As a 1st generation,
bisexual
, disabled Asian-American immigrant, I can empathize people who come from multiple backgrounds.
People tend to desire immediate change and solution, but therapy takes time. I see therapy as a journey where there is learning and growth. During the journey, I assist people to slow down their thoughts and acknowledge as well as analyze each thought. This allows them to find the calm within them and find the strength to make the next step.

I strive to create an environment which is affirming and comfortable yet also expect I will challenge clients in their assumptions regarding thoughts, behaviors, and social interactions. I often use humor, clinical vignettes, and use of self (my own experiences) to create a positive therapeutic experience for the clients I serve. I believe therapy is a collaborative process between client and therapist. As such, clients create goals for themselves while therapist assist them in reaching their goals. I want clients to obtain the services that are right for them, as such, I am always willing and happy to provide referrals as needed.

Whether you are coming to therapy for the first time or have therapy experience, I welcome you to my practice. I tailor the therapy experience to meet your needs, drawing from a variety of treatment approaches. Together, we focus on building your strengths and recognizing your inherent wisdom as pathways for healing and growth. My practice is informed by mindfulness meditation, which I have studied as a practitioner and instructor. I encourage clients who are interested in this approach to develop mindfulness techniques that will help them to overcome anxiety, depression and other life challenges.

Finding our path may mean finding that we are unlike those around us. The family we grew up in, the friends we’ve surrounded ourselves with, may be unable to walk beside us on our journey through life. Hope in new, future experiences may be difficult to grasp. Finding abundance along the way may seem an impossible task. In my work with you, we will explore the path you have chosen, and the time you have spent traveling it. We will talk about what fed you, what surprised you, and what brought you pain. Our exploration will help us understand how your path has shaped you on your journey, and illuminate your way.

I remember my own experience meeting my new therapist. I was anxious to talk to a new person. I did not know if I would make sense. I did not want to feel judged. I remember feeling lost and hopeless. The only thing I knew was that I wanted to change the bad feelings and I resisted to believe that there was something wrong with me. I wanted someone who could guide me to understand my world and myself. I wanted a safe space. I needed to find someone who could collaborate with me in changing and resisting. I did not want a therapist who treated me as a study object. I just wanted to feel fully human.

Therapy is a space to explore the ghosts of your past and to make sense of the way that those ghosts exist in your present moment. It is through this understanding that you can fully create the shape of your future. People often come to therapy with a precise problem to address, and other times people come with a general sense that they are not living their lives in a way that feels right or true. Whatever your reason for seeking support, I believe that therapy can help you build a life that holds less pain that holds more joy, connection, and meaning.

At the core, I believe we all want to feel loved, heard, and understood. However, there may be things getting in the way of what we want, such as trauma, family influences, and societal messaging. My goal is to co-create a space with you (and your partner) that is affirming of your unique background and experiences. We can explore where you’re feeling stuck and how to create new opportunities for healing, intimacy, and connection. I work with individuals and couples of all backgrounds but have particular interest and experience in the queer, poly/CNM, and Black communities.

I believe that life should be filled with joy and positive experiences, despite the world we live in pushing many of us to live in “survival mode”. I help clients identify areas of growth in their lives, whether that means healing from trauma, moving through a difficult transition, or coming to understand a mental health diagnosis for the first time. I utilize a trauma-informed approach which means that I empower my clients to decide what they need from therapy and allow them to control the pace of opening up.

Finding the right therapist can be intimidating. My goal is to make the therapy process welcoming and transparent. I work particularly well with people who've been told they are "too sensitive" or who identify as Highly Sensitive People. My talent lies in treating anxiety, trauma and attachment/relationship wounds, as well as self-esteem. I support those who care for their communities: healers, caregivers, artists or those with creative practices, and activists. I've worked with ages 3-90 across class, race, gender, sexual orientation, & health status. Together, we can explore hard topics with sensitivity and humor.

We've all found ways of surviving in a chaotic and overwhelming world, but many of those survival strategies can make us feel out of control, disconnected or helpless. Developing a deeper understanding and appreciation for the ways your brain and body have learned to adapt can illuminate new paths toward connection, self worth, agency and meaning. Instead of viewing our suffering as a personal failure, we can see how various causes and conditions have led to habits of reaction that might actually be increasing suffering. This level of awareness, understanding and acceptance can show us where we have power to change.

Hey there! Therapy can be such an overwhelming process to get started with, especially when you may already be struggling with feelings of burnout, depression, or anxiety that make everyday tasks feel monumental. In particular for Black, queer, or neurodivergent individuals, feeling safe and truly seen by their therapist may be particularly challenging. With over 9 years experience, my approach to therapy is strengths-based, person-centered, affirming, anti-oppressive, and relational. Together we will consider functional strategies to help you close the gap between the life you're living, and the life you want to be living.

Pause for a moment, and picture your life as a garden. This garden was gifted at birth by “parents”, who starting with our name planted various “seeds' ' of who and what they thought we would become. Some parents are better gardeners than others, but they are not the only sowers of seed. Extended family, teachers, friends, a former partner, a litter bug stranger. One day we look at our garden and recognize we don't enjoy what's growing. What are these vines that keep choking the flowers? Why does this plant keep showing up? How do I get rid of this mint without ruining everything else!?!

I take pride in helping others build trust and positive connections, even when it feels hopeless. I currently serve adults, adolescents ages 16+, and families of teens 13 and up. My extensive background in family therapy, working with adults in multiple settings and adolescents in their homes and classrooms allows me to dedicate our time to learning your strengths, and using them to assist you with creating the specific tools that you and your family need to rebuild the connections that you may have believed to be lost forever.

Hello! My name is Joanne. I’m a therapist specializing in inclusive, affirming care for queer, polyam, and kinky individuals and their loved ones. Therapy should always be a safe space for individuals to work on their deepest vulnerabilities, so let’s talk about stuff like gender identity, orientation, nudity, relationship styles, safe sex, or body image to name a few. The general public can be sex-negative at times, and so, too many people feel shame over identities, desires, and behaviors that are perfectly healthy. Sex is everywhere in our culture, yet meaningful conversations about sex isn’t. Let’s change that.
