Being a teen is hard! And being a parent is hard, too! By creating a non-blaming and non-judgemental space, I can help support teens or parents in their individual work or also include a combination of parent-child/family work, as collaboratively decided together.
I am a licensed clinical social worker specializing in providing relational, trauma-informed and attachment-focused therapy for teens, adults and families. I love working with teens and creating a safe place for them to be able to better understand themselves, why they are struggling, to help them feel accepted and to develop healhier ways of coping. I have learned through my experience that there are often unmet needs, difficult/adverse life experiences, feelings of disconnection, and/or trauma that underly the emotional, social, or behavioral issues that arise. I work with teens and parents to address these throughout therapy.

Getting started can be difficult, but you got this! Whether you're a parent struggling with how best to relate to your child, a teen who is not sure how to navigate through the trials of adolescence, or an emerging adult struggling with "adulting" stress, you need not go at it alone.
My clients often share that they feel heard, seen, and celebrated as individuals throughout therapy. I apply research-backed, trauma-informed, multi-culturally competent individual therapy to instill hope, self-compassion, and empowerment in young people. Through gentle guidance, developmentally appropriate psychoeducation, and empathic listening, my clients are able to tap into their inner strengths and vulnerabilities, and learn to tolerate discomforts and-- once and for all-- conquer their fears and insecurities.

As a trained and experienced child, adolescent and adult psychoanalyst, I am able to offer the deepest form of therapy when this is determined to be the treatment of choice.
I believe in the Talking Cure. Life can be fraught with disappointments, losses, stressors and challenges that feel overwhelming and discouraging. Finding words to describe thoughts, feelings, past and present experiences, in presence of a compassionate and non-judgmental other, affords profound and lasting relief from the emotional discomfort that interferes with the ability to live the life one desires. Undigested emotional pain from the past can interfere with ones ability to live a full and satisfying life in the present. Identifying those emotions whose roots are in the past, frees us to live more fully in the here and now.

Greetings, my name is Dr. Allena M. Moncrief and I have been providing therapeutic services to clients in the Philadelphia area since 2010. I obtained my PhD from Drexel University in the field of Couple and Family Therapy in 2017. As a psychotherapist, I understand the decision to enter psychotherapy can be extremely challenging for some individuals. Thus, I strive to meet individuals where they are in the therapeutic process. This process involves helping individuals explore the root of their difficulties/road blocks and assisting them with creating a roadmap that will lead to a more fulfilling and enjoyable life.

Teen Therapists

What does therapy for teenagers look like?

When a therapist works with a teenager, the pair will talk about what the teen is struggling with and explore solutions, which may involve interpersonal skills, coping strategies, medication, or lifestyle changes related to sleep, diet, and exercise. Different therapists employ different modalities, but most involve a combination of conversation and skill building.

How long does therapy for teenagers generally take to work?

There’s variability in teenagers’ experiences and challenges; some may begin to improve from therapy within a few weeks while others may take several months or longer. Teens can discuss their progress with their therapist periodically to assess how they’re improving and any changes to the treatment plan that could potentially accelerate that progress.

How do you encourage a teenager to go to therapy?

It’s helpful to express your concern and love while framing therapy as an opportunity to explore a tool that could help improve their life; just like they practice baseball or dance, now they can practice their emotional skills. Give your teen control over the process where you can—maybe by weighing in on choice of therapist and signaling that therapy involves confidentiality, so a parent need not know all that is discussed in sessions.

How do you prepare teens for therapy?

You can prepare your teenager for therapy by describing what the process will look like and setting expectations for timeline, if requested. You can explain that the first session may begin with an assessment phase, that they can describe their experiences but that the therapist will ask questions too, and that it may take time to feel comfortable opening up. Ask how they’re feeling about the process and answer any questions calmly and supportively.
