Hi, I'm Dr Shelly Hanlon. I'm a licensed and board certified clinician with over 30 years of experience. My approach to practicing psychotherapy is to first work collaboratively with you, on identifying and harnessing your innate strengths, and talents. Then together, we will work in a safe and comfortable setting to develop strategies and "life hacks," that will ensure therapeutic change and personal growth. By analyzing existing patterns, within the context of one's own life experience, we will develop a behavioral approach that will result in a greater sense of empowerment and the opportunity for life long success.

Many come to therapy to change patterns of relating to others and themselves that they feel no longer serve them. I believe that these patterns, hard as they may be now, likely played some important role for you in the past. Perhaps addictions, habits, or defenses met otherwise unmet needs in your life, but now have become limiting and compulsive. I see myself as your partner in a process of deep listening to facilitate growth, healing, and new possibilities for relating to self and others. Specialties and modalities include: Clinical Hypnosis, gender therapy, trauma, addictions. Also see my group therapy option.

As a health psychologist, I work with people interested in the health of the mind, body, and spirit. Stress, Anxiety, and Depression are often related to both physical and mental conditions so the whole person responds to treatment. Mood is a function of the mental, physical, and spiritual state so treatments involving all parts of the self are most effective. Clients with trauma, post-traumatic stress disorder, and short-term issues are the typical clients in the practice. Sessions are primarily telehealth. I accept Medicare insurance and private pay.

My practice integrates evidence-based and alternative modalities, including Depth Psychology, EMDR, Solution Focused Hypnosis, Hypnotherapy, PLR, Energy Psychology, and Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT).
Many of the clients I work with feel caught between being too much and not enough at the same time. You may be highly sensitive, intuitive, and deeply aware of the needs of others, yet still find yourself questioning your worth or second-guessing your choices. You might overthink conversations, feel responsible for other people’s emotions, or hold yourself to impossible standards while quietly feeling like you are falling short. In therapy, we explore where these patterns began and work to shift the beliefs that keep you stuck so you can develop greater self-trust and live with more clarity, confidence, and emotional freedom.

Relationships are not just about fixing communication or managing conflict. They are about awareness, presence, and how we meet one another in moments of closeness and rupture. You are likely longing not only for relief, but for transformation that includes personal awareness and responsibility, allowing for a more honest, resilient, and alive way of relating that supports repair, growth, and deeper connection over time.

"Before you diagnose yourself with depression or low self-esteem, make sure that you are not, in fact, just surrounded by a-holes." (William Gibson) We take on a lot of stress from those around us - at work, at home, from strangers, from spouses & kids. From rage & stress, to grief, through life-stagnation & confusion to betrayal and divorce, my clients tend to be articulate & very smart, and prefer a counselor who is a realist, not someone who re-hashes old techniques or spouts trendy remedies.

My approach brings 35 years of life and professional experience (and two corgis) to the therapy relationship. I am interested in working with people who seek guidance in finding personal meaning and the best quality of life possible. I operate from a solutions-focused, strengths-based perspective that sees my client as a unique person with the capacity for change rather than some "ism" or "ideology". I prefer not to dwell with people who are "stuck in a victim mentality" and see themselves as powerless. No conversations are too difficult nor off limits. My perspective is grounded in cognitive behavioral therapy and existentialism.

Many of us experience recurring feelings of loss, being lost, not belonging, unshakable sadness, anxiety about future outcomes. We may have experienced trauma, tragedy, abuse as a child or as an adult, toxic relationships or substance abuse etc. If you are reading this you have survived it and I salute your resilience. However sometimes we struggle to feel healthy and wholesome again. The good news is that no feeling is FINAL. Feelings come and go like the weather based on the thoughts that spin around in our heads. The most efficient way to handle such uncomfortable feelings is to learn how to understand and manage our thoughts.

How does hypnotherapy work?
Hypnotherapy works by using guided hypnosis to help you reach a state of focus and concentration through mental imagery and soothing verbal repetition. The state is somewhat like being absorbed in a book, a movie, or your own thoughts. You are not under a therapist’s “control,” but they can help you relax and turn your attention inward to discover the resources to achieve behavior change or better manage psychological concerns. Therapy sessions may involve guiding you through recognizing a problem, releasing problematic thoughts about it, and considering and accepting more productive alternatives before returning to normal awareness. Hypnotherapy is typically used by a therapist along with traditional forms of talk therapy. Eventually, your therapist can help you learn hypnotherapy techniques yourself so you can establish a stronger sense of control on your own in stressful or challenging moments.
Is hypnotherapy the same as hypnosis?
Hypnotherapy, which is sometimes called hypnotic suggestion, is a therapeutic technique in which a therapist uses hypnosis to help patients. It is not the kind of hypnosis portrayed in stage shows, or in movies or on television. You will not be unconscious or asleep during hypnotherapy, you will not lose control of yourself, your thoughts, or your free will, and you will be able to fully recall your experience. And while you will hear your therapist’s suggestions, it is always up to you to decide whether to act on them. Hypnosis by a trained mental-health professional is not a form of mind control, which is impossible to achieve anyway.
Can everyone be hypnotized?
The most common challenge of hypnotherapy is that as many as one in four people cannot be hypnotized. Brain imaging has confirmed differences in patterns of brain connectivity between those who respond to hypnotism and those who do not. Other people who could potentially be hypnotized may not respond to the technique because of their skepticism or resistance to entering a hypnotic state. If a therapist’s “post-hypnotic suggestion” is effective, it’s because they are suggesting something you want to achieve.
Does hypnotherapy work?
Through hypnotherapy, you can achieve changes that are real and sustainable. Like other talk therapy techniques, when hypnotherapy succeeds, it’s a case of mind over matter. Effective hypnotherapy involves self-healing because you access resources you need to change inside of yourself and learn how to tap into them whenever you need. Hypnotherapy has been shown to be an effective therapy for anxiety, phobias, stress, panic attacks, post-traumatic stress disorder, sexual dysfunction, and undesirable behaviors like smoking. It can be used to help improve sleep or to address relationship challenges, and to aid with pain management, digestive disorders, skin conditions, and the gastrointestinal side effects of pregnancy or chemotherapy.
