My areas of clinical focus include: LGBTQ affirming therapy and questions of identity; low self esteem (struggling with negative self-talk, never feeling good enough); relationship issues and communication (not secure in your relationships, difficulty communicating your thoughts); negative relationships with food and the body (HAES); anxiety, and depression.
Life is constantly presenting us with obstacles to overcome, and my goal as a clinician is to provide a safe space for you to grow and feel supported as you navigate those challenges. My work with patients is characterized by mutual decision making, trust, respect, and humor. When working with me, you can expect that I will take your feelings and concerns seriously, that I will listen attentively, but also challenge you to see things from a new perspective. I am drawn to working with people who are curious, self-reflective, and seeking a deeper understanding of themselves and their relationships.

I view the psychotherapy process as a collaboration, where the two of us are working together to make sense of the obstacles interfering with your emotional well-being. My treatment approach is psychodynamic and relational. I find that closely attending to shifts in the therapeutic relationship - in a safe and empathic manner - can be powerful in unlocking painful patterns and enhancing personal strengths. My aim is to help you gain a fuller understanding of yourself and, in turn, more freedom of choice so you can live a more meaningful life, with greater comfort.

I am an empathetic therapist who listens deeply and asks questions to help you work through your concerns. I strive to help you gain insights, feel heard, and set goals and steps for change. My approach includes evidence-based techniques that target how you think (cognitive-behavioral therapy), build on your strengths and values (client-centered/humanistic therapy), and examine how your past experiences and relationships impact your current patterns and concerns (psychodynamic therapy). I also use art therapy and mindfulness activities when appropriate.

The desire to know and to be known is a normal human experience. I value the trauma-informed safety and client-centered connection we collaboratively create through a systematic lens. I am particularly sensitive to diversity in culture and self-identity, including with respect to race, gender and sexuality. I believe the importance of affirming the unique individual experience with cultural humility. Through compassion, sensitivity, and empowerment, we will work together respectfully to acknowledge vulnerability, unearth patterns, attend complexity, and gain ownership change to achieve the most authentic and expansive self.

I have a lot of experience with working with clients with anxiety, depression, and self-esteem challenges. Also, I have experience working with first responders and addictions. Teaching coping skills and helping clients to utilize their strengths is important to me because it allows individuals to feel empowered and competent. The goal is not to rely on me, but to learn to trust themselves and utilize new skills to manage their symptoms. It is very important to me to give space for persons of color to feel comfortable in exploring issues of race and issues specific to being a person of color.

ACCEPTING NEW CLIENTS! Hi! I'm Courtney and I have a special interest in working with young people dealing with issues of self-esteem/self-worth, recovering from the effects of unhealthy/abusive relationships, navigating adult relationships, and those dealing with major life transitions. Life comes with many challenges and it is normal to feel unsure of how to navigate these challenges. I believe that by improving our personal relationships, as well as understanding recurring themes in our lives, we can develop a better understanding, acceptance, respect, compassion, and love for ourselves and future relationships.

Finding the right therapist can be intimidating. My goal is to make the therapy process welcoming and transparent. I work particularly well with people who've been told they are "too sensitive" or who identify as Highly Sensitive People. My talent lies in treating anxiety, trauma and attachment/relationship wounds, as well as self-esteem. I support those who care for their communities: healers, caregivers, artists or those with creative practices, and activists. I've worked with ages 3-90 across class, race, gender, sexual orientation, & health status. Together, we can explore hard topics with sensitivity and humor.

Self Esteem Therapists

When should a person seek therapy for low self-esteem?

When self-esteem problems begin to disrupt the healthy daily functioning of an individual, it may be a good time to look into therapy. If a person finds that they are not engaging with friends for fear of being judged, not completing work assignments because they don’t think they’re capable, or not finding romantic love because they don’t feel they’re worthy of it, a therapist may be able to help.

What are the signs of low self-esteem?

Low self-esteem is a common issue that can affect a person's mental and emotional well-being. Some common signs of low self-esteem include negative self-talk, perfectionism, social anxiety, difficulty making decisions, an inability to set boundaries, people-pleasing, and others. A lack of belief in oneself or one’s abilities and a feeling of not being worthy or deserving underlie most of these characteristics.

What causes low self-esteem?

Feelings of low self-worth can begin in childhood or adulthood. Being raised by a highly critical parent or growing up feeling constant disapproval can stay with a person well into adulthood. Specific issues in adulthood may also be a cause of low self-esteem. An unhappy relationship, a dysfunctional work or school experience can impact a person’s feelings of self-worth.

How can therapy improve self-esteem?

Therapists can help identify negative thought patterns that keep the client stuck in a loop of destructive self-talk and develop coping skills to change the voice in their head. A therapist can help with goal-setting, so that clients are better able to stay on task and build confidence from successfully completing work they’re proud of. Coaching a client on how to better communicate can improve relationships. These skills can result in someone with low self-esteem feeling empowered and living with less fear.
