Hi, my name is Hyelee (pronounced Haley despite the spelling), and I'm a Marriage and Family Therapist who brings my humor, intuition, and attentive ear to each of my clients. I see life as a journey through a world that can be both beautiful and broken; a journey that in turn shapes how we see ourselves and others. I am invested in helping clients more deeply understand their intra- and interpersonal patterns and the existential themes of their lives. I especially love working with couples because we are hard-wired for connection and belonging, and the quality of our relationships acutely impacts our sense of wellbeing.

My approach towards healing isn't one dimensional, just like healing isn't linear. As a therapist, I bring a relational therapy approach to my work. I am trained in EMDR, Psychodynamic work, and Internal Family Systems. I let clients dictate the kind of care they are looking for, and sometimes that changes from session to session. I understand that my own identies inform how I see the world and I believe in being transparent with my clients about this. I try to take as many insurance carriers as I can to keep this service fair to both of us. Sliding scale is also available.

I am also a VCAP provider through the state of Pennsylvania and an Asian Mental Health Collective Lotus Therapy Fund provider.
Knowing that opening up about true feelings with another person can be intimidating, I create a warm space to unpack clients’ stories and uncover the root causes of issues with curiosity and tenderness. My practice is grounded in understanding the unique experiences of my clients, especially how systems around us contribute to distress. I believe in the natural intuition and resilience of all people and highlight those in therapy so that greater understanding and compassion for oneself can emerge, while also empowering clients with new perspectives and tools.

Are you feeling stuck in your relationships with your partner, family, and colleagues? Are you feeling powerless sometimes? Do you feel like you're never good enough in your relationships, your family, your job? Do you feel lonely even though you are in a relationship? You are not alone. As human being, we all share foundation needs: to connect to people, to feel loved and valued, and be able to love ourselves and others. Sometimes we just get lost in survival patterns developed by trauma and daily stress.

It's truly transformative when we learn to trust our innate wisdom and emotions. They can serve as powerful guides, helping us find greater ease in both our minds and bodies, and even reshape our relationships for the better. It all starts here, searching for that potential connection that can help you live a more joyful and meaningful life. My goal is to help you by using relational, cultural, and interpersonal approaches. I also incorporate mutual empathy, authenticity, compassion, collaboration, and empowerment, and integrate these into creating a safe therapeutic environment and nurturing growth-oriented relationships.

I specialize in childhood trauma, Asian mental health, and family relationships.
You don’t understand why your family causes you so many sleepless nights. You need someone to talk to but feel shame bringing up family issues or you don’t know where to start. You try to please everyone but you end up being the unhappy one. You cut off toxic family relationships but this leaves you feeling guilt, loneliness, and resentment. To prove yourself, you work hard and sometimes overcompensate. Past unresolved issues consume your energy, make you question yourself, and become hesitant to try a new relationship. You don’t want to be your parents but you don’t know how not to. You doubt if you can live a different life.

Many of my patients are people with multicultural/multiracial families and relationships, immigrants or the adult children of immigrants, people of Asian descent, clinicians, or people who still feel empty and unsatisfied after achieving conventional hallmarks of success.
With empathy and care, I will partner with you to explore your life, history, culture(s), and the wider world to see how these shape your inner experiences and relationships. In addition to feeling better, my hope is to help you to discover and create new ways of being in the world that feel more alive, flexible, authentic, resilient, and effective.

As the daughter of Chinese immigrants, I like working with first/second generation immigrants who are navigating family expectations, clashing cultures, and intergenerational trauma—or anyone who was parentified as a child and now as an adult, struggles in relationships with boundaries or getting their needs met. Through the principles of intuitive eating, I also help people reconnect with their bodies, heal their relationship with food, and move beyond diet culture. But the clients I enjoy working with most are those who are open to reflection and committed to growth.

While starting therapy can seem intimidating or daunting, I want you to know that you always deserve to take up space in therapy. I aim to create a warm and welcoming place where you can show up as your true, funny, messy, worthy self. I help my clients (both individuals and couples) uncover strengths they already possess. I often explore intersecting identities, new identities, otherness, and reclaiming ME. My work stems from a social justice lens; remembering the context, rejecting oppression, and affirming all identities.

Many of my clients come to therapy because they feel held back in cycles of self-doubt or difficulty moving through stress/life transitions that limit their agency and possibility. They are often people who want more clarity and freedom in how they relate to themselves and others, and who value a therapy process that emphasizes self-reflection and autonomy. I currently offer individual psychotherapy for young adults and adults with anxiety, low mood, self esteem concerns, grief and loss, chronic restlessness/guilt, cultural identity, academic stress, life transitions, career burnout/stressors and stress that can come with change.

I approach therapy with openness, curiosity, compassion, and non-judgement, building a space where it feels safe to explore and bring the whole of your experiences, joys and struggles alike. Throughout our lives, we learn to navigate the world in certain ways, helping us survive and make sense of things; our responses, beliefs, and patterns of relationships are shaped by past experiences. I work with you to better understand these experiences, and compassionately reflect on how your past informs current ways of being, acknowledging interpersonal and systemic influences.

Asian Therapists

Why is it important for a therapist to be culturally sensitive?

A culturally sensitive therapist would be respectful and considerate of different groups, with regard to race, sexual orientation, gender, and other factors that are important to an individual. These considerations can help a client feel understood as well as validated. While some people think highlighting race could promote stereotypes and bias, more understanding and knowledge about cultural differences is a positive for a healthy therapeutic alliance.

How can I recognize an effective Asian therapist?

You can discern a lot by asking how familiar the potential therapist is with different cultures, as well as asking how they might address issues related to identity, values, and beliefs. Also inquire about their education, as well as any particular training they may have completed, such as cultural sensitivity or diversity and inclusion programs.

What if the therapist does not have my exact background?

The therapist may not share a client’s exact background, but the therapist may have plenty of hands-on experience as well as the sensitivity needed for therapeutic progress. Their sensitivity to different populations will help the client feel accepted and comfortable in sharing their concerns and difficulties.

How might I inquire about a therapist's experience with Asian clients?

A therapist with an Asian background may have experience within their community, as well as broader cultural sensitivity. Ask the potential therapist whether they've worked with individuals who share your background. If they have not worked with similar clients, they may well know someone who has such experience.

Who is included in Psychology Today's directory of Asian therapists?

The directory of Asian therapists includes professionals who have shared their ethnicity in their profiles. Psychology Today uses this information to assist clients in finding a therapist who can provide a cultural match. However, not all therapists choose to disclose their ethnicity in their profiles, and they may not appear in search results for this reason; also, when the number of therapists identified as Asian is limited, the directory will also show therapists with comprehensive experience working with clients from relevant backgrounds.
