I feel uniquely qualified to work with individuals who have experienced domestic violence , sexual abuse and emotional abuse .
My ideal client is someone who is entering therapy with the realization that they desire to be seen and heard; a person who sees therapy as a relationship to be built with a person they can be open with. I find an interest and willingness to identify and work through trauma is a common thread among those I work well with, particularly when it manifests as addiction or BPD. Beyond trauma associated with combat, violence , or sexual abuse , I feel trauma among members of LGBT and other marginalized communities, as well as people who have struggled with the surviving pandemic, is important to see and address.

I am trained in EMDR, a highly-effective treatment for the lasting effects of traumatic experience, such as emotional, physical, and/or sexual abuse , crime victimization, relational trauma, and much more.
I believe that we all possess an internal wisdom about what we need to overcome challenges. Difficult life experiences and learned behaviors sometimes cloud our ability to access this wisdom. Therapy with me begins with establishing a safe and trusting relationship which becomes the context in which we can explore and modify those parts of your experience that interfere with optimal functioning and which block your ability to feel deeply satisfied with your life.

Using gestalt therapy and the "Self as Therapist", I work with clients around depression, anxiety, gender identity, abuse /trauma, grief, and relationship issues.
We all have points in our lives when outside support helps us move through difficult times, grief, stuckness, and transitions. I will commit to your healing and help you understand your family history and relationships better. Together we connect with your core self and strengths to support the life you really want to live. I am a white, cis-gender queer therapist. I believe our identities and social locations matter in the therapy relationship (race, class, ability, culture, etc.) and in your healing. I believe we all need to heal from white supremacy and support this in our work.

My specialty is attachment-related trauma, aka betrayal, narcissistic abuse , generational family trauma, high conflict co-parenting and parental alienation.
To those that do not feel their life is a true reflection of who they are: you are my people. This is due to my personal belief that we are born as our true selves, but life does not usually roll out any red carpets for that version of us. It takes some serious work to learn how to undo all those patterns we learned to survive, but I lighten the mood with my fabulous wit so you can visit the darkness without feeling enveloped in it. I find that most can process their lives themselves, but what they need is the space to do it and the insight (aka psychoeducation) to see why their survival patterns are no longer serving them.

My previous clinical work includes working with children and youth who have experienced a homicide in their family, adult survivors of child abuse , recently abused children, LBTQ+ individuals, family therapy for DCFS Youth in Care, sex addiction and paraphilic disorder treatment, substance use treatment, and survivors of sexual and domestic violence .
Chronic substance use, problematic relationships, compulsive sexual behavior and social isolation serve a purpose – an attempt to feel safe and connected. Despite the comfort these behaviors serve, they result in continued problems and disconnection. We’re left stuck between the strong need for companionship and the tremendous fear of emotional harm in relationships. The goal of my treatment is to identify the function of these behaviors, conceptualize safety in relation to others and find solace and community with those around you.

Domestic Abuse Therapists

What are the most effective ways to recover from domestic abuse?

Leaving an abusive relationship requires tremendous courage, so survivors in treatment should recognize that they have already completed the most important step. Still, the trauma of physical or emotional abuse can be difficult to process and overcome. Therapy can help survivors process trauma, grief, and difficult emotions, treat relevant mental health symptoms, and create a new framework for boundaries and relationships in the future. For some, support groups can also be an invaluable outlet for healing.

When should an individual seek help for domestic abuse?

Victims of intimate partner violence should seek help immediately. It can take substantial time, planning, energy, and courage to leave an abusive relationship, but starting the process—by seeking therapy, calling the domestic violence hotline, or simply confiding in a loved one—will help them get there. Those who have left abusive relationships but haven’t sought treatment can also greatly benefit from therapy to process and heal from the experience.

What are the consequences of staying in an abusive relationship?

Remaining in an abusive relationship has serious repercussions. In addition to the ongoing threat of physical danger and emotional abuse, research shows that intimate partner violence is associated with a range of mental health disorders including depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety, and substance abuse. Therefore it’s important for individuals in an abusive relationship to seek help as soon as possible.

How can you get domestic abuse treatment for someone else?

It can be very complicated to identify and leave an abusive relationship; barriers include the threat of violence, financial instability, and family pressures. Those concerned about a loved one in an abusive relationship should talk to them about the situation, provide them with resources such as the domestic violence hotline, and introduce the idea of seeing a therapist due to their concern for the person’s safety and well-being.
