And I'm a lesbian, neurodivergent, trans-affirming therapist!
As someone who grew up closeted in an extremely religious household, I get what it’s like to feel like you don’t belong or need to push away parts of yourself. I can never fully understand what it’s like to be you, but I can connect with you through the shared experience of being a person who’s trying their best to figure out who the hell they are.

I work with folks who experience the intersection between being Highly Intelligent/Gifted and having Autism/ADHD/OCD/other Neurodivergence, often referred to as being Twice-Exceptional (2E).
In more concrete terms, I practice integrative psychotherapy, primarily utilizing existential and psychodynamic (i.e. Lacanian) perspectives, subbing in parts of structured modalities (i.e. DBT, Schema) when warranted. It’s crucial to navigate both our more conscious thinking alongside the behind-the-scenes parts of our brain that do lots of heavy lifting.

I work primarily with neurodivergent, disabled LGBTQIA+ individuals and couples from a person-centered, trauma-focused and trauma-informed lens, which means I want our time together to be collaborative. Many of the people I work with are carrying the weight of stress, anxiety, identity questions, and relational wounds, often shaped by generational trauma and systemic barriers tied to their marginalized identities. They're looking for a space to reconnect with their values, and begin making sense of what’s getting in the way of moving through the world as their whole self. Whether you're exploring cultural identity, healing from trauma, or moving through life transitions, you deserve support that recognizes your full story and the systems that have shaped it.

I am an LGBTQIA+ ally and understand the complexities of living with neurodivergence.
Being in therapy with me is like being in a book club. That's a little exaggerated, but I do like to recommend reading material and other media sources to supplement the work we do in session. As a therapist, I'm curious and analytical. I like to think of treatment as a puzzle we're solving together.
Choosing the right therapist for you, someone who fits with your personality and understands where you're coming from, will support a positive therapy experience. I am someone who likes to employ whimsy and humor, when appropriate, to help clients feel at ease.

Therapy requires we slow down long enough to look at our lives with a bit more curiosity, a lot less judgment. That is my goal in supporting you with what brings you to therapy: as a therapist and clinical manager at Calm Pittsburgh, our sessions will be a collaboration, a space to observe and reconcile the narratives we tell, read between the lines of our daily habits, and approach our unhelpful patterns with openness and flexibility.

I am also autistic and ADHD, so I practice from a neurodivergent-affirming perspective and share my lived experience.
In the words of Mr. Rogers, “Play is really the work of childhood." I see kids who have prenatal, preverbal, or early childhood trauma; attachment and behavioral issues; or struggle with anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, and anger. I will work with you to create a flexible treatment plan tailored to your child's individual needs, using techniques like prescriptive play therapy, filial therapy, expressive arts, sandtray, geek therapy, and attachment-based activities to directly address and heal the impact of stress on the body and brain. I help identify the reasons for children’s behavior and healthier ways to meet those needs.

FAQ - Neurodivergent Counselling
What does neurodivergent mean?
Neurodivergent is a broad term used to describe people whose brains process, learn, or respond to information in ways that differ from what is considered “typical.” Neurodivergence can include autism, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), dyslexia, Tourette syndrome, and other forms of neurological difference. The term comes from the idea of neurodiversity, which recognizes that differences in brain function are a natural part of human variation. Rather than viewing neurodivergence only through the lens of neurological disorders, this perspective acknowledges that neurodivergent people may experience both strengths and challenges. For example, a person may be very creative and intelligent, while also needing support with sensory sensitivity or learning differences.
What issues do neurodivergent people commonly bring to therapy?
Neurodivergent people often seek therapy for many of the same reasons as anyone else, including anxiety, depression, stress, relationship concerns, or major life transitions. They may also want support with challenges specifically related to neurodivergence; for example, therapy may help with executive functioning, social communication, sensory sensitivity, school/learning stress, or the experience of feeling misunderstood in society. Therapists can also help individuals and families diagnose conditions, as well as distinguish regular challenges associated with childhood and/or adolescence from more enduring conditions. When needed, a therapist may also provide referrals to additional specialists, such as occupational therapists or psychiatrists who can prescribe psychiatric medication.
What therapeutic approaches work well for neurodivergent clients?
Therapy for neurodivergent clients is often most helpful when it is flexible and affirming. Rather than expecting every client to fit one standard model of therapy, neurodivergent-affirming therapists may adapt sessions to each person’s needs and therapy goals. Often, this includes visual aids, movement breaks, or other therapy supports. Common structured therapeutic approaches like Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) can be useful for some neurodivergent clients, but the approach may need to be modified to avoid feeling overly rigid or focused on changing traits that are part of a person’s natural neurodivergence. Other approaches, including Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and mindfulness-based approaches, may also be helpful depending on the client’s needs.
Who is included in Psychology Today's directory of neurodivergent therapists?
Psychology Today’s directory of neurodivergent therapists includes professionals who self-identify as neurodivergent, as well as therapists who describe their work as neurodivergent-affirming or who specialize in areas such as ADHD, autism, learning differences, or sensory processing concerns. When reviewing a therapist’s profile, look at their bio, listed specialties, treatment approach, and experience working with neurodivergent clients. You may also want to consider whether they offer supports that matter to you, such as online therapy, accessible office space, or familiarity with specific concerns like anxiety, depression, or trauma.
