There is a lot to gain in a therapeutic relationship with a clinician that makes it safe for you to express emotions, process events, and bring aspects of who you are into clearer focus.
As a marriage and family therapist, I work with individuals, families, and people in relationships on a broad range of issues. I am here to listen, to understand, and to guide you towards the change you would like to see. I take time to learn about you, your history, and important life events in a process of co-discovery. During our work together, you will come to make links between the past and your current experience, while also discovering new tools and honing your own positive coping strategies.

My approach to therapy is one that prioritizes the creation of a relationship that is safe, mutual, and honest. I want my clients to feel empowered and free to explore themselves and grow into the person they wish to become. I am calm, warm, and active. I offer my clients feedback and challenge them in ways that encourage growth, often with some levity and humor. I value knowing my clients as a person and prioritize gaining an understanding and appreciation of their perspective. I work together with my clients to identify negative patterns in their life and provide the opportunity to create new, healthy experiences.

I work with adult individuals experiencing trauma, anxiety, relationship difficulties and many other concerns using IFS.
Feeling anxious, depressed or overwhelmed? Want to improve your relationships? Challenging times can also be opportunities because they activate the parts of us that need healing. This can also cause extreme feelings and thoughts to hijack us, making us feel overwhelmed or stuck. I truly believe we each have everything we need to live from a place of calm, courage, curiosity, and creativity. We just need to release the obstacles and burdens we carry and learn how to relate to ourselves differently.

Life is a journey and we aren't meant to travel alone. Sometimes it's helpful to have a person to travel the path with you, to shine light in the dark places. Engaging in counseling is one way in which to get support with your struggles. If you are struggling with depression, anxiety, relationship issues, school, issues of faith, addictions or any other disruption to your life, I would love to get to know you and to help shine light in the dark places.

A trusting therapy relationship is an essential part of healing.
Burnout from work or caregiving. Compassion fatigue from doing important work in the world: teaching, health care, activism. Being a parent & coping with the collective trauma we are all managing during the COVID pandemic. These are some of the themes that come up in my work with clients where I believe we truly cannot go it alone. There is true power in getting support and sharing your truth, and I bring an open heart & humility to our work together. I will work collaboratively with you to support you in living a fuller, more connected life - wherever you are in your journey of self-discovery & healing.

Some things are difficult to think about and even harder to talk about. Perhaps you are experiencing depression or anxiety, dissatisfaction in a relationship or career, or struggling with substance abuse/misuse or self-sabotaging behaviors. These are just some of the many reasons that one might find themselves seeking help from a therapist. When one makes the decision to seek help it is the courageous first step in the journey to self-awareness and a more fulfilling life. Very simply, my role as a therapist is to help you begin the transformative journey of uncovering limiting beliefs that are obstacles to emotional wellness.

I also help individuals and couples navigate challenging issues like relationship ambivalence, breakups, breaches of trust, poor communication, sexual trauma, lack of intimacy, exploration of gender identity or sexual orientation, and sexual problems like inability to orgasm, pain with sex, or erectile dysfunction.
I work for The Center For Growth, treating everything from mental health to sex and relationship issues. I can help you manage thing like anxiety and depression as we explore and understand complex emotions in a safe space and find healthy and effective ways to express and release those feelings. We can immerse ourselves in exploration of your past as we make connections and gain understanding of how old patterns show up for you today. Or we can focus on the here and now, identifying what behaviors and thoughts are no longer serving you so you can create new goals that support your growth, in whatever way feels right to you.

Do you feel stuck? Do you struggle with the ability to validate your thoughts and feelings? You’re not alone. Developing a positive self-identity in an ever changing world can be challenging. Sometimes over apologizing, rather than explaining, becomes our natural default. The greatest gift you can give yourself is the ability to self-sooth and to Do You, unapologetically. When you strengthen your relationship with yourself, you release the barriers that keep you “stuck.” I work from a place of empowerment, helping people to navigate their internal struggles while restoring hope in themselves to eventually reach their inner contentment. Together, we will explore one’s relationship with self and others while working to strengthen coping skills and individual growth.

My goal is to provide you with a safe and honest environment in which to do this work. Take the first step to more effective living by understanding how patterns of thoughts affect your emotions and actions -- and what to do about it.

I tend to view psychotherapy as relatively similar to physical therapy. You may come in with a few minor aches and pains or maybe you’ve come in with a major injury and are unable to function. My role is to not just ease your pain but work with you to gradually get back on your feet and on your way to becoming your best self. Therapy can be a big step and I hope to help you achieve insight through a collaborative therapeutic relationship . You are the expert in your own experience!

