic or agnostic individuals?

Yes. For non-believers, spirituality can offer benefits including a greater sense of connection to others and to the natural world. An interest in spirituality may also spur individuals to pursue mindfulness practices, or to contemplate their purpose in life and how to achieve it.

How effective is spirituality as a therapeutic remedy?

Research suggests spirituality is generally beneficial for individuals. It is correlated with better health habits, such as less substance use, and an improved capacity to cope with stress and other mental health challenges. Increased spirituality can lead individuals to become more empathic and less materialistic, as well.
