Accepting new clients! I help people overcome difficulty and use it to grow and pursue a life of meaning and purpose. Sometimes we start by treating stress, anxiety, depression, trauma, career, or LGBTQ+ and other identity issues, and over time turn to deeper issues about the life you want to create, your identity, and your values. I’m a humanistic counselor, which means I’ll never tell you what to do and I’ll always empower you to make the choice that’s best for you. I use a collaborative, gentle approach that helps you connect with your intuitive sense of self and your intrinsic motivation to grow and do difficult things.

Hi My name is Maggie Blackburn and I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker who helps people with social and relationship anxiety, to learn how to be confident and explore social and romantic relationships.
You have noticed for a while that when you are around other people you take things personally, you don’t feel confident, you second guess yourself or find yourself replaying different situations you’ve been in over and over again. You aren’t “anti-social”, in fact you really want to BE social, but every time an opportunity comes up for you to do something you either need someone else to go with you or you talk yourself out of going. It has been a long time since you have been on a date or had what felt like a healthy relationship. You are starting to think that you will never find someone.

I've been in practice now for almost 10 years and have experience working with individuals who struggle with anxiety, depression, overthinking/intellectualizing, trauma, boundary setting, people pleasing, disentangling from diet culture, reproductive health (Infertility, IVF, TFMR, PCOS, etc.
People generally don't seek therapy because life is going smoothly. I'm sorry you've been struggling. Working together we can identify and highlight your strengths to help you move through the world with less stress and struggle. Building resilience will assist you in managing shame, doubt, guilt, and trauma from your past and help you move forward. Our sessions will generally feel like a conversation with a trusted friend as we navigate stressors and old narratives that are currently affecting you.

As a therapist, I love working with someone who is ready to dive in, set daily goals, and start feeling better asap. Whether you are struggling with depression, grief, anxiety, problems in your marriage- I am on your team and I hear you. Thoreau once said "Most men lead lives of quiet desperation"- none of us should be resigned to that. If you need a listening ear, a sounding board, a cheerleader, someone to push you out of your comfort zone, someone who gets you- I might be the therapist for you. If you want to live, not just exist- if you want to heal and be stronger, if you want to learn how to love yourself- let's do this!

I became a therapist to help families stay together even through trauma and hurts, and I continued to do this work because of how it feels to watch someone have that "ah-ha" moment and flourish. I am so passionate about supporting families that I also facilitate webinars and teach courses on how other therapists can support families with a trauma-informed approach. I have enjoyed working with adolescents and their families through 10 years of my clinical experience and currently enjoy supporting adults and couples who suffer from symptoms of anxiety, depression, and trauma, such as PTSD and grief and loss.

My background includes LGBTQ individuals and families who experience anxiety, depression, loss, trauma, PTSD and family conflict.
I believe we should all have access to a space where we can be open and honest with who we are and what we need to thrive. It is important to me that I support individuals in cultivating such a space with safety and freedom of feelings, thoughts and emotions. We all deserve a chance to thrive in life and find some sense of peace and understanding of experiences that make us who we are. I am here to challenge any notions that you cannot be your best self and find solace in that.

Anxiety Therapists

What are the most common treatments for anxiety?

Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioral therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other popular forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioral Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.

How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?

The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.

When should I seek treatment for anxiety?

Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.

How effective is treatment for anxiety?

Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
