I have worked with people who have difficulty with anger management, struggle with their Spirituality, have a history of PTSD and Trauma, childhood sexual abuse , addiction/substance abuse, domestic violence, and with sleep issues.
As a therapist I meet you where you are in life and join with you for a time on your journey to self-improvement. On this journey, it is so important to feel heard. Therapy is about being heard and empowering you to use your voice to be the person you want to be and to lead the life you want to lead. I listen deeply as we work together to identify and meet your therapeutic goals. I believe the environment is a part of the whole person that impacts one’s emotional, mental and physical well-being and needs to be considered in therapy. I invite your feedback regarding what is working and not working for you in our therapy sessions.

My research focuses on men and relationships, issues of intimacy, raising boys, fathering, healing from sexual abuse and other sexual challenges.
I work with individuals and couples to create positive changes in their lives. This includes those struggling in areas such as self-esteem, intimacy, addressing emotional needs, healing from past hurts/trauma, a history of neglect or abuse, or challenges regarding gender and sexuality. I work with couples, straight/lesbian/gay, who are working on their relationship, whether as a result of an affair, or realizing differences that keep them from being close. My research focuses on men and the effects of expectations on men’s lives. Pursuing therapy represents a longing to heal. My work is about supporting that process.

According to the great poet Rainer Maria Rilke, "The only journey is the journey within." We all need help sometimes and we all have room to grow. I believe that everyone can benefit from therapy, whether it is to address a severe mental illness, to receive support through a rough season of life, or to gain greater self-knowledge and unleash your full potential. Therapy can be a beautiful journey of healing, empowerment, and growth, but starting that journey can be difficult and takes a lot of courage. Therapy can be a space to pause and navigate life’s challenges with the support of another. As a therapist, I believe that building a strong therapeutic relationship is a key component to creating a safe, accepting environment from which you can heal and grow. I prioritize relief from the pain that has brought you to this moment by providing strategies to better manage your symptoms. I also believe that true healing comes from deeper reflection and understanding of our experiences and culture

I see my job as a therapist as providing a particular kind of space. A space that helps people to feel comfortable, and one that helps people to talk. It is through this talking that healing and transformation become possible. I believe that human beings have a natural tendency to move towards growth, maturity, and happiness. Sometimes, however, things happen in life that trip us up. Things get in our way. These obstacles can be diminished, weakened, and removed through the therapeutic process. That's what therapy is; the removal of what stands in the way of our movement towards our goals, desires, and dreams.

Prioritizing your health, both physical and mental, is a sign of strength. I have spent the majority of my career working with survivors of various traumas and felt honored to observe the dedication of my clients to live the fulfilling and healthy life they deserve. Traumas can manifest in unexpected ways: relationship difficulties, depression/anxiety, academic/workplace obstacles, low self-esteem, etc.. I can support you in identifying these trends, processing the underlying causes, and ending unhealthy habits. You can do this; I can help.

You've been through some shit, and you've realized that it's fucked you up more than you want to admit. You've tried dealing with things in your own way but you feel isolated, frustrated, and irritated. Passion, fun, and focus are hard to come by these days. You've tried to avoid feelings, situations, or conversations that remind you of what you've been through. But now, even avoidance isn't working. You turn to things outside yourself - relationships, substance use, job performance, and being perfect - to define you and keep you going. You want to find a better way to manage your life.

Sexual Abuse Therapists

How do therapists treat sexual abuse?

A good therapist will be nonjudgmental and possibly demonstrate active listening, repeating back what the client says to show that they have understood. These skills allow people to feel comfortable discussing their traumatic experiences openly. Some important treatment goals are to restore a sense of safety and to rebuild confidence. In addition to working one-on-one with the patient, a therapist might bring in supportive family members to assist the client.

Do you have to talk extensively about sexual abuse in therapy?

Survivors frequently find it difficult to describe what happened to them out loud. They can even still be in a state of denial if the sexual abuse occurred recently. It is important for survivors to acknowledge that what happened isn’t their fault and to challenge and reappraise any unhealthy feelings or thoughts as they arise. Art therapy and play therapy are useful non-verbal means of communication for some survivors.

How long does treatment for sexual abuse take?

Recovery from sexual abuse can be a long and difficult process. Some survivors are able to move on naturally on their own, given time, while others require the guidance of a trained therapist. Therapy needs vary and can range from a few sessions to months or even years. Healing from sexual abuse takes time, and everyone’s journey will look a little different.

Can trauma symptoms caused by sexual abuse come back after treatment?

As occurs in many cases of trauma, survivors of sexual abuse may experience PTSD-like symptoms long after the abuse has ceased or after an initial round of treatment has occurred. In such a case, there is evidence that prolonged exposure therapy is a useful treatment for survivors, and may be more efficacious than supportive counseling alone. While triggers may continue to cause distress, the idea is that, with time and repeated exposure, their power will fade, allowing survivors to move on with their lives.
