Pregnancy, Prenatal, Postpartum Therapists in Philadelphia, PA
I work with adults coping with life transitions, anxiety, the complexities of family and romantic relationships, and the challenges of pregnancy and the post-partum period.
The narratives we use to understand our lives- who we are, what we're capable of, what has happened to us- can be immensely powerful. Do you feel stuck in yours? Do you need help thinking of your life in a new way? I will work to create an open space where you can better understand who you are and what you need. Cognitive behavior therapy can help you examine the core beliefs that organize your experience and complicate, interrogate, or rewrite them.

There is space for clients to explore, get curious about themselves, and identify their own desired areas of growth. My interests include: career and academic confusion and dissatisfaction, intergenerational family conflict, trauma, postpartum depression and anxiety, adult children of parents with substance abuse and mental health issues, women in transitional stages of life ( pregnancy, motherhood, "empty-nest" and retirement, divorce, widowhood).
I am trained in object relations theory, but my experience as a high school counselor, family therapist and lawyer informs my flexible and practical approach. While offering a deep therapy experience that leads to enduring change and growth, I am mindful that patients need strategies to manage immediate concerns and feel relief during the change process. I approach patients with a belief that their early experiences and attachments have shaped the way they see themselves, how they approach relationships and what they expect from life. I seek to help patients develop new ways of relating that lead to healthier connections to others and increased autonomy.

I specialize in the field of perinatal mental health.
We all have running narratives about who we are in this world. We use certain words to describe ourselves, like “I’m too sensitive.” “I’m an anxious person.” “I’m not good enough.” While these stories are based on real experiences, they can also hold power over our self-esteem, our decision-making, and our relationships. In therapy, we will work to understand yourself and the world around you in new ways that feel more accepting, empowering and expansive.

Pregnancy, Prenatal, Postpartum Therapists
What are the most effective ways to address pregnancy, prenatal, and postpartum concerns?
The most effective way to address pregnancy, prenatal, and postpartum concerns is by finding a therapist who has prior experience helping other patients overcome the challenge being faced. For example, a marriage and family therapist may have experience helping couples adjust to their new relationship dynamic. An anxiety specialist may have experience helping with phobias or illness anxiety related to the child’s health. A depression specialist may have experience treating postpartum depression.
When should I seek treatment for prenatal or postpartum concerns?
Pregnancy and the postpartum period involve intense physical and mental changes; a degree of upset and instability is normal. However, if these changes impair daily functioning, it may be time to seek help. This distinction is pertinent for postpartum depression: A period of teariness, irritability, and distress is difficult but normal in the one to two weeks after childbirth (sometimes called the “baby blues.”) But if feelings of sadness and hopelessness persist beyond that period, the person should seek treatment.
How do I manage worries during pregnancy or the postnatal period?
A therapist can help patients develop the tools they need to manage anxieties during or after pregnancy. Cognitive behavioral therapy can help people identify and reframe harmful patterns of thought, and change their behaviors. Other techniques and skills can allow people to develop acceptance, psychological flexibility, self-compassion, communication skills, and more.
Are there specific medications for postpartum depression?
In 2019, the FDA approved the first medication designed to treat postpartum depression. The medication is called brexanolone and is delivered intravenously by a medical professional over the course of a few days. However, typical antidepressants, which are more accessible, can also treat postpartum depression. The disorder is often best treated through a combination of medication and therapy.
