I have specialty training in treating insomnia /difficulty sleeping (CBT-I).
A compassionate and trauma-informed mental health professional dedicated to helping people achieve their goals and to find personal and professional success. I'm constantly inspired by the change and growth of my clients. We are capable of so much more than we know. Therapy is wonderful, challenging, transformative, scary and very worth it. Together we will work on those things that have been brushed under the rug or put off until now. This work isn't easy but the alternative of: staying stuck, not living your best life, and spending years feeling down, anxious, and overwhelmed is far more challenging.

Having worked with many veterans at the VA Medical Center, I also have special interests in trauma and sleep difficulties (CBT-I and IRT).
I believe therapy is most helpful in an atmosphere of acceptance and respect. In a safe and collaborative environment, we can work together toward your personal goals. I am passionate about helping my clients cope with life stressors, to get relief from painful emotional symptoms, and to feel understood. Beginning therapy is not easy. My approach to therapy begins with helping clients to define their goals and to empower them to move toward the most fulfilling life possible.

I've helped many people with depression, anxiety/worry/stress, addiction, couples issues, self-esteem, weight, sleep , and anger issues.
I will work with you to capitalize on your strengths and help you identify and move beyond unhelpful mental and behavioral patterns lurking in your blind spots. Rather than talk endlessly about your problems, we will instead use various empirically supported techniques to step back from your problems and explore new behavioral and belief options that better correspond to your key goals and values. Then you'll practice these new perspectives and strategies at home in your real life until they feel more natural. **Please phone me first as I do not always have daily email access.

We move through institutions of power our entire lives. First, family, then we form friends at school, fall in love in college, maybe grow close to others in religious communities. Along the way, we encounter experiences that enable us to become more of our authentic selves. Sometimes, these experiences are less than ideal, other times, these experiences are more traumatizing than we originally thought. Depression, anxiety, insomnia , are a few things that manifest and these are the PTSD-related symptoms that I specialize in.

Life is sometimes overwhelmingly heavy. The seemingly random moments of increased heart rate and shortness of breath. The feeling of drowning (and sometimes floating) that fogs your mind. The inability to make a clear decision - or to just get through things in a rush because you can’t think clearly anyway. The having to backtrack because “Wait..what just happened?” The lack of appetite and sleepless nights. The increased appetite and the deepest sleep after the tears. How much would you treasure having a clear mind again?

I love my approach to brain wave training with neurofeedback. It is broadly effective at producing substantial results in your life that are enduring. Most often I see people with anxiety, depression, insomnia , ADHD, migraine, PTSD, addictions, bipolar and autism. I believe that most people with psychological issues have brain wave activity that is either over-aroused or under-aroused. That is, either too much or too little brain wave activity in either the fast or slow frequencies. Mental problems are a timing issue in the brain. These timing issues can be corrected by practicing a better way to function.

Sleep or Insomnia Therapists

How effective is treatment for insomnia?

The most effective treatments for insomnia are behavioral techniques that reduce anxiety, including anxiety about falling asleep, and allow the body’s natural cycles to be recalibrated. The most common treatment is cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I), which researchers have found to be more useful than medication, with rates of success as high as 80 percent.

Are there specific medications for sleep problems?

There are many medications, both over-the-counter and prescription that treat sleep problems. Supplements such as melatonin are popular and may help, though there is little evidence that it is more effective than a placebo. Prescription medications such as zolpidem are sometimes prescribed.

Are there natural treatments for sleep problems?

There are many natural treatments for everyday sleep problems. Reducing blue-light emitting screens, setting a regular bedtime, regular exercise, reducing caffeine and nicotine consumption, and keeping the bedroom dark and cool at night are all lifestyle changes that can help those who struggle with sleep but may not reach the level of an insomnia diagnosis.

What’s the difference between having trouble falling asleep and insomnia?

Life events, stress, and anxiety can lead to sleepless nights for everyone from time to time. To be diagnosed with insomnia, a patient must experience trouble falling asleep, trouble remaining asleep, waking up too early, or non-restorative sleep at least three nights per week for at least one month. Sleep problems affect one-third to one-half of the population, while chronic insomnia affects about 10 to 15 percent of people.