I believe the most important part of therapy is the therapeutic relationship . I aim to create a warm environment that allows the support, courage, and self-compassion necessary for you to grow. I see therapy as a space for us to build a meaningful connection that can foster a gentle self-reflection so you can better understand yourself. Through this process, we’ll uncover and address the reasons you may feel stuck, unhappy, preoccupied, or anxious. In our work together, we can venture to the parts of yourself you’ve felt too scared to go alone to in order to facilitate the growth of new experiences, understanding, and compassion.

When you’re looking for a therapist, one of the most important things is finding someone with whom you can develop a safe, healthy, and trusting relationship . I believe that it is in the context of this kind of relationship , that healing, growth, and learning occur. I’ve had a rich and varied career working as a psychologist and training doctoral students in a range of settings including an inpatient hospital, a clinic for families living with HIV, in community mental health clinics, and in private practice.

As a licensed professional counselor and board-certified music therapist, I collaborate with individuals and couples to cultivate increased self-awareness and self-acceptance while building tools to better cope with life’s challenges. I believe that each of us deserves to develop a rich, full understanding of ourselves. While the process of self-inquiry can be challenging, I hold the space to safely explore aspects of self that might feel uncomfortable, with the goal of building a positive, authentic relationship with yourself and others. I am also available for LPC supervision.

My ideal clients are looking for a therapist that respects their identity and won’t shame their relationship .
Hello! My name is Joanne. I’m a therapist specializing in inclusive, affirming care for queer, polyam, and kinky individuals and their loved ones. Therapy should always be a safe space for individuals to work on their deepest vulnerabilities, so let’s talk about stuff like gender identity, orientation, nudity, relationship styles, safe sex, or body image to name a few. The general public can be sex-negative at times, and so, too many people feel shame over identities, desires, and behaviors that are perfectly healthy. Sex is everywhere in our culture, yet meaningful conversations about sex isn’t. Let’s change that.

I work with individuals and couples who struggle with depression, anxiety, eating disorders, substance abuse, and personality disorders.
Choosing a therapist is a difficult decision. Instead of telling you how I work, I decided to ask some of my patients to describe it in their words. "Susan is so down to earth that I feel like I'm talking to a good friend." "She really cares about her patients." "She makes it easy to talk about things that are very difficult to say out loud." "She is non-judgemental, kind, intelligent and professional." "After working with Susan my life is now moving in a positive direction." "Most importantly she has helped me to parlay the skills we've worked on into my life."

I have particular interest in trauma, identity questioning and development, and relationship concerns.
I view psychotherapy as a collaborative experience between therapist and patient. I see my role as that of a space holder and guide. I will shed light on and explore what may be causing difficulty in your life, provide affirmation, and offer tools that will help sustain your therapeutic goals. I believe that transformation and change can evolve through collaboration and the development of a renewed narrative that is validating and hopeful.

Couples Counseling Therapists

Does couples counseling work?

Research shows that couples counseling is effective; it can reduce relationship distress and improve emotional awareness, communication, empathy, intimacy, and overall relationship satisfaction. For example, emotionally focused therapy was found to be effective for about 75 percent of couples, and those benefits lasted at least two years.

When should a couple seek counseling?

Couples can benefit from counseling if they consistently struggle in their relationship. They may have lost the ability to communicate effectively, become entrenched in harmful patterns, begun to fight more than usual, broken the other’s trust, suffered from a mental or physical illness, or faced any number of other challenges. Many therapists offer free consultations, so if a couple isn’t sure whether therapy is necessary, asking directly can provide clarity.

How can I get my partner to go to couples therapy?

The decision to seek couples therapy is often driven by one partner, who then convinces the other to participate. When discussing the idea, the initiator should be direct and assertive. They can state the problems they see and explain how the relationship would benefit from therapy. In more serious cases, they can also explain how their relationship may suffer without making any changes or seeking professional help.

How does a couple prepare for couples counseling?

The anticipation of beginning couples counseling can be difficult—sometimes more difficult than the first session itself. Taking a few moments to reflect can allay those concerns: What are the current challenges? When and how did they begin? What do they want the relationship to look like in the future? Reflecting on these questions can help individuals or couples articulate their goals. Of course, the therapist will also ask questions and guide couples through the process.
