If you’re navigating identity questions or a major life transition, you’re in the right place. I work with adults who feel unsure of who they are within their families, relationships, or communities—people who’ve outgrown old roles or feel disconnected from themselves. I support clients exploring adoption-related identity, early motherhood, career shifts, family-of-origin patterns, and recovery from substance use. Many of my clients describe feeling ‘in between’ versions of themselves and wanting clarity, meaning, and a stronger understanding of who they are becoming.

Hi - I'm John, and I'm glad you're here. Maybe you know the heaviness of a loss. The inner critic that won't let up. Or that anxious tightness in your chest that greets you in the morning. Here’s what I believe: You’ve already got all the inner equipment you need to move towards healing. Towards your most authentic, hot mess of an eclectic Self. My goal is to accompany you on a journey - inside. I work with adults and couples seeking healthier ways to relate to themselves and others. I work with people who have been hit by life. Who are looking for a place to feel supported and witnessed when they’re in the thick of it.

I am in network with Highmark, Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield, PEAK Health, UMR/PEIA, Aetna Commercial (excluding Aetna Better Help of WV), Tricare, and UPMC.
Living in fight, flight, or freeze? Are you spiraling, experiencing decision paralysis, self-sabotaging, shutting down, or dopamine seeking? Perhaps escapism or feeling different, has left you feeling disconnected. Yet, rejection sensitivity, demand avoidance, or feeling others aren't there enough keep you from living the life you deserve. If so, you may be living in survival. Through co-regulation, where I see your strengths, and offer a judgment-free, supportive milieu, I strive to help those experiencing insecure attachment, codependency, and survivors of SA and childhood abuse truly thrive, not survive.

Thanks for clicking! Feeling like you're not growing? Have you hit a snag or is there a barrier that is keeping you from meeting your goals? I'd love to help! I would like to help you reach the longer-lasting effects that are the consequences of an insight-based and action-oriented approach to counseling. Let's figure out what happened, how it's affecting you, and what we can do together to help you overcome it, learn from it, and grow. I find trauma work extremely rewarding. I attempt to help clients increase their awareness of their responses to trauma and get them back to meeting their needs in an independent way.

As a psychodynamic, EMDR therapist, I can help you process past experiences in a safe environment — working with you to calm the unwanted noise that so often shows up as anxiety. I can also help you address the depression that too often obscures our truest selves. Perhaps you’ve experienced a major upheaval or maybe you’re grappling with more subtle, disruptive changes to your day-to-day functioning; either way, such shifts can be destabilizing, causing us to question core beliefs and ask: Am I even on the right path? New traumas may unfold, and older ones may awaken but we still have a very real need to feel grounded.

**Teletherapy secure video sessions available** Finding a therapist can be challenging. It may feel overwhelming to take the initial steps to begin counseling and search for someone who is the right fit for your unique personality. I emphasize the importance of a positive therapeutic relationship where collaboration assists you in getting you to where you want to be. Many people have asked me how I can do such a difficult job. I see my “job” as a gift. It is truly special when people allow me to be apart of their lives and can be vulnerable with me as we walk together in the healing process, whatever that may look like for them.

I’m interested in working with clients who are in search of deep emotional, mental, and spiritual healing. You can expect our sessions together to consider your past, and to process the impact of those experiences on your present day life. Almost everyone is impacted by distressing or traumatic events that inevitably occur throughout a lifetime, so those experiences will be explored and processed, as well. Our work together will be a blended effort of focusing on what is important to you, and my curiosity and guidance throughout your process.

If you’re looking for a therapist, you're ready for something in your life to change. Are you tired of trying to figure things out on your own? Are you struggling with your important relationships? Do the people you usually turn to for guidance no longer seem to know how to help? Whatever brought you to this point, your regular ways of making yourself feel better are no longer enough to restore your peace of mind. You don’t need to deal with all of that alone.

Does insurance cover therapy, prescriptions and other behavioral health services?

In general, yes. Laws in the U.S. require insurers to cover essential behavioral health care at the same level as other health care services. Most health plans require a medical diagnosis and treatments that are evidence based and medically essential. This means that life coaching and alternative therapies are not covered, nor is therapy without a diagnosis. Call the number on the back or your insurance card or visit your insurance company's website to review your Summary of Benefits. If you have insurance through your employer, your Human Resources department may also be able to answer questions.

How much does therapy cost with insurance?

The cost of therapy depends on your region, how much training and experience your therapist has, and the type of treatment. The rate for talk therapy generally falls between $100 and $250. For a client seeing an in-network provider, the cost of therapy is often similar to the cost of other health care services. Clients pay co-pays and may need to satisfy a plan’s deductible before benefits kick in.

What is the difference between In-Network and Out-of-Network insurance coverage?

An in-network provider has contracted with an insurer to get paid directly for services, and to accept the insurer’s rate of compensation. Clients are responsible for deductibles and copays. If a therapist is out of network, that means that the client pays the therapist directly for services at the therapist’s regular fee. Out-of-Network providers often give clients a receipt so that they can file for partial reimbursement with their insurance company.

Is it difficult to find an In-Network therapist?

It is not unusual for therapists to limit the number of insurance patients in their practice, so it’s important to check in-network availability when you schedule your first appointment. In regions and times where therapy is in high demand it may take longer to get scheduled with an in-network therapist.

What is the difference between HMO and PPO insurance plans?

HMO health plans only cover in-network services, there is no reimbursement for out-of-network providers. PPO plans often cover both in- and out-of-network services, though the client may pay more for out-of-network services.

What is a Superbill?

A superbill is a receipt for therapy services. It provides all the information required by insurance companies to reimburse you for out-of-network services, including the diagnostic codes for your care, the amount paid, and the dates and duration of care.

Does insurance cover Online therapy?

Many therapists who shifted their practice to online therapy during the pandemic have kept that arrangement. And most insurers continue to cover telehealth services, with a few exceptions. Preventive care (such as an annual depression screening) is often required to be in-person to be covered, and some states require prescribers of controlled substances to see those patients in person.

Does insurance cover Group therapy?

Many insurance plans provide coverage for group therapy provided there is a medical diagnosis for group members, but there are some noteworthy exceptions. For example, Medicare does not always cover group therapy. Group therapy tends to cost less than individual therapy.

Does insurance cover Couples therapy?

Most insurance companies do not cover the cost of couples therapy because there is no medical diagnosis or medically necessary treatment. However, a few plans will offer a limited benefit, so it is still worth checking with your insurance company. Sometimes therapy is covered for a couple when one person has a diagnosis and another family member joins them for joint therapy, but it is considered therapy for the medical condition that includes a family member as a listener or helper, not couples counseling. Without insurance, most clients pay between $100-300 per 60-90 min session for couples therapy. Often clients can find classes or workshops that make it more affordable to work on their relationship. And some employers offer benefit plans that help defray the cost of couples therapy.
