I use an integrative approach tailored specifically to your child or teen ’s needs and goals, and work closely with you – the expert on your child – to achieve success for your family.
If you had a magic wand, how would your life be different? Would your child’s anxiety, fear, and struggles vanish? Could parenting become easy and conflict-free? When your child or adolescent struggles with behavioral, emotional, and trauma issues, it affects the whole family and makes you feel powerless and overwhelmed. Welcome to Invictus Counseling! I work with children, teens, and parents to address behaviors, emotions, and trauma and develop goals to overcome those obstacles. There’s no magic wand – but there is a way to help, to nurture, and to improve.

In working with children and adolescents (ages 5-18) you accept the responsibility of meeting with a population who may not have consented to therapy. Although guardians act within the child's best interest, the intervention may not be something the adolescent supports at the time. With this understanding, my primary goal is to simply connect regardless of who walks through that door. Progress cannot occur without a strong and trusting therapeutic relationship. To ensure this result, I rely on genuineness and transparency with the client. My extensive experience, both as a School Counselor and Therapist, lead my counseling direction

I believe that a keen sense of self and awareness are key elements for any child, adolescent or adult to lead their truest, most fulfilled life.
It is my belief that each and every person is doing the best they can with the resources they have available to them. Oftentimes an unbiased listening ear, some empathy, encouragement, and perhaps a different point of view is all you need as a parent or child to help you feel empowered to take the necessary steps to move forward in a healthy and joyful way. I began my career working with young kids (and their families) in Early Intervention and from there realized the importance of empowering the family system as a whole to face the challenges in our daily lives.

We have vast potential. Our growth, our goals, and our successes begin with our behavior. Reaching that next step, exploring new social situations, relationships, and challenges in our life respond to how we act. We sometimes face difficulties in our lives, and overcome personal barriers. We find difficulty in making hard choices, seeing opportunity in our day to day lives, meeting new people, and exploring new interests and stepping out of past routines. Growth can involve trying something completely new, facing something that is aversive to us, or engaging with others in ways we are not used to.

If you are tired of things as they are and need a change - it's time to take that step! Have you felt anxious, stressed, sad, lonely, misunderstood, disconnected, and overwhelmed? Have you come to find that your view of yourself and the way you experience relationships prevents you from finding happiness or meaning? Having a safe space - and taking the time to reflect is crucial. Reconsidering how you view yourself - and the way you relate to those around you - can shift your perspective. This can lead to personal enrichment and healthier boundaries in your life and relationships.

Simply stated, I believe the main goal of therapy is to help you feel and function better. I approach counseling/therapy as a collaboration between you and me. It is an active process. (I won't just sit, passively listening to you talk, for 45 minutes, occasionally nodding my head.) We will decide what the issues are, formulate effective strategies to make necessary changes in thoughts and behaviors (including learning new skills if necessary), and work together to implement successfully those strategies. I will (with your input) tailor the therapeutic process to best fit your needs.

Anxiety and stress affect everyone. Whatever the cause- relationships, school, work, medical issues, existential/spiritual crisis, loss of any kind- it can be overwhelming. Important obligations and events might be avoided, communication and connection compromised. Self-esteem, sleep, energy level, and mood all may suffer. We will collaborate to address the challenging areas of your life, manage stresses from your environment and body, and develop strategies to overcome unhelpful patterns of thought and behavior. Through this work it will be possible to experience relief, become happier, and evolve as a person.

In therapy, I try to understand and accept each person. That builds the client's self-esteem. Then I work together with the client to find the unique solution to his or her trouble, whether it's depression, or anxiety, or relationship problems. Different people need different kinds of help, so I don't limit myself to one kind of therapy. I'm trained in several, so the client and I pick the methods we think will help him or her the most. The relationship is one of mutual respect moving forward to overcome an obstacle to the client's happiness.

I don't believe that adolescents/young adults are broken and need to be fixed, they need healed. I will create an emotionally safe environment, a place where you are accepted without judgement. This is the corner stone of developing trust. This process is a personal journey, one that I am honored to be a part of. I have specialized in working with adolescents and young adults for over 28 years. This is a unique population that requires an in-depth understanding of their worlds.

Teen Therapists

What does therapy for teenagers look like?

When a therapist works with a teenager, the pair will talk about what the teen is struggling with and explore solutions, which may involve interpersonal skills, coping strategies, medication, or lifestyle changes related to sleep, diet, and exercise. Different therapists employ different modalities, but most involve a combination of conversation and skill building.

How long does therapy for teenagers generally take to work?

There’s variability in teenagers’ experiences and challenges; some may begin to improve from therapy within a few weeks while others may take several months or longer. Teens can discuss their progress with their therapist periodically to assess how they’re improving and any changes to the treatment plan that could potentially accelerate that progress.

How do you encourage a teenager to go to therapy?

It’s helpful to express your concern and love while framing therapy as an opportunity to explore a tool that could help improve their life; just like they practice baseball or dance, now they can practice their emotional skills. Give your teen control over the process where you can—maybe by weighing in on choice of therapist and signaling that therapy involves confidentiality, so a parent need not know all that is discussed in sessions.

How do you prepare teens for therapy?

You can prepare your teenager for therapy by describing what the process will look like and setting expectations for timeline, if requested. You can explain that the first session may begin with an assessment phase, that they can describe their experiences but that the therapist will ask questions too, and that it may take time to feel comfortable opening up. Ask how they’re feeling about the process and answer any questions calmly and supportively.
