Many of us experience times of uncertainty. The challenges we confront may seem overwhelming, but we don't have to face them alone. There is very little that happens to us in life from which we cannot recover and rebuild. Therapy is one way to do so. Therapy involves a special conversation from which new possibilities emerge. From living and listening to people over the years I have discovered that our sufferings initially seem like unwelcomed guests but also invite us to the doorstep of love, humility and healing.

I use an integrative approach, with an emphasis on
emotionally focused
therapy, as well as narrative and experiential therapy.
It is my dream and job to help to create a space where you feel accepted, understood, and powerful in making changes in your life. Therapy can be a place to feel empowered by understanding ourselves, relationships, and how our bodies respond to trauma. I am going to help you celebrate your victories, laugh along with your jokes, and hold space for what causes you pain. We are seldom taught what it takes to get better, how to work through trauma rather than just deal with it, or even what the first step is to healing ourselves. Let this be the space and chance to take that first step, I want to be there for every step along the path.

You're a successful person, yet you feel like there is something missing. You're in a holding pattern of conflict and negativity with yourself and others. What you really want is the sense of calmness that comes with confidence. Instead, you're constantly frustrated and exhausted. You are ready for a transformation! Together, we can work to break negative cycles, find the skills to express, and take control back of your life! Or, maybe you're here for your child or teen? You see them struggling. They can't find the words to express to you their pain, but you see it in their behaviors. Both of you feel stuck. Gain direction with us!

In my current practice, I take a relational, client-centered approach to individual therapy, while remaining eclectic and drawing from CBT, DBT, Emotionally-Focused Therapy (
EFT
) and Attachment Theory.
Hi, I'm Derik Moore, LCSW. I worked as an outpatient psychotherapist and clinical supervisor for 10 years in the community mental health realm prior to establishing my own practice. I began my career working with those living with HIV as an activist in the mid-1990s in Newark and New Brunswick, NJ, where I engaged in street outreach and advocated for a harm reduction approach. This work informed my commitment to public health and to exploring how economic and sociological factors can play significant roles in the ways we move through the world.

As a licensed and skilled family therapist, I offer services to individuals, couples, teens, children, and families. Based on my education, training, and life experiences I believe that the individual can be better understood through the context of their relationships (family, romantic, etc.). I believe it is more important to understand the meaning of emotions, versus whether they are right or wrong to feel.

Licensed in both PA and DE, my approach is integrative, intersectional, developmental, and contextual with a belief in the value of connection and the power of possibility. I understand that we are heavily shaped by our relationships, family experiences, and positionality in the world with regard to race, culture, class, gender identity, sexuality, etc. My practice is relationship and sexual intimacy focused, and I've deepened my lens to include training in the Developmental Model of Couples Therapy, in addition to past experience with Psychobiological Approach to Couples Therapy,

I provide person-centered,

therapy, with a trauma-informed approach.
Capitalism causes burn-out, guilt, and exhaustion. It alienates us from ourselves, from one another, and from what makes us feel creative, productive, and respected. I like to tell clients that I'm a "slow" therapist. There is no need to rush when it comes to healing, and I will walk alongside you in your journey. I typically see clients who are struggling with depression, anxiety, difficult life transitions (including recent chronic illness diagnoses), self-esteem, or communication issues in relationships.

Emotionally Focused Therapists
Who is emotionally focused therapy for?
Emotionally focused therapy (EFT) is for couples who are emotionally distressed, stuck in an unsatisfying relationship pattern or feeling deeply alienated. They may even believe the relationship is beyond repair. Very often, the partners display intense anger, fear, grief, loss of trust, or a sense of betrayal in the relationship. In addition, EFT is helpful to couples and individuals who have difficulty expressing emotions and those who have trouble regulating emotions.
Why do people need emotionally focused therapy?
People need emotionally focused therapy because the need for others is built into the brain, but the pressures of daily life can erode feelings of love, and couples often do not have the skills to find their way back to the comfort of each other. Instead, they may be stuck in repetitive patterns of anger, fear, grief, loss of trust, or a sense of betrayal. Emotionally focused therapy regards such strong negative feelings as expressions of protest over the loss of connection and turns them into pathways of reconnection.
What happens in emotionally focused therapy?
Over the course of eight to 20 weekly sessions, couples de-escalate their negative emotional reactivity to one another so that they can listen to each other and be responsive to each other’s needs. Then the deep emotional and physical bond is restored, giving partners a sense of comfort and security, which they can use to solve whatever problems come their way. The therapist plays an active role, helping partners understand how anger and withdrawal are actually misguided cries for connection.
What problems does emotionally focused therapy treat?
EFT is designed to help couples stuck in dysfunctional relationship patterns regain closeness and rebuild their relationship. Typically, such couples experience considerable distress, with partners feeling alienated and distrustful of one another, not certain their relationship can survive. EFT is also helpful to individuals experiencing attachment-related fears of loss; it helps them learn to use their fears as a way of eliciting the closeness they desire.
