People often seek therapy to resolve past experiences and life complexities and the decision to enter therapy may carry feelings of ambivalence and uncertainty. I believe that therapy is most effective when persons are offered an environment that is inviting, attentive, collaborative, affirming, and safe. Subsequently, my goal is to provide a challenging, but non-judgmental and encouraging atmosphere for persons to explore concerns and difficulties as a means of achieving desired change.

Many people choose to enter therapy to gain a deeper understanding of themselves – their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors in addition to problems in their interpersonal relationships. Oftentimes, the issues we face in the present stem from painful experiences in the past. As a result of these experiences, we develop ways of coping in the world – some continue to serve us well and others may get in the way of us living a more fulfilling life. I offer a warm, non-judgmental, and safe environment for exploration, healing, and growth.

So many of us are worried that we have an unfixable problem, or that we ourselves are broken beyond repair. Whatever the issue, we all need someone who's willing to come in and sit in that place with us. I believe that therapy is a relationship, a chance to open up long-closed boxes and explore meaning in a safe place with a caring person. In that space, we can cultivate growth and change.

I help individuals and couples work on trauma, psychological and relational issues and behaviors so that they can resolve them and enrich their lives. I have been a clinical psychologist since the mid-eighties and I view our work together as a collaborative process. I will begin by learning about and understanding you and your problem and we will figure out together what has contributed to your difficulties. The next step is to create a treatment plan tailored to you and your goal/s. Treatment consists of resolving these difficulties and re-accessing joy and interest in life.

* I am not currently accepting new clients.* Our life experiences affect how we view the world and our confidence in navigating through it. Therapy provides an opportunity to examine how these life experiences strengthen and challenge us. Experiencing a traumatic event can cause the world to feel like a dangerous place and result in feeling incompetent in handling daily life tasks. Addressing trauma in therapy can decrease fear and increase confidence in regaining control of your life.

As an EMDR psychotherapist with a background in relational counseling and a strong focus on embodied heartfulness and mindfulness, I have the flexibility to help most folks in their journey and to meet you right where you are as you turn towards wholeness and wellness and away from suffering and stress. I do this work because I believe that our collective light is stronger than our shadow and that peace begins within. These are trying times and a lot of folks are hurting - especially those carrying pain from earlier in life. Both inner peace and a meaningful life are possible and counseling can help you get there.

I make an LGBTQ+ affirming space a priority. I welcome all sexual and gender identities and I work alongside individuals as they define and develop the fabric of their identity, confront the sources of their distress, and integrate already existing strengths and resources into a more cohesive experience of who they are. My practice also supports adolescents and adults as they work through anxiety, depression and the legacy of trauma.

My role is to partner with you in your work to discover, invent and empower yourself. When we are not outside grounding ourselves in nature, I offer more traditional talk therapy for individuals, intimate partners, and families. I want to help you to know and trust yourself if you have faced alienation or discrimination due to racial, gender, age, sexual, ability, or other minority stress. Your identity is not dis-ease. Your individuality contains your strength.

My name is Tim Sosin. I'm certified EMDR therapist and trauma specialist. I treat PTSD, attachment trauma and dissociation by providing therapy intensives. I am devoted to efficiently liberating those living their lives through the lens of their trauma by going directly to the root. You can regain the freedom to write your own story rather than it being authored by your trauma and developmental wounds by default. Healing happens. If you feel like your life is inhibited by your past in any way, I would love to provide you with individual therapy or an intensive healing experience. (Accepting clients for intensives only right now).

Everyone faces some bumps on the road of life. Often times it is helpful to have someone besides friends or family to help fix the pot holes or navigate a new road. One of my strengths is creating a safe space through a non-judgmental attitude, being open minded, using humor, and basically keeping it real. By blending a focus on present day problems and any childhood issues we will work towards the goals you want to accomplish. Together we will focus on you making healthier choices, improving mood and self-esteem, and creating a better life balance.

Jacob is an MSW candidate at Smith, with a 2nd year internship at Walnut Psychotherapy Center. Jacob believes that the relationship between a therapist and a client is of the utmost importance, and that cultivating an environment of safety, understanding, and acceptance is the foundation upon which any therapeutic work must be built. He prides himself on balancing being direct and authentic with clients while maintaining a wholly empathetic stance. Jacob holds that living under racial capitalism is inherently traumatizing, and that therapy should reflect this reality.

I work in pursuit of a greater understanding of a persons life and mind, everything-feelings, beliefs, memories, dreams and even seemingly irrelevant passing thoughts. Emotional healing takes place in a safe space through the empathic work of a committed relationship between psychotherapist and patient that is radically individualized/fully confidential. My approach is with the concern of relieving immediate symptoms and resolving current life problems. Patients are encouraged to talk as freely as possible in an environment that can enhance their awareness into how they see themselves and the world around them with increased sense of freedom and validation.

ACCEPTING NEW CLIENTS! Hi! I'm Courtney and I have a special interest in working with young people dealing with issues of self-esteem/self-worth, recovering from the effects of unhealthy/abusive relationships, navigating adult relationships, and those dealing with major life transitions. Life comes with many challenges and it is normal to feel unsure of how to navigate these challenges. I believe that by improving our personal relationships, as well as understanding recurring themes in our lives, we can develop a better understanding, acceptance, respect, compassion, and love for ourselves and future relationships.

Dissociative Disorders (DID) Therapists
How does therapy for dissociative disorders work?
Dissociation may be triggered by stress or other upsetting circumstances, and therapy can address the traumatic events at the core of an individual’s dissociation. Understanding why a person may dissociate can help the therapist and the individual come up with alternative methods of coping. A person with a dissociative disorder may get stuck on negative thinking, for example, and treatment like cognitive behavioral therapy is a gold standard for breaking such thinking. And dialectical behavior therapy, for example, can help a person manage their anguish through better emotion regulation.
Which therapies are best for dissociative disorders?
Specific approaches used by professionals include cognitive behavioral, dialectical behavior, psychodynamic, schema therapies, among others. Cognitive behavioral and dialectical behavior therapies are two widely used therapies that can help individuals with painful memories and past traumas. These therapies work to integrate an individual's different identities into one person.
Are there specific medications for dissociation?
There are no specific medications prescribed for dissociative disorders. However, psychosis, depression, anxiety, and/or panic often co-occur in dissociative disorders. A psychiatrist may prescribe medications for any accompanying symptom—which may include antipsychotics like aripiprazole, antidepressants like selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, or anti-anxiety drugs like benzodiazepines.
How often and how long are therapy sessions?
Like any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual. Patients may see improvement within 15 to 20 sessions, at an average of 50 minutes per session, others may opt for 20 to 30 sessions over, perhaps, a six-month period. There are still other patients, especially those who have co-occurring conditions like depression and anxiety, who may need to continue sessions for up to 12 to 18 months.
