EMDR Therapists in Philadelphia, PA

These range from psychodynamic to solution focused therapies, as well as EMDR, mindfulness, cognitive therapy, narrative therapy, and gestalt and existential techniques.
I believe that we all struggle with trauma, and most mental health challenges stem from how one adapts to these experiences. I specialize in working with trauma, identifying how it is held in the body, the strategies we uphold as defense mechanisms, and how to negotiate with our inner self to move toward a healthy healing of mind and body. Coming from either a top down approach for those thinker types, or a bottom up approach for those feeler types, we will compassionately reconnect the mind and body, in order to achieve relief and greater connectivity to self and others.

I use an integrated approach including Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) informed, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), and EMDR to treat trauma, PTSD, bipolar disorder, BDP, depression, and anxiety.
Deciding to start therapy can be a challenging and vulnerable process. My goal as a therapist is to make each individual feel as safe and supported as possible with high levels of empathy, compassion, and genuineness. Throughout the therapy process, I value the importance of improving relationships, managing stress, and increasing the ability to identify and regulate emotions. In sessions, I emphasis the importance of processing core beliefs we hold towards ourself and the world, practicing daily mindfulness, and learning skills to effectively regulate our emotions. I also provide supervision for pre-licensed clinicians!

I am trained in Mindfulness-Based Parenting; an evidence based practice, am an EMDR therapist, as well as a Certified Grief Informed Practitioner.
I am currently building a thriving practice of couples and families that are seeking relief and understanding. The work I am doing is centered around finding belonging and safety in the spaces and relationships we occupy. The couples I work with are navigating life transitions, evaluating the state of and investment in their relationship, or are considering moving toward mutual separation and transition to a co-parenting relationship. With families my work has involved improving communication within families separated by physical distance, generational healing, and increasing connection following loss.

EMDR and art making techniques are used for radical self expression, to update clients' survival brain "software" and complete neural network integration.
Hi, I'm Alex. I work with clients who experience disconnection, shame, and guilt. Growing up, if we missed out on empathy, emotional validation, encouragement, or secure connection, we may be saddled with the belief that we are "not worthy", or "never good enough". We may struggle to accept our authentic self and struggle to find purpose. To feel confident and connected in relationships we need to keep showing up where we are fully seen and loved. I help clients work towards peace in their lives and oneness with themselves. I encourage clients to honor what once served them while letting go of what no longer serves them.

I have expertise in trauma work, certified in EMDR (Eye Movement, Desensitization and Reprocessing).
There are those times in our lives when our discomfort with ourselves or others, just becomes too uncomfortable and you need to take an action that would solve the problem once and for all. Psychotherapy is that action. Confiding in someone who is respectful and competent, in that they can clarify your issues, right from the first session, can make your stress, no matter how high the stress, seem solvable. I am that therapist.
Once clarity is reached, understanding and solving problems follow. Individual, couple or full family issues are addressed.

Y'all, there's no doubt about it - being human is hard sometimes. You may find yourself exhausted by life and frequently have a nagging feeling that something is wrong with you and/or your life. In quiet moments, there is a deep sense of unease inside that you're not sure what to do with and you try to just keep going with the hope that something will shift. You've been through a lot and you've survived. But you're tired of surviving, and the idea of actually thriving in your life and relationships sounds glorious but elusive.

I utilize cognitive behavioral therapy, exposure response prevention, parts work, EMDR, and mindfulness to help my clients develop healthy boundaries, regulate their nervous system, cultivate self-compassion and self-acceptance.
From an early age, I knew I wanted to be a therapist growing up with an emotionally immature mother who struggled with addiction. I learned to distinguish between her issues and my own, but despite this awareness, I couldn't escape internalizing her insecurities. In my early teens, I went to my first therapist for depression. I will always remember the jar of cheerios on his desk labeled “Bagel Seeds!” Therapy helped me navigate various life transitions such as coming out in adulthood and the sudden loss of my father. I deeply and personally believe in the power of therapy to change lives.

EMDR Therapists
Who is EMDR for?
EMDR was initially developed as a treatment for individuals with Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), for whom memories of a deeply distressing experience can be inadvertently triggered by random everyday events. The procedure has since been applied in the treatment of many other conditions. For example, it is used by some therapists to treat anxiety disorders including panic and phobias, depression, dissociative disorders, eating disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorders, and some personality disorders. It is suitable for adolescents and adults.
Why do people need EMDR?
People need EMDR as a way to manage distressing memories that in some way hamper the ability to function in the present. The procedure is believed to target the way memories are stored in the brain. Evidence indicates that past disturbing experiences cause ongoing distress because they were not adequately processed, and when such memories are triggered in the present, they are accompanied by all the emotions, thoughts, and physical sensations as the initial experience.
What problems does EMDR treat?
First and foremost, EMDR is intended as a treatment for PTSD, to defuse distressing memories that intrude on and impair everyday functioning. It is also often used to help those who are subject to panic attacks, phobias, and other forms of anxiety. In addition, EMDR has been used to treat individuals with depression, eating disorders, and personality disorders.
What happens in EMDR therapy?
First the therapist takes an individual’s history, and then the therapist and client decide which distressing experience(s) will be the target(s) of the exercise, delivered via a side-to-side visual stimulus requiring lateral eye movements. The client will be asked to activate thoughts, feelings, and any body sensations related to the troubling experience. The eye movements are said to reduce the emotional charge of the memory, so that the experience can then be safely discussed with the therapist and digested, minimizing its ability to trigger anxiety.
