I work well with teens and adults who experience anxiety, depression, disordered eating, suicidal and self-harm behaviors. I take a Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), person-centered, and trauma informed approach to support clients. I have a passion for working with individuals who are exploring their identity and hold a safe and supportive space for LGBTQ+ affirming counseling. I also like to use humor and irreverence so that clients enjoy the process of exploration and can see results in their mood and behaviors.

I am a licensed professional counselor with experience working with individuals to help them with depression, anxiety, trauma, addiction, relationships, and interpersonal issues across their life. I mainly work with individuals, one-on-one, but have worked with couples and families, and troubled populations like youth on probation. My goal is to help individuals find a balance in their life where they are able to reduce their mental health stress/impact, and their overall life stress, by establishing and implementing healthy balance, coping skills, and boundaries in their life to improve not only their life, but their sense of self.

Welcome! I would like you to know that you are here on purpose and the first step is that you acknowledged that things haven't been "OK". If you are an adult surviving life’s most difficult challenges from your traumatic experiences, to stress, unhappiness, life transitions, self-doubt or you’re losing your way - I’ve had you in mind and created a space for you. My hope is that you’ll take the time to connect with me and allow me to help you overcome those obstacles. You’ll have the tools to face the world - anything that prevents you from being the best version of yourself.

Making sense of your anxieties, fears or depression can feel overwhelming. We all have the need to be connected and challenged so that we can grow into our best self. I believe that therapy should be hard but rewarding work that can be translated into actionable behavior outside of treatment. The cornerstone of making change is finding a therapist who promotes a sense of safety, compassion and respect to allow your true self to emerge and thrive. I have 20 years of clinical practice experience in New York City and Philadelphia and value working with diverse individuals and families.

My therapeutic "approach" isn't a curated persona, it's a belief that authentic engagement and prioritization of a strong relationship between myself and my client is the key to effective therapy. I show up to sessions as both a therapist and a real human with a personality that is warm, friendly, curious, direct and honest. I don't believe in TMI, and I want to hear every detail of every story you want to share.

Even if you've done this before, it's not always an easy decision to find a therapist. I appreciate that you're taking this step toward finding someone you feel might be a good fit. Therapy is most successful when a person feels some connection with their therapist. I take a down-to-earth, supportive, conversational approach that, especially at first, helps sessions feel comfortable and allows some time for us to get to know each other. I believe how we see ourselves is rooted in our history and that it can be powerful to identify ways we learned to think about ourselves and others.

Self-Harming Therapists
How does therapy for self-harm work?
A person may turn to self-injury so that they can distract themselves from their stress, depression, anxiety, or upsetting circumstances. Therapy can address the cause of an individual’s suffering. A therapist can help a person understand why they may want to self-harm and help the person learn new methods of coping. A person may have poor emotion regulation, and treatment such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is helpful for breaking this behaviour. In addition, treatment such as dialectical behavior therapy can help a person manage their tolerance of distress.

Which therapies are best for self-harm?
Specific approaches used by professionals include cognitive behavioral, dialectical behavior, psychodynamic, and mentalisation-based therapies, among others. Cognitive behavioral and dialectical behavior therapies are common approaches for people who have painful thoughts and past traumas. These therapies help an individual cope with distress, regulate emotions, and manage impulsive urges.

Does the tendency to self-harm mean the person is suicidal?
Having this urge does not mean the individual suffers from suicidal ideation. People who want to self-injure look to distract or alleviate themselves from the pain they are experiencing. People with suicidal tendencies want to end life altogether. However, this does not mean a person with the intent to self-harm will not attempt suicide.

How often and how long are therapy sessions for self-harm?
As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual. Clients may see improvement within 20 sessions, at an average of 50 minutes per session, while others may opt for 20 to 30 sessions over, maybe, a six-month period. People, especially those with co-occurring conditions like depression and anxiety, may need to continue therapy for up to 12 to 18 months.
