It may feel overwhelming to reach out for help and to trust someone else with your thoughts and feelings, not to mention your past experiences and hopes and dreams for the future. I understand how challenging it can be to figure out who you are, where you want to go, and how to get there - and how difficult it is to start taking those initial steps toward self-discovery. I believe that the journey is more important than the destination since goals tend to be redefined through the learning that occurs in therapy.

All treatment is trauma focused , skills and relationship based so that you not only solve your current problems, but also learn skills that will assist you throughout your lifetime.
I specialize in therapy care for children, teens and young adults and families. Parents are included as part of the therapy process from start to finish. Individuals and couples are also seen using a relational lens. Issues you may want to focus on are building cooperation and fostering openness instead of hostility and defiance; growing self esteem and confidence instead of fearfulness, clinging and sadness; increasing tolerance and self control instead of tantrums and aggression. Our work will heal family patterns of discord, hurt and division and will help children along their journey of becoming a confident, well rounded individual.

I greatly enjoy utilizing a range of therapeutic interventions, such as Trauma Focused CBT, solution focused therapy, reality therapy and many others.
I began my career in the Human Services field over 22 years ago as a contracted social worker under the Department of Human Services, working with families, couples, and individuals including teenagers and emerging adults in Treatment Foster Care and Juvenile Probation system. It is through these programs that I enhanced my knowledge and skills as a counselor providing emotional assistance to those that struggle with barriers and challenges in life. I have learned just how impactful past and present traumatic experiences affect and shape the individual.

My experience working with LGBTQ people and clients of various backgrounds in mental health settings has shown me that personal change occurs best through relationships based on trust, and a common purpose. Relationships where you are encouraged to say what’s on your mind, be challenged, take risks, and gain new insights. In our sessions, I will focus on honoring your autonomy as we work towards your goals for therapy. My intention is not to teach you a “correct way to live" but instead to learn what already works for you and help create a space to explore yourself further leading to new possibilities for your life.

With 25 years of experience in behavior health services, I can create a compassionate and supportive environment to begin working with parts of you that have become stuck by using effective, trauma focused , and evidence based treatments such as EMDR therapy, internal family systems, motivational interviewing, and cognitive behavior therapy.
Many of us become stuck at different stages in our lives for myriad reasons. Its possible you may or may not be aware of what events may have led to this which can manifest in mental health and/or substance use difficulties. Examples may range from traumatic events such as abuse, neglect, death of loved ones; oft under emphasized circumstances such as daily stress, breakups, loss of employment; or broader systemic issues such as racism, poverty, and other types of discrimination. If you are looking to identify causes and solutions to help all parts of you move forward, this is a good place to start.

I have extensive training in cognitive-behavioral techniques, Trauma Focused -CBT, Brief Solution Focus Therapy, and psychodynamic therapy.
On your way to realizing your highest potential, life can become complex and land some powerful punches that can knock you on your ass. As a therapist, I am not immune to anger, grief, or worry, and I carry no special protection against tragedy. But one of the main reasons I chose to be a psychotherapist, outside of my passion for helping people, was to examine and investigate my psychological issues, vulnerabilities, and pain. And I believe everyone can benefit from a neutral, supportive third party.

Trauma can turn your life upside down. It can lead to nightmares and flashbacks, depression and anxiety, intrusive memories, guilt, and shame. These experiences are common after a traumatic experience and often get better over time, but when they stick around, we call it PTSD. And it can be awful to live with. The good news is that those symptoms don't have to last forever. Treatment for PTSD can be fast (only 2-3 months) and effective, and for those that get treatment, it will be life-changing. Many who complete trauma-focused treatment will no longer qualify for a diagnosis of PTSD after completing treatment.

Everyone faces some bumps on the road of life. Often times it is helpful to have someone besides friends or family to help fix the pot holes or navigate a new road. One of my strengths is creating a safe space through a non-judgmental attitude, being open minded, using humor, and basically keeping it real. By blending a focus on present day problems and any childhood issues we will work towards the goals you want to accomplish. Together we will focus on you making healthier choices, improving mood and self-esteem, and creating a better life balance.

I work well with teens and young adults who experience anxiety, depression, disordered eating and self-harm behaviors. I take a Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), person-centered, trauma informed approach within a social justice frame to support clients in blending the creative and practical so that clients enjoy the process of exploration and can see results in their mood and behaviors.

I believe one of the bravest things we can do is to understand our story. Owning our story can bring us to self-acceptance and healing. I can help get you there. Do you feel like you’re hitting a wall? Feeling stuck in unhealthy patterns? Stuck in your past trauma? Bad relationships? You deserve more than the anger and hurt that you’re carrying with you each day. These walls you’re hitting can be broken down. We just need to take a few steps back, and face these walls together. Come in, and enjoy a cup of coffee or tea (on me) and let’s talk about it.

How can I find a therapist in Philadelphia?

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.

Learn more about how to find a therapist.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

What type of therapist is right for me?

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors. Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.
