If you had a magic wand, how would your life be different? Would your
child
’s anxiety, fear, and struggles vanish? Could parenting become easy and conflict-free? When your
child
or adolescent struggles with behavioral, emotional, and trauma issues, it affects the whole family and makes you feel powerless and overwhelmed. Welcome to Invictus Counseling! I work with
children
, teens, and parents to address behaviors, emotions, and trauma and develop goals to overcome those obstacles. There’s no magic wand – but there is a way to help, to nurture, and to improve.

I utilize play therapy to help
children
that have experienced emotional/behavioral issues.
Are you feeling stuck and need some guidance for growth? I won't offer band-aid solutions, only lasting and meaningful change. Therapy to me is a process of identifying and understanding who you are and where you want to go. I want to journey with you to the deeper levels of your struggles and find the light. The arrow is a powerful symbol to me that represents the growth we are capable of. In order for an arrow to aim forward, it must be pulled back with the bow to gain strength.

Some of us have suffered trauma as
children
, or even more recently, regarding divorce, abuse, or an accident.
Sometimes we feel that certain feelings we have, like anger and sadness, get sort of stuck inside of us, and are really hard to release. Maybe an issue with a family member stays unresolved for quite a long time, and so becomes a hurdle that's almost impossible to overcome, but maybe its an issue within oneself. It could be that talking it out with an impartial but caring person could help.

I believe that a keen sense of self and awareness are key elements for any
child
, adolescent or adult to lead their truest, most fulfilled life.
It is my belief that each and every person is doing the best they can with the resources they have available to them. Oftentimes an unbiased listening ear, some empathy, encouragement, and perhaps a different point of view is all you need as a parent or
child
to help you feel empowered to take the necessary steps to move forward in a healthy and joyful way. I began my career working with young kids (and their families) in Early Intervention and from there realized the importance of empowering the family system as a whole to face the challenges in our daily lives.

In working with
children
and adolescents (ages 5-18) you accept the responsibility of meeting with a population who may not have consented to therapy. Although guardians act within the
child
's best interest, the intervention may not be something the adolescent supports at the time. With this understanding, my primary goal is to simply connect regardless of who walks through that door. Progress cannot occur without a strong and trusting therapeutic relationship. To ensure this result, I rely on genuineness and transparency with the client. My extensive experience, both as a School Counselor and Therapist, lead my counseling direction

Relationships aren’t always easy, especially our most important ones. In our lives, we are constantly responding to the influences of and affecting those around us. If you and your family,
child
, or partner have been struggling to connect, you're not alone. Many of us get stuck in patterns and, although we try our best, can't find a way back to the relationships we want. In order to find our way back, I believe in tailoring therapy to fit your individual needs by pulling from various treatment approaches. I have trained in Ecosystemic Family Therapy and worked with parents/families in the residential and family-based level of care.

I don't believe that adolescents/young adults are broken and need to be fixed, they need healed. I will create an emotionally safe environment, a place where you are accepted without judgement. This is the corner stone of developing trust. This process is a personal journey, one that I am honored to be a part of. I have specialized in working with adolescents and young adults for over 28 years. This is a unique population that requires an in-depth understanding of their worlds.

When I work with a client, my hope is that the individual will experience a sense of understanding and hopefulness for change in their present situation. I believe that when an individual feels that the clinician is truly invested in "walking with" the "whole person" on their journey, the client will gain a new perspective on their movement in life. When I see individuals who are struggling with anxiety and/or depression, relational concerns, life stressors, and/or loss and transition issues, my main focus is to support the client in developing a hopefulness that positive change is possible.

Child Therapists
Do I need to attend therapy with my child?
Parents are an integral part of a child’s therapy, but the specifics of their involvement vary. If your child is young, you may attend most or all sessions; if your child is older, you may attend a few sessions or none; sometimes a therapist may ask you to have a session on your own. Whatever the arrangement, you should expect to work collaboratively with the therapist, your child, and your family members to take steps to help support your child.
How long are sessions with child therapists?
Children’s therapy sessions can last 30 minutes, 45 minutes, or 60 minutes. The length of the session may depend on your child’s age and the type of therapy practiced. You can discuss this with therapists you consult and the one you ultimately move forward with.
How do I get a child to agree to seek therapy?
The best approach is to have an open-ended conversation with your child about how they’re doing and what they might be struggling with. When you raise therapy, discuss the concept in an age-appropriate way, for example explaining that a therapist’s job is to help kids handle their hard or uncomfortable feelings. Frame therapy positively, as an opportunity to explore and build emotional skills—it’s an important tool in the toolbox to help kids feel their best.
How can I tell if a therapist is a good fit for my child?
A child needs to feel comfortable opening up about their thoughts and feelings, so if your child feels a sense of comfort, ease, and trust with their therapist, that’s a great sign. In addition, a therapist is a good fit for your child if the two can communicate well together; a clinician should be able to communicate clearly, effectively, and in an age-appropriate manner.
