These are uncertain times. Therapy can be an anchor as we all weather the unpredictable circumstances of our lives and the world around us. It can be a place to grow, heal, or make changes in your live that feel difficult. I work with clients who need help managing anxiety , are feeling sad or confused, or are going through a hard time. I see my job as sitting next to you, seeing the world through your eyes, and helping you come up with the plan that's right for you. I come from a relational and social justice perspective and bring tools from narrative therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, and mindfulness based stress reduction.

Some things are difficult to think about and even harder to talk about. Perhaps you are experiencing depression or anxiety , dissatisfaction in a relationship or career, or struggling with substance abuse/misuse or self-sabotaging behaviors. These are just some of the many reasons that one might find themselves seeking help from a therapist. When one makes the decision to seek help it is the courageous first step in the journey to self-awareness and a more fulfilling life. Very simply, my role as a therapist is to help you begin the transformative journey of uncovering limiting beliefs that are obstacles to emotional wellness.

I love working with clients who are struggling with anxiety , trauma, and big life transitions.
Do you find that transitions trigger big emotions and make you feel scared, overwhelmed, or consumed by self-doubt? Change is hard for most people, but some of us are particularly sensitive and feel more easily unsettled by the shifting winds of life. Even wanted and planned transitions - like getting married, buying a home, getting pregnant, and having children - can trigger anxiety , depression, trauma, and grief. Unwanted and unexpected struggles like infertility, miscarriage, loss, and birth trauma can feel excruciatingly painful and isolating.

My background includes LGBTQ individuals and families who experience anxiety , depression, loss, trauma, PTSD and family conflict.
I believe we should all have access to a space where we can be open and honest with who we are and what we need to thrive. It is important to me that I support individuals in cultivating such a space with safety and freedom of feelings, thoughts and emotions. We all deserve a chance to thrive in life and find some sense of peace and understanding of experiences that make us who we are. I am here to challenge any notions that you cannot be your best self and find solace in that.

I work with clients with a variety of mental health concerns; specializing in grief & loss, anxiety , depression, & living with life threatening illness.
Although we all seek out therapy for different reasons, many of us are looking for the same thing in a therapist: an unbiased, supportive, & empathetic guide. Someone to normalize the many emotions and challenges that come with being human in our often chaotic world.

Life is amazing, but it also can be messy and painful. I work with individuals, adolescents or adults, who are in stressful situations, feel anxious, or are making a life change. For some this may be a rough patch that they need help navigating. For others, something larger may be disrupting their lives. My specialty is helping people who have had a traumatic event or are dealing with anxiety . I also assist youth and adults in treating eating disorders.

While I am comfortable working with a wide range of presenting problems and issues, I specialize in treating depression, anxiety , identity/relational/cultural concerns, trauma, and personality disorders.
Do you feel disconnected from yourself and others? Do you find it difficult to identify, understand, or manage your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors? In my work, I strive to create an accepting, non-judgmental environment where you can feel safe exploring the difficult, and sometimes painful, parts of yourself. I view therapy as a deeply meaningful and collaborative process that can serve as a catalyst to shifting the way you relate to yourself and others. This allows for more fulfilling and meaningful relationships, and the subsequent easing of psychological symptoms.

Accepting new clients! I help people overcome difficulty and use it to grow and pursue a life of meaning and purpose. Sometimes we start by treating stress, anxiety , depression, trauma, career, or LGBTQ+ and other identity issues, and over time turn to deeper issues about the life you want to create, your identity, and your values. I’m a humanistic counselor, which means I’ll never tell you what to do and I’ll always empower you to make the choice that’s best for you. I use a collaborative, gentle approach that helps you connect with your intuitive sense of self and your intrinsic motivation to grow and do difficult things.

My practice specializes in working with adults interested in therapy beyond just talk therapy. We have openings for clients located in Georgia and Washington DC. Our clients oftentimes say they struggle with symptoms such as recurring negative patterns in their life, anxiety , depression, anger, overwhelm, relationship issues, problematic family dynamics, trouble getting new habits to stick, compulsively using external things to feel better (i.e. work, people, alcohol), pain, headaches, and more. Through a mixture of talk therapy and body centered approaches, we will explore sources of trauma and healing with curiosity.

If you want to feel less anxiety , reduce OCD symptoms, or improve your relationship, I can help. One of my specializations is helping people to feel calmer and less reactive. Some of my clients feel a general free floating anxiety . Others struggle with OCD or a phobia . We will use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy Exposure and Response Prevention, or mindfulness to reduce these fears and help you to feel more in control. For couples I work with the Gottman Method to improve communication.

I work with individuals and couples who struggle with depression, anxiety , eating disorders, substance abuse, and personality disorders.
Choosing a therapist is a difficult decision. Instead of telling you how I work, I decided to ask some of my patients to describe it in their words. "Susan is so down to earth that I feel like I'm talking to a good friend." "She really cares about her patients." "She makes it easy to talk about things that are very difficult to say out loud." "She is non-judgemental, kind, intelligent and professional." "After working with Susan my life is now moving in a positive direction." "Most importantly she has helped me to parlay the skills we've worked on into my life."

Anxiety Therapists

What are the most common treatments for anxiety?

Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioral therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other popular forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioral Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.

How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?

The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.

When should I seek treatment for anxiety?

Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.

How effective is treatment for anxiety?

Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
