My specialty areas include depression,
anxiety
, relationship and family issues, school/career stress, and adjusting to change.
As a therapist, my greatest passion is helping people find new ways to experience emotions and develop resiliency. I believe that we heal and grow most effectively in connection with others and that our emotions, even painful ones, provide us with important information about our needs. I understand that going to therapy can be intimidating and I try to create a warm, safe space through using an empathic, nonjudgmental, and, at times, humorous style. Clients have said that I am compassionate and supportive while also being honest and direct.

The decision to seek treatment and find the right therapist can be
anxiety
inducing. In fact, many times the journey stops here for those who might not be ready to take the next step. I know that being vulnerable with a stranger is uncomfortable and may be difficult when first beginning your therapeutic journey. However, my hope is that I can assist you in taking small steps towards building a trusting relationship together and reaching your therapeutic goals. Together, we can reflect upon what you’re needing from yourself, your relationships, and your environment and what changes can be made to enhance your overall quality of life.

I work with individuals and couples who struggle with depression,
anxiety
, eating disorders, substance abuse, and personality disorders.
Choosing a therapist is a difficult decision. Instead of telling you how I work, I decided to ask some of my patients to describe it in their words. "Susan is so down to earth that I feel like I'm talking to a good friend." "She really cares about her patients." "She makes it easy to talk about things that are very difficult to say out loud." "She is non-judgemental, kind, intelligent and professional." "After working with Susan my life is now moving in a positive direction." "Most importantly she has helped me to parlay the skills we've worked on into my life."

Trauma is considered a deeply distressing or disturbing experience that can taunt the average person daily. Trauma can affect us while we are sleeping or awake; while we are home or out in the public; during a conversation, or while watching television. Sometimes we don't even realize that some of our life's experiences were traumatic and is affecting our everyday functioning, our relationship with others, and our daily encounter with society. As a result, we begin to experience thoughts and emotions that could exhibit signs of depression and
anxiety
, and we struggle with how to manage them.

Anxiety Therapists
What are the most common treatments for anxiety?
Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioral therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other popular forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioral Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.
How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?
The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.
When should I seek treatment for anxiety?
Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.
How effective is treatment for anxiety?
Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
