Sexual Abuse Therapists in Pittsburgh, PA
I enjoy working with people who are struggling with trauma, anxiety, life transitions, and problems with self-esteem. I believe we each have the ability to understand and overcome our past traumas and current life stressors. I believe a supportive and safe space is necessary for people to overcome barriers and feel comfortable processing feelings, thoughts, and experiences.

My specialties include: couple/marital therapy; sexual abuse and trauma recovery; as well as working with issues of religion/spirituality, race/ethnicity, gender, and sexual orientation.
I do not have a "one approach fits all" philosophy of therapy. Some approaches work well for some people, while other people respond better to a different approach. Having said that, it is probably most accurate to say my primary therapeutic orientation is based in Family Systems Theory.

Hi there, I'm Sara! I am a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) who specializes in providing trauma-informed therapy to adults and teens who reside in Pennsylvania. Most of my clients come to me because they're feeling stuck in the past or feel like they can't "get over" something terrible that happened to them. It seems like no matter what they do, they can't move on. They can see how their trauma is affecting their mood, self-esteem, anxiety, and even their relationships, but feel helpless to change it. If this sounds familiar, I might be able to help!

Raising children is a fulfilling and puzzling part of our lives. From that first day we meet our new baby, a world of hope, wishes, and new possibilities begin. Parents don’t leave the hospital with a guidebook on how to address every bump and hurdle along the way. Children are unique, complex, and exciting. Sometimes however, they also need extra support. In my therapeutic work, I partner with you to understand the needs of your family and that of your child. Together we explore the concerns which bring you into my office – whether trauma, adjustment, anxiety, school related concerns, or behavioral challenges.

Sexual Abuse Therapists
How do therapists treat sexual abuse?
A good therapist will be nonjudgmental and possibly demonstrate active listening, repeating back what the client says to show that they have understood. These skills allow people to feel comfortable discussing their traumatic experiences openly. Some important treatment goals are to restore a sense of safety and to rebuild confidence. In addition to working one-on-one with the patient, a therapist might bring in supportive family members to assist the client.
Do you have to talk extensively about sexual abuse in therapy?
Survivors frequently find it difficult to describe what happened to them out loud. They can even still be in a state of denial if the sexual abuse occurred recently. It is important for survivors to acknowledge that what happened isn’t their fault and to challenge and reappraise any unhealthy feelings or thoughts as they arise. Art therapy and play therapy are useful non-verbal means of communication for some survivors.
How long does treatment for sexual abuse take?
Recovery from sexual abuse can be a long and difficult process. Some survivors are able to move on naturally on their own, given time, while others require the guidance of a trained therapist. Therapy needs vary and can range from a few sessions to months or even years. Healing from sexual abuse takes time, and everyone’s journey will look a little different.
Can trauma symptoms caused by sexual abuse come back after treatment?
As occurs in many cases of trauma, survivors of sexual abuse may experience PTSD-like symptoms long after the abuse has ceased or after an initial round of treatment has occurred. In such a case, there is evidence that prolonged exposure therapy is a useful treatment for survivors, and may be more efficacious than supportive counseling alone. While triggers may continue to cause distress, the idea is that, with time and repeated exposure, their power will fade, allowing survivors to move on with their lives.
