That feeling when you cannot catch your breath and you are frozen … unable to move, to control the thoughts in your mind, or the tears streaming from your eyes. You have been hit with a gut punch, left wondering how to put the pieces back together and, for just one moment, not catch a break; rather, just catch your breath.

Having worked with many veterans at the VA Medical Center, I also have special interests in trauma and sleep difficulties (CBT-I and IRT).
I believe therapy is most helpful in an atmosphere of acceptance and respect. In a safe and collaborative environment, we can work together toward your personal goals. I am passionate about helping my clients cope with life stressors, to get relief from painful emotional symptoms, and to feel understood. Beginning therapy is not easy. My approach to therapy begins with helping clients to define their goals and to empower them to move toward the most fulfilling life possible.

I believe in treating everyone with compassion and sensitivity, never knowing what someone might have experienced during their lifespan. This means that issues are viewed through the perspective "What has happened to you" as opposed to "What's wrong with you"--a trauma informed approach. I am likewise experienced with weight loss issues, stress management skills building, anxiety disorders, insomnia , relationship issues, and chronic health conditions.

Using a variety of treatment methods, my practice focuses on helping individuals struggling with anxiety, depression, adjustment, self-esteem, communication difficulties, loss, specific phobias, sleep hygiene and intimacy issues.
***I currently have daytime openings. No evenings or weekends.*** At times, life can present us with obstacles that are difficult to navigate and though we know we need to make changes we don’t always know how to begin. We all need support and an empathetic ear and with that we are all capable of adapting. I have worked with children, families and adults for more than 20 years as they have adjusted to life’s circumstances. Over that time I have seen the impact that talking, listening and empathy can have in our lives.

You're slamming the alarm clock; it was another night of broken sleep . Feeling drained and wishing for a moment of peace and happiness. You are giving to others when you're running low and rarely have time for yourself. Pressures and stress are piling up and weighing on your shoulders. You want to reach out for help but are scared of being vulnerable. At night when you lay down to sleep , the thoughts are racing and the worries return. All that you want is understanding, support, and acceptance.

I use a holistic approach to treatment emphasizing on rapport building. "There is a reason for all behavior and when it comes to people seeking true wellness, I don't want people to depend on medication." I enjoy helping people change and explore themselves. "The scarecrow, in the movie The Wiz, thought that he did not have a brain. He believed that he was just a sack of old newspapers; but, it took the experience of a "journey" to help him realize that he was not just a sack of newspapers but a wealth of information. "Lets find your wealth!"

Sleep or Insomnia Therapists

How effective is treatment for insomnia?

The most effective treatments for insomnia are behavioral techniques that reduce anxiety, including anxiety about falling asleep, and allow the body’s natural cycles to be recalibrated. The most common treatment is cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I), which researchers have found to be more useful than medication, with rates of success as high as 80 percent.

Are there specific medications for sleep problems?

There are many medications, both over-the-counter and prescription that treat sleep problems. Supplements such as melatonin are popular and may help, though there is little evidence that it is more effective than a placebo. Prescription medications such as zolpidem are sometimes prescribed.

Are there natural treatments for sleep problems?

There are many natural treatments for everyday sleep problems. Reducing blue-light emitting screens, setting a regular bedtime, regular exercise, reducing caffeine and nicotine consumption, and keeping the bedroom dark and cool at night are all lifestyle changes that can help those who struggle with sleep but may not reach the level of an insomnia diagnosis.

What’s the difference between having trouble falling asleep and insomnia?

Life events, stress, and anxiety can lead to sleepless nights for everyone from time to time. To be diagnosed with insomnia, a patient must experience trouble falling asleep, trouble remaining asleep, waking up too early, or non-restorative sleep at least three nights per week for at least one month. Sleep problems affect one-third to one-half of the population, while chronic insomnia affects about 10 to 15 percent of people.
