I am a licensed psychotherapist, with training in psychoanalysis, psychodynamic, and relational theory. As we uncover early-life experiences, traumatic events, stuck points, relationship turmoil, and/or complex family dynamics that have plagued your life journey. It can be very difficult to admit that you need help, especially when you're not sure what is wrong or why. That is why I seek to foster a safe environment where you can start to come to understand what brought you to me in the first place. You get to be you, and you get to be honest. I will not treat your politics, your relationship style, your gender, or your outlook on the world as a symptom of your mental health. I strive allow all of my patients to come as they are.

I have worked with a range of patients and problems, including depression, anxiety, trauma, loss, anger, relationship issues, identity conflict, and struggles with self-esteem.
I view the psychotherapy process as a collaboration, where the two of us are working together to make sense of the obstacles interfering with your emotional well-being. My treatment approach is psychodynamic and relational. I find that closely attending to shifts in the therapeutic relationship - in a safe and empathic manner - can be powerful in unlocking painful patterns and enhancing personal strengths. My aim is to help you gain a fuller understanding of yourself and, in turn, more freedom of choice so you can live a more meaningful life, with greater comfort.

A patient presents with concerns regarding impulsive decision-making and wanting to change relationship patterns. She was recently diagnosed with postpartum after giving birth 30 days prior. She is currently in a relationship with the child's father and reports being unhappy with his parenting skills. She wants to go out on her own but is afraid he will separate her from the child. In therapy, she has clarified that she does not want to share with him at the child's young age.

I have worked in both individual and group settings, serving women with eating disorders and other co-morbid mental illnesses, such as anxiety, depression and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). It was important for me to continue to serve the needs of individuals struggling with Eating Disorders, disordered eating and body image issues. In addition, I wanted to expand my range of therapy to include therapies for couples and families as well as for individuals. I value supporting clients in developing a greater understanding of themselves to improve their view of self, how they interact with others and the world around them.

I believe the most important aspect to therapy is the relationship between therapist and client.
People seek therapy for a variety of reasons: they feel "stuck," want to create greater meaning in their lives, improve relationships, achieve specific goals or work through various stressors. Whatever your reason, I will work to create a safe therapeutic experience specific to your personal concerns. This includes strengthening problem solving abilities, challenging maladaptive thinking patterns, creating behavioral change and increasing confidence and comfort.

People contact me when they want to feel less anxious, down, or "stuck" in their lives. Some are paralized by panic and worry; others feel deeply discouraged and doubtful about their futures, and some are facing relationship problems, loss, or are at a crossroads in life. My clients range in age from 22 to 95, so I am familiar with the ways these struggles show themselves througout the lifespan. My approach is warm, collaborative, and shaped to each client's needs. The focus is on what we think, and how we treat our thinking.

Couples Counseling Therapists

Does couples counseling work?

Research shows that couples counseling is effective; it can reduce relationship distress and improve emotional awareness, communication, empathy, intimacy, and overall relationship satisfaction. For example, emotionally focused therapy was found to be effective for about 75 percent of couples, and those benefits lasted at least two years.

When should a couple seek counseling?

Couples can benefit from counseling if they consistently struggle in their relationship. They may have lost the ability to communicate effectively, become entrenched in harmful patterns, begun to fight more than usual, broken the other’s trust, suffered from a mental or physical illness, or faced any number of other challenges. Many therapists offer free consultations, so if a couple isn’t sure whether therapy is necessary, asking directly can provide clarity.

How can I get my partner to go to couples therapy?

The decision to seek couples therapy is often driven by one partner, who then convinces the other to participate. When discussing the idea, the initiator should be direct and assertive. They can state the problems they see and explain how the relationship would benefit from therapy. In more serious cases, they can also explain how their relationship may suffer without making any changes or seeking professional help.

How does a couple prepare for couples counseling?

The anticipation of beginning couples counseling can be difficult—sometimes more difficult than the first session itself. Taking a few moments to reflect can allay those concerns: What are the current challenges? When and how did they begin? What do they want the relationship to look like in the future? Reflecting on these questions can help individuals or couples articulate their goals. Of course, the therapist will also ask questions and guide couples through the process.
