My work centers on the
Black
community impacted by childhood, racial, and/or generational traumas and mass incarceration/systemic traumas.
Somatic Social Justice Art, Play, & Hip-Hop Therapist. You are the expert on your life story. My role is to offer guidance when the road gets bumpy - you don't have to navigate life challenges alone. Together, we'll find the best way to approach your individual circumstance. The word "Sankofa" reminds us that it's ok to reflect on the past... in fact, it is one of the bravest things you can do. I creatively incorporate the neurobiology of trauma (brain science) to help you write the life story you want.

I am passionate about supporting
Black
and other People of Color through their unique experiences with mental health. Throughout my time as a clinician, I have always strived to be aware of how outside systemic issues and factors contribute to disparities in mental health care, particularly in communities of color. As a
Black
therapist, I believe that comprehensive mental health treatment acknowledges and accounts for how discrimination and other social barriers can affect one’s ability to process their experiences and safely navigate the world.

Clinically, there are no diagnoses or language to effectively communicate the systemic trauma absorbed by
Black
bodies in America, allowing for common misdiagnosing, over-diagnosing, misunderstanding, and ignoring of lived experiences.
Bourne ANEW, a consultation service founded by Kenn Bourne, a Philadelphia-based social worker, provides curated interventions and valuable skills to
Black
boys and young men, so they may have a fair shot to lead the purposeful lives we all need them to.
Black
bodies are complicated and intersect many systems. Until now, this overlooked population has been forced to seek healing in therapeutic spaces that have not yet adapted to intersecting modalities of healing.

As a
Black
individual or Person of Color, this may or not be your first experience with therapy. You may feel overwhelmed by stress, life transitions, and past unhealed wounds and are unsure of what to do. Or you might be curious about the roots of your distress and pain. Or you might feel burned out from the ongoing fight against social injustice. Or you might struggle to find emotional balance as you pursue a degree in higher education. If any of these describe you, know that you are not alone and there is hope.

As an
African American
woman, I have a grave understanding of the trials and tribulations individuals of color face in today's society.
Greetings, my name is Dr. Allena M. Moncrief and I have been providing therapeutic services to clients in the Philadelphia area since 2010. I obtained my PhD from Drexel University in the field of Couple and Family Therapy in 2017. As a psychotherapist, I understand the decision to enter psychotherapy can be extremely challenging for some individuals. Thus, I strive to meet individuals where they are in the therapeutic process. This process involves helping individuals explore the root of their difficulties/road blocks and assisting them with creating a roadmap that will lead to a more fulfilling and enjoyable life.

As a queer
Black
woman, I'm intentional about using an intersectional lens in my work.
At the core, I believe we all want to feel loved, heard, and understood. However, there may be things getting in the way of what we want, such as trauma, family influences, and societal messaging. My goal is to co-create a space with you (and your partner) that is affirming of your unique background and experiences. We can explore where you’re feeling stuck and how to create new opportunities for healing, intimacy, and connection. I work with individuals and couples of all backgrounds but have particular interest and experience in the queer, poly/CNM, and
Black
communities.

With over 9 years experience, my approach to therapy is strengths-based, person-centered, affirming, anti-oppressive, and relational. Together we will consider functional strategies to help you close the gap between the life you're living, and the life you envision for yourself.

As a queer, cis,

Taking this first step of searching through profiles on Psychology Today demonstrates a certain level of commitment to improve the quality of your mental health. And it can also be quite overwhelming sifting through all the options (hello decision fatigue). Collectively we're all dealing with so much right now as human beings on this planet. The mental health epidemic that existed prior to 2020 has only been further exacerbated as a result of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Whether navigating stressors of day-to-day life, or experiencing a more acute crisis, therapy can be an excellent source of support, healing and empowerment.

How can I find a therapist in Philadelphia?
Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.

Is online therapy a good option?
Therapy conducted online or over the phone can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.
What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?
Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the United States, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.
What type of therapist is right for me?
Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist, psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.
Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?
The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors. Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.
What type of therapy is right for me?
The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.
Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?
Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.
