Born and raised in the inner city by a single mother and a large extended family, I noticed the needs of those that were mentally or physically diagnosed were often not met. Therefore, I began to inquire about what I needed to do in order to be a part of the solution. I began to work in the field and I have worked in Behavioral/Mental Health for close to 20 years. My experience covers a plethora of ages and diagnosis across many settings. My determination to treat and support those with mental health diagnosis during the pandemic inspired me to perform outpatient therapy via telehealth to adults and adolescents.

Outwardly, you seem to have it all together. You’re living the perfect life… on paper. On the inside, it feels like you’re just keeping your head above water. Days are lackluster and monotonous, like someone muted all the colors of life. Yet the painful emotions are vibrant as ever, and are starting to feel overwhelming: anxiety, loneliness, shame. Gnawing emptiness. You try to distract yourself, but it’s getting harder. The critical voice in your head is growing more insistent. You can’t talk about it because you’re the one people go to with their problems. You know something has to change, but you don’t know how or where to start.

Many of my clients feel stuck, numb, untethered, unsure of what to do next. “I don’t know what’s wrong, my mind is racing all the time, like i’m stuck in a loop.” — “I’ve talked about my trauma so much, but I still can’t feel anything.” I use acceptance- and mindfulness-based CBT to support folks in building a meaningful life & living fully within it. I am particularly passionate about working with folks who have sustained trauma or are navigating life with OCD. I provide evidence-based care supported by research, with expertise in exposure and response prevention (ERP) for OCD & trauma-focused treatment approaches (e.g., CPT, PE).

Cognitive Processing (CPT) Therapists
How does cognitive processing therapy work?
A CPT therapist helps a client evaluate their thoughts about the trauma they experienced, focusing on maladaptive or self-blaming thoughts that can exacerbate symptoms of PTSD, anxiety, or depression. The therapist will work with a client to help them learn to challenge such thoughts and consider different perspectives. The therapist is also likely to ask a client to work on these techniques at home between meetings, such as writing an account of their trauma that can be read aloud during a future session.

What is cognitive processing therapy for PTSD?
Cognitive processing therapy (CPT) is a form of cognitive-behavioral therapy primarily used in the treatment of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) to treat individuals who experienced abuse or violence, who survived natural disasters, who were first responders to such incidents, or who otherwise experienced trauma.

How long does cognitive processing therapy last?
CPT is a short-term therapy. Whether conducted one-on-one or in a group, a complete set of CPT sessions typically includes 12 weekly sessions, along with tasks for clients to complete at home, although this can vary depending on a client’s needs or a therapist’s particular treatment plan. Sessions typically last 60 or 90 minutes.

How effective is cognitive processing therapy?
A large body of research supports the use of CPT to treat people experiencing PTSD, finding it to be effective among different age groups, either in one-on-one therapy sessions or in a group therapy environment. Research suggests that although the initial sessions may be difficult, clients tend to begin to feel positive progress after the first few sessions, and that the benefits tend to last well after the therapy ends.
