Everyone experiences life in their own way and therefore our thoughts, feelings and perceptions are unique to each individual. Although words are our primary method of communication, words sometimes cannot fully express our emotions and experiences. As a Registered and Board Certified
Art
Therapist (ATR-BC), as well as a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), I use

My graduate training is in both
Art Therapy
and Counseling Psychology; however, no interest in
art therapy
is necessary for an appointment.
My clinical focus is helping clients increase confidence, feel more fulfilled, and create satisfying relationships. I believe people have the inner power to heal and to grow; I can provide emotional support and guidance for those who are struggling with this process. My approach to psychotherapy is an integration of cognitive-behavioral therapy & expressive techniques (i.e.,
art
, writing, yoga) within a trauma-informed model. More simply said, I assist clients in understanding how their experiences and perceptions impact their emotions and their stories of their lives, & how to change how they think and feel about themselves and others.

As an
art
therapist, my approach to therapy is creative and integrated.
Change is an inevitable part of life that can sometimes be scary, anxiety inducing, and difficult to cope with. Because change is often fraught with unknowns, I believe a strong therapeutic relationship – one that is built on trust, empathy, compassion, and non-judgement – is essential to the healing process. My focuses include working with adults of all ages to address a variety of concerns, such as anxiety, depression, life transitions, self-esteem, and grief and loss. I also have experience working with individuals diagnosed with chronic or terminal illnesses, as well as their family members and caregivers.

I love combining my passions for
art
and psychology.
Participating in therapy can help individuals to be healthier, happier and improve their overall quality of life. The therapeutic setting is a great place to explore the connection between thoughts/feelings/behaviors, identify triggers/patterns, develop new coping skills, learn social skills leading to improved interpersonal relationships with friends and family, process trauma and loss, and increase self-awareness in order to become the very best version of one’s self. As an LPC and
art
therapist, I use an eclectic approach to therapy aimed at trying to align clients with interventions that fit best for them as individuals.

I feel that
art
is an incredibly powerful form of expression and can allow us to gain insight into ourselves that may not be obtained through talk therapy alone.
I believe that therapy is a leap of faith taken to explore ourselves, where we’ve been, where we are, and where we hope to go. It can be a scary leap to take, but I make it my goal to support clients every step of the way along their own individual journey. This step into the unknown can be scary- even terrifying-but I feel that through open communication and exploration, these steps can become powerful, moving, and exciting. I believe that every individual has unique needs when it comes to engaging in therapy and I work with every client, family, or couple I see to tailor treatment to their specific needs and adjust accordingly.

I believe that finding a counselor that understands and connects with you is an important step in the healing process. My goal is to help you navigate through the therapy process and provide a safe and comforting therapeutic environment that fosters growth, insight and healing.

How does art therapy work?
The process of making art allows people to express themselves. Art-making can take many forms, such as painting, collage, or sculpting. The therapist asks questions that the work elicits, such as how the person felt while creating their piece, or if any memories surfaced that they can discuss. The therapist will then work with the patient to process their experience, understand themselves better, and work toward change.
Does art therapy help with trauma?
Art therapy can be a valuable treatment option for those suffering from trauma. Traumatic experiences such as combat, rape, or childhood abuse can be so painful that articulating them can be too scary or painful; creating art allows people to express themselves without words, and tell their story in a different way. The physical nature of creating art can also help people feel rooted in the body, which may benefit those who feel disconnected from their body in the aftermath of trauma.
How long does art therapy last?
The duration of art therapy varies, but a common length for treatment is 10 to 15 weekly sessions. Some people may see improvement in just a few weeks, while others may choose to remain in therapy longer term. Patients should periodically discuss their goals with their therapist to make sure the two are aligned on process and progress.
What are the limitations of art therapy?
Art therapy is helpful for many people, but a limitation is that it doesn’t have as robust an evidence base as other forms of therapy, such as cognitive behavioral therapy or acceptance and commitment therapy. The evidence on art therapy is mixed; some research demonstrates its benefits, while other research suggests that it has little impact on patients.
