I offer treatment for additional concerns including: codependency /family conflict, anxiety, and complex trauma.
You look in the mirror and see the "bad" traits. That you're not thin enough, not smart enough, not "good" enough. You realize that these traits were projected there by someone else--a past partner, or maybe even a parent. You want to recover from perhaps a lifetime of emotional pain and narcissistic abuse but you don't know where to begin...I specialize in treating individuals who are adult children of narcissists, and those who may be struggling with disordered eating and body image issues. I can support you in developing your inner strengths so that when you look in the mirror it will be your true self staring back at you.

Everyone seeks love and happiness in their lives, but for many of us, this requires work. Although being intimately attached to another can bring healing and joy, sometimes we begin to question our relationships. For over 38 years, I have been helping couples restore those relationships that have hit a rough patch. It is my goal to help couples find their way back to each other by empowering them with the tools to understand each other and heal themselves and their relationships.

I believe people have an inherent need to know themselves and relate to others authentically. When people struggle to be themselves, they can end up feeling depressed, anxious, and overwhelmed. Therapy can help provide a newfound sense of self, wholeness, and joy in life. My work is based on viewing people in terms of their individuality and humanity, not a set of diagnostic labels and a conglomeration of symptoms. I believe that healing takes place through the creation of a trusting therapeutic relationship, and I ensure that I provide empathic feedback and responsiveness to create such a relationship.

I use an integrative approach to counseling and psychotherapy to best serve the individual needs of each client. I understand that a strong therapeutic relationship, including a foundation of trust, is essential to the therapeutic process. Learning about my client and understanding the presenting issue(s), we work collaboratively to identify goals for therapy. A Treatment Plan, tailored to each client, involves a combination of cognitive, affective, behavioral, and somatic techniques. I draw from a variety of methodologies and techniques to incorporate what is most helpful in resolving current and long-standing issues.

My speciality is working with individuals experiencing issues with stress, anxiety, depression, addiction, over-eating, grief and trauma. My approach is to first identify existing coping strategies to deal with the current stressors. Together, we sort out the underlying problems and identify and develop a tool kit with more effective coping strategies for the many challenges that the world throws at you. We examine and re-frame your emotional reactions to current and past trauma. The relationship between therapist and client is really important for change; and I do my best to provide a warm, natural, humorous and relaxed atmosphere.

Being a human being isn't easy. Unfortunately, it seems we are destined at times in our lives to experience pain, fear, confusion, and difficulty. The good news is that it is often through befriending and understanding that which is most painful, frightening, or challenging that we grow and find more enduring freedom and peace. As a therapist, I see my role as offering the nurturing environment within which individuals can better understand themselves and their lives, overcome their challenges, and discover their true potential.

Relationships are hard. My goal is to help couples identify the patterns in which they get stuck, the emotional needs underneath their arguments, and what is preventing them from understanding their partners. I utilize strategies that help build mutual trust and emotional safety in order to regulate intense feelings of anxiety, fear, and pain. Couples will learn how to argue fairly, communicate effectively without escalating into blame or criticism, and improve their listening skills. Couples therapy helps create new and sustainable ways of connecting to one another and nourishing the love and respect in their relationships.

You don't need to live an unsatisfied life. If you feel like you are stuck in the same old patterns of thinking, feeling, and relating, it is a good time to begin your journey in therapy. My goal in therapy is to help guide you toward a deeper understanding of who you are, what you do, and the impact of your important life experiences. In gaining critical insights, you will begin to feel a greater sense of control over life; you may even encounter a profound sense of relief in being freed from old patterns and finding new ways of relating to yourself and others.

Having the tools we need to navigate our way through life's challenges is often the key to greater happiness and fulfillment. I believe that human beings start from a place of health and resilience. When we have difficult or traumatic experiences, we can often be sidetracked by self-doubt, anxiety, depression and more. This can make life and relationships feel overwhelming, confusing and at times unmanageable. Therapy provides a safe space to explore and understand ourselves better while also developing the tools we need to move forward. Through this process, we can begin to heal from the past while creating a more intentional future.

Codependency Therapists

What therapy types help with codependency problems?

Both couples and family therapy and cognitive and behavioral therapy (CBT) can help with the relationship difficulties referred to as codependency. Such problems typically include inappropriate feelings of responsibility for a loved one’s destructive behavior, irrational patterns of thinking about such behavior, and family interaction patterns in which the needs of one troubled member override the needs of others in a household.

What happens in therapy for codependency?

Spouses and family members learn and practice how to interact and support each other in a healthy way without sacrificing their own needs or well-being. They learn the limits of their responsibility for their loved ones and correct faulty patterns of thinking and feeling that underlie codependent behavior. Individuals may be encouraged to nurture an array of social relationships and to cultivate their own talents and interests so that they develop a healthy sense of self outside the family.

How does therapy help a person or couple overcome codependency?

Therapy helps people establish healthy ways of being in a relationship. Spouses and family members learn how to nurture and support one another without sacrificing their own needs or allowing the needs of one person to dominate the dynamic. Individuals learn how to say no and set boundaries, and how to maintain their own identity and self-esteem. Therapy helps people understand that they are not responsible for the feelings and actions of others. It also helps individuals deal with the turbulence that can come from living with a person suffering from such conditions as substance abuse and mental illness.

What is the goal of therapy for codependency?

One goal of therapy for codependency is to alleviate feelings of responsibility for and correct irrational patterns of thinking about loved ones whose behavioral problems override the needs of others in a household. Therapy helps people establish healthy boundaries of behavior and speak up for their own needs in a relationship. In addition, people learn how to maintain a healthy relationship, one in which both parties give and receive equally and are able to retain their own identity.
