In my fieldwork thus far, I have supported adolescent clients in an intensive group therapy setting as well as have worked with adults with a history of severe mental illness and homelessness.
As a gender fluid, queer white woman, I aim to support clients who share intersecting identities and incorporate my values of anti-oppression into my therapeutic practice. I intend to offer care that is both trauma-informed and in line with harm-reduction models and best practices. As a clinician in training, I strive to learn from my clients' own wisdom and work in tandem with them to explore whatever it is that is showing up that day. Having been in therapy myself, I offer a personal awareness of how the relationship and structure can inform our choices in session.

I began my experience working on a child/adolescent psychiatric unit and with children in a residential placement program.
Hi, I’m Katrina! I am a Licensed Professional Counselor and have been practicing for over 10 years. I help people who are overwhelmed, stressed, struggling with relationships, or dealing with a life transition or change (experiencing loss, changing jobs, starting college, etc.). I have extensive experience working with adolescents and young adults, but happily work with clients of all ages. My counseling style is empathic and encouraging. I believe that in most situations, everyone does the best that they can with what they have – moments that don’t go well tell us where help is needed or what skills we can build to help next time.

I work with a broad range of adolescent and adult clients.
I approach treatment as a collaboration between two partners, working together to deepen our understanding of your concerns, and construct alternative ways of thinking, being, relating and feeling. As a relational psychodynamic therapist, I consider our relationship an essential mechanism of change.

As a trained and experienced child, adolescent and adult psychoanalyst, I am able to offer the deepest form of therapy when this is determined to be the treatment of choice.
I believe in the Talking Cure. Life can be fraught with disappointments, losses, stressors and challenges that feel overwhelming and discouraging. Finding words to describe thoughts, feelings, past and present experiences, in presence of a compassionate and non-judgmental other, affords profound and lasting relief from the emotional discomfort that interferes with the ability to live the life one desires. Undigested emotional pain from the past can interfere with ones ability to live a full and satisfying life in the present. Identifying those emotions whose roots are in the past, frees us to live more fully in the here and now.

I help teens and young adults who are struggling socially, academically or professionally, often with issues like ADHD (possibly undiagnosed), chronic illness, food & body image issues, or grief. The clients I see typically feel stuck, off-track, or “aren’t living up to their potential" despite interest and effort, and see themselves as weird or not fitting in. As a teen or young adult, if you're sad, anxious & frustrated because of very real and complicated problems that affect confidence & self-esteem, I can help you find a path forward that allows you to be yourself, make the most of your strengths, and live your best life.

When working with children and adolescents, I encourage parents to learn to work and communicate with their child or teen.
I work with individuals, couples and families. It doesn't matter how many people are sitting in the office, I view each individual within the context of the systems they live in each day. We are all part of many systems, marital, family, school, community, work. The relationships and importance each of these systems place on individuals can sometimes can lead to breakdowns in communication and mental health issues, such as depression and anxiety. Treating the dysfunction in the relationship often restores the feeling of wholeness in an individual and of course leads to stronger deeper relationships between individuals.

I specialize in helping teen and young adult women make sense of their emotions and manage them effectively.
Your teens and 20s are challenging. Sometimes it all seems like too much to manage. The overwhelming thoughts, feelings, and stress. You're navigating relationships, responsibilities, and planning for the future but don't quite trust your own judgment. Your self-esteem wavers daily. The expectations you place on yourself are completely unfair but you hold yourself to a higher standard than others. Your loved ones want to help, but they don't say the right things and may make it even worse. You question if you're being dramatic or just overthinking. You wonder if you'll ever feel like yourself again. It can get better. I can help.

Teen Therapists

What does therapy for teenagers look like?

When a therapist works with a teenager, the pair will talk about what the teen is struggling with and explore solutions, which may involve interpersonal skills, coping strategies, medication, or lifestyle changes related to sleep, diet, and exercise. Different therapists employ different modalities, but most involve a combination of conversation and skill building.

How long does therapy for teenagers generally take to work?

There’s variability in teenagers’ experiences and challenges; some may begin to improve from therapy within a few weeks while others may take several months or longer. Teens can discuss their progress with their therapist periodically to assess how they’re improving and any changes to the treatment plan that could potentially accelerate that progress.

How do you encourage a teenager to go to therapy?

It’s helpful to express your concern and love while framing therapy as an opportunity to explore a tool that could help improve their life; just like they practice baseball or dance, now they can practice their emotional skills. Give your teen control over the process where you can—maybe by weighing in on choice of therapist and signaling that therapy involves confidentiality, so a parent need not know all that is discussed in sessions.

How do you prepare teens for therapy?

You can prepare your teenager for therapy by describing what the process will look like and setting expectations for timeline, if requested. You can explain that the first session may begin with an assessment phase, that they can describe their experiences but that the therapist will ask questions too, and that it may take time to feel comfortable opening up. Ask how they’re feeling about the process and answer any questions calmly and supportively.
